Title: Free 'Kitten Check' at vets
Post by: lisa77 on September 18, 2007, 16:54:19 PM
Hello ladies

I have booked Leo into the vet for what they call a 'Free Kitten check' . I didnt have time to ask exactly what this included ? He will of had all his jabs when I get him. The only thing left is to get him done (cant spell the N word !)

Anyone else had one of these ?

Also this vet wants £55 to get him done - I thought males were less expensive than females.. I thought that was quite high ?

our kitten or new cat checks for ours were just weighing, looking at teeth, in ears, listening to heart - I did pay less than that about £40 for boys I think but it was a couple of years ago now

There will be advice on flea and worm treatments too. Your getting him chipped so they cant sell you that.

The N word is neuter and they will no doubt say 6 months for that. £55 is more that what i pay for a female without discount but it does depend on your area. Your other option is phone other surgeries and price check them.

Our vets now give the first flea and worm treatment for kittens and puppies.

Round here £55 is over £13 more than the most expensive spay. I know one vet a few miles away in Buxton charges about £51 for a neuter and when I heard that I nearly fell of my chair. If the £55 is too much you can always have a Cats Protection voucher to help towards the cost. Far better to have a cat neutered at the right time than to wait until you have the funds.

I know I thought it was expensive ! I doubt I would get the voucher as I am not on Benefits..

Of course, I will pay it when he reaches the correct age of getting him done but I just thought it was a bit steep !

That does seem expensive, when Raffiki was "done" a couple of weeks ago it cost £32 and when Mellika is Spayed next month that will cost £46.

I think it's about £35 - £40 for a male neuter at my vets (can't recall exactly).  But then again, I didn't get a free kitten check so there's that to consider too.  I took Mosi to be checked over a few days after I brought him home and paid £20 consulting fee, so I guess overall I paid the same as your vet is charging!  I'd ring around a few other vets in your area just to find out what they charge.  Then you can see whether you just live in an expensive area or whether your vet is charging a lot more than the others.

You don't have to be since Feb '07. Obviously if a person can afford the full cost themselves it would be right to pay, but if the op cannot be done at the right time due to the fee needing to be saved up then it is acceptable for a voucher to be issued.

Thanks for the info Ela. I would feel bad taking the voucher. I don't really need the help as I work.. I would feel greedy ! Im going to call round all the vets now & compare prices. Thanks for your help honies  :)
