Title: Good anti-declawing article on BBC
Post by: Mark on September 17, 2007, 10:06:24 AM
I like the bottom line

"Cats have claws. If you don't want the claws, you probably shouldn't even consider having a cat."

I like the bottom line

It does sum it up rather, doesn't it?

I hope that article goes some way to educating anyone thinking that declawing is acceptable.

Even the thought of declawing repulses me - its really does beggar belief when people think that its an acceptable solution to a problem that a cat owner must accept may happen.

Some things I have read even suggest that it is good for the cat

I forget who said on here a while back but it was priceless. "If you don't want your furniture scratched, get a goldfish"

I'm amazed that it is so widespread in America. You can judge a nation etc.........

Not quite.  There are a lot of Americans that are opposed to declawing.  The US forum I sometimes go on is very anti declawing and most on there are very vocal in opposing it whenever a newbie mentions it.   It is offered pretty routinely by a lot of vets along with neuter/spay unfortunately, so a lot of people don't think about what it involves.   It's easy to criticise, but I don't think it's fair to judge a nation by that - if it was offered routinely over here I'm sure there'd be plenty of idiots who would have it done.  It's primarily because most people over here don't have a clue such a procedure is possible that it's never been commonplace.

Here's a petition I found when I was looking through the old CatChat forum a little while ago. As well as signing it, if you haven't already, it's worth having a glance at some of the comments, many made by Americans.
