Title: URGENT Elderly FIV Conker.. Can we give me a chance of a home?
Post by: Canterbury_cats (Sharon) on September 16, 2007, 19:19:35 PM
(From Another Thread) Just incase anyone misses it.

Conker came into our care after he was reported as being very ill over a weekend, he was reported to us as staggering around in the road. He was being fed by a lady for the last few years, but she didnt want to do it anymore !!! He was taken in and tested and proved to be FIV, by which point the vet rang me to decide if we should PTS. I agreed to give him a chance, although age against him, he was otherwise healthy... He has been with one of our experienced fosterers for 2 wks, we found he was drinking lots so had suspected kidney problems.  it was decided to get him in a basket and get him to the vets to have further blood tests.. Kidneys today proved to be fine, but his gums were terrible.. We have treated with long acting, and strong  dose of antibotics for 2wks so see if we can get on top of the inflammation...if he doesnt take him meds in his food, we want be able to give them to  him, he will be too stressed out and we cannot sedate him everytime he needs meds..

He can be touched and can be picked up but he hisses at you big time, he has not bitten at all though.. He was reckoned to be 10yrs plus.. although his poor state of neglet may of put a few years on him! But he could be worldly wise and even older..

I am trying to give this puss one last chance..as he is unhomeable in a domestic environment.. He will not be a good candidate for an indoor home, due tu his straying days he dosnt much like being cooped up.. I thought today he was going to be PTS, but we are going to give it a try to sort this puss problems out..

He dosnt seem to mind other cats although thats only going by he dosnt lunge when he sees another cat.. He hides and generally wants to get our of your way.. Anyone who remembers Isaac another FIV puss from Catchat days will know i successfully got him into Foal and he is doing well. Conker is an older version of Isaac...

If you send me the details, and tell me exactly what sort of home you're looking for, I'll send a plea out for you.  Re the medication, I've had a few in that cannot be medicated unless you want to be ripped to shreds  :sneaky:   On these occasions, I've taken them to the vets every 2/3 days for a jab and in Keiko's case, she went daily for a week which was so much easier than stressing her out trying to get a tablet down her.

Poor little babe, I hope something is sorted out for him

Cheers, Dawn.

He's not feral, just anti human. You can pick him up, but he hisses and would rather be left alone. He's really miserable in the fosterers pen, gets as far away from people as he can and just skulks all the time. (That's why an indoor home is not an option) He needs an outdoor type colony where he can be as independent from people as possible. Anywhere in the South East as I'll drive him there...

I'm going to try Foal Farm tomorrow as they have been known to take cats like this occasionally. But I have to say the future is not bright for Conker. We have to think about his quality of life.  :'( :'(

Fingers crossed  :wish:  It may also be worth contacting Mandy on CatChat and see if they can put him on their Homepage  ;)  Let me know if I can help anyway, I have contacts with contacts so someone may be able to help  :)  I'll send Gail a quick pm as well, she sponsors a couple of cats at another rescue, they deal with ferals but can't think of the name of the place   Leave it with me

Thanks for helping Dawn. I have asked his fosterer to get a photo of him asap. He is kind of black but has brown bits in his coat... As i am at work today and time is of the essence i have asked Pinkbear to help and she kindly said yes... So between us we are doing our best, although as Pinkbear pointed out "quality of life" does need to be considered.. Taking him to the vets everyday i dont think will be possible. Our poor fosterer had abit of a job catching him yesterday and i am sure it will get worse if horrid things are done to be everytime he ends up at the vets...No our options are limited on this one.

Suprisingly, having such a horrid mouth, he eats with gusto... I reckon he has got used to the pain in his mouth anyhows... For all we know he may of had FIV for years or farily recently and his harsh life for the last few years has increased the suspestiability of this common mouth problem with FIV.. Of course if the meds don't work and the inflammation dosnt clear up, then are options are limited..

Thanks for helping though.

