Hiya everyone,
I know I've been away from the site for a while. I just need some comforting words right now. Mia ate a balloon last night. She popped it and then played with it for a bit. My flatmate and I took our eyes of her for less than 5 minutes, and found her chewing on the knot at the end of it. The rest had disappeared (and we looked everywhere!).
I phone the emergency vet who advised me to give her as much food as she wanted to help her pass it naturally; and check for vomiting, diarrhea, quietness and signs of distress. I checked on her every hour or so last night and she seemed fine. She used her litter this morning and had slightly soft stools, but nothing out of the ordinary. She ate and drank and her behaviour was completely normal. I stayed with her all day, and an hour ago, she used her litter again and had quite bad diarrhea. She's seeing the vet at 4pm today.
I'm really upset and really worried and it's my fault, I should have taken the balloon from her. What are the risks for her now? What if she needs surgery. God I feel so bad.
Any advice and so on appreciated (I don't have the internet at home, so won't be able to answer until tomorrow, but I promise I'll post what the vet said)
Best,
Déborah xx

Aw, I hope Mia gets on OK at the vets, I can't really offer any helpful advice I'm afraid, but will send you a big  as you're obviously worried about her
These cats of ours like to get us into a pickle don't they?

Ooooh, I hope everything will turn out well!! Yeah, these cats of ours... they just go nuts over all things they are not supposed to be playing with don' they, rubberbands, twisties, ponytail holders, piece of rubber to name a few...
Fingers are crossed, all my best wishes, and let us know how she gets on when you can!!

Hiya everyone, thanks for the replies!
Well, she had a slight temperature when she was at the vet too, and he put her on bland food and antibiotics for 5 days. No signs of the balloon yet, but the vet reassured me that obstruction caused vomiting and not diarrhea (which I didn't know as the emergency vet told me on the phone to look out for both). His take is that the balloon might have irritated her bowels which caused the diarrhea. I'm to take her back in 5 days if it continues.
Her behaviour is still completely normal (i.e. she's bonkers). She very much enjoyed her steamed white fish this morning! Problems might still arise, but she's fine for now...

Ah, well, no, I don't really think she's stupid, I actually tend to think she's the most intelligent and amazing cat in the whole world! :) It's just a shame she's a secret rubber fetishist (after she ate that balloon, we threw all the rest away, and she went into the bin to eat them too!)