I may add that we have ANOTHER FIV cat in now as well, a white puss, that is soppy as they come but he has cancer on the ears, and will end up losing them in the near future.. We are NOT doing well with FIV cats this year...and unsettling all from the same area of Canterbury. This is something we need to get on top of in time, but at the moment we are chasing fire.....

Cramar Cat Rescue is near to me in Hopwood, (South Birmingham);  I went to  their Open Day last month.  The feral enclosure is wonderful, they have lots of space to run and hide, and cosy sheds with a basket each to return to at night.  I'm not sure they would accept FIV cats though.

However, are you absolutely certain Conker is 'unhomeable in a domestic environment'?  He just sounds scared at the moment - given a little time he may come round.  It could also just be the pen causing his anti-social behaviour:  I've just taken on a foster who was hissing and growling constantly in a pen, threatening to attack, but has come round in just over 24 hours into a purring cuddle monster instead.  Just a thought.

So far investigations are not proving good.  :(

I spoke to Celia Hammond herself this morning. She can't think of a single place where Conker could live. Her advice was to let him go free... but what if he needs help again in six months?  :'( And personally, even though I know the odds of him passing on the virus now he's neutered is small, I wouldn't want to run the risk. If he infected even 1 more cat, that's one too many...  :'( :'(

Jasmine

I've seen this cat for myself, and the fosterer has been working with him for three weeks. He's spent the last 10 years roaming free and he hates being cooped by anywhere and he hates being too near people. He'd be the same in a house - probably worse. He definately falls into the semi feral category. :tired:

I'm feeling defeated by this one...  :sad no:

A small glimmer of hope...

A rescue, based in London, which specialises in finding homes for chronically hard to home cats, has replied to me. They said they can try to find Conker a place where he can have a garden. That's probably all he wants - just to sleep under a bush and be away from people.

Start praying, folks...  :)

How can you just let a cat go? Where do you let it go?  Who is going to feed it?

Maybe I caught her at a bad moment, but I was surprised she said that. I believe he'll need on going monitoring for his gums, and while that's possible in a controlled colony or secure outside home, to turf him out to fend for himself is a bit of a daft suggestion...  :scared:

He sounds like Sasa although she will sleep and play in the hoiuse, I cant get near her and she has to be able to be free outside.

His story is heartbreaking and do hope somewhere can be found for him for the rest of his life, poor Conker

There's one or two suggestions to try in the morning.

But if there is a nice millionaire out there, what this country really needs is secure, sheltered halfway retirement house for feral and anti human cats with health issues where they can come and go, but still have a human on hand to spot potential problems.

Not much to ask, is it....  :(

A human on hand to spot the probs and be able to catch them !!

My goodness just think of an cat-proofed country estate with cat slaves on hand 24/7 for all these disadvantaged kittys and unlimited funds  :gimme: :gimme: :gimme: :gimme: :gimme:

Fingers crossed for him, there is a rescue near me that take FIV+ cats, but I am at the other end of the country, and they have them in large outdoor pens (with shelter), so not sure it would be good for him anyway.

Hello all
The other rescue that may of been able to take Conker isnt going to work.. It was suggested we just take him back to where he came from..!! We cannot do that.. not only due to no one taking care of him, but no one to feed him...! At the moment he is still on meds and his mouth does not smell so we hope the antibotics have worked.. However, we have no idea at the moment if it will reappear once again, in which case thats not good news...

So we are still looking for places for Conker.... where he can be contained but allowed access to the outside and where someone can at least feed and keep an eye on his should his condition deteroiriate.

PLEASE, please spread the word for Conker as sooner or alter a decision will have to be made about his quality of life.. He cannot remain in a pen indefiinately...........

Any sources of help would be much appreciated...

Not sure if a mod can change the title of this thread to include URGENT.. I am not sure i can do it!

I'll take Conker

When can I collect him? Seriously, he can live his live out in our garden, we have cat flaps everywhere, he can go as he pleases and we will look after his welfare

We have 2 other males, both desexed, and a female(if she comes home) and 2 stray cats that come in when they want to- if you feel this is okay, let me know

MY goodness I was on the border of Streatham  and Norbury, one road across and I would have been in Norbury.

Although I lived there for a long time I never did learn the road names, blind as a bat

Ahhhhhhhhhhh sirens , yes and my road was first turning off the road opposite Green Lane at the Streatham High  road end.

Do you live near to Norbury Park?

Just across the road from Norbury Park and a short walk to Norwood Grove/The Rookery which is a haven, very peaceful spiritual place

If you think we could be suitable for Conker, can someone please let us know before (7.30am)

Many thanks

Yes, Conker is still looking and more desperate each day. PM me your number and I'll make sure someone calls you. Yours in the first offer Conker has had. Bless you for caring!  :blow kiss:

At it happens I'm regularly up to South Norwood and know Streatham well as I was born there. Norbury park is lovely.

Fingers crossed!

Some will hate me, but is it right to release a FIV cat into an area where there may be a number of cats?  Although Poppy Girls cats may be neutered/spayed, there may be others in the area that have not been and if they start fighting with Conker there could be problems, I know Cats Protection advise that FIV cats should only be homed where there are no other cats or homes where there are already FIV cats. and indeed indoor only or a home where the garden is cat safe.

I would also say and possibly be  hated more,  do you have full knowledge of FIV cats and their needs. Are you willing to pay for any vets bills,  usually it is far more dentals and ops for polyps in the ears that are necessary and if he has his freedom will you be able to notice these things before they cause him pain. Do you have somewhere where you can keep Conker for a few weeks before he would be allowed out? Lastly I assume a home visit would be done.  I say these thing as I know it is easy to say yes and appreciate your heart may be in the right place. Equally it is important to get the homing right and Conkers interest is paramount.

bumping up re Sharon's request "Not sure if a mod can change the title of this thread to include URGENT"

I don't think he will be able to go somewhere there are strays coming in & out as this will put other cats at risk (Admittedly a small risk)

As Sharon said, it will need to be somewhere contained.

Whilst in an ideal world mixing can and does happen I had a wonderful 8 months with her hissyness Miss Holly a feral who had FIV and finally succombed to it, did we worry no we gave her a safe haven - she was inside for her 8 months at our choice and lived with all the other Clan Cats till she passed away - at the time the other 36!

I have friends whoi have mixed homes and there normal ones have more health issues, I would and will be doing it again once I am back in the UK full time and the ideal candidate can be found  - for our peace of mind any FIV would be with our house cats through the day and allowed full run of the rest of the house with the other 22 at night!

Hope Conker has found his forever garden

Well, Poppy girl hasn't got back to me yet.  :shy:

And yes, we'd need to reassure ourselves there wasn't a danger of Conker passing on the virus.  ;)

He also needs to be assessed at the end of the week to see if his meds have got on top off his gum problems. He can't go anywhere until we're sure he's over this problem.  :innocent:

I have to say, there isn't any danger of Conker being PTS unless his health says otherwise. Although this is urgent, it is mainly as Conker isn't happy in a pen. Its not the sort of situation where he will be PTS on a certain date if a home isn't found (This isn't the  :bum: PCA )

Hopefully Sharon will find another idyllic rural home for him - she has had a good run on those recently  :evillaugh:

Hi Everyone

I have read all your posts with interest, I do know what it's like to have a FIV cat, we had one that passed away 2 years ago. I really appreciate your comments, especially Ela, thanks for your ultimate concern, Conker.

Sadly we do have 2 stray cats that frequent the cat food bowls, one is tamer than the other and I would not like to endanger them.

So sorry to have put your hopes up  :'(

Sorry for not getting back to you Pinkbear, I had to leave earlier for work than expected and had no time to check emails until now

Poppy Girl

Hello all
Just to let you know that Conkers gums have cleared up nicely and he seems better. HOWEVER, we dont know if this is going to return. I hope not.. BUT our welfare officer thinks that we are probably not doing Conker any favours, he hisses at you still and puts his ears back still. I dont think his attitude has changed much since we have him in, other then his mouth has cleared up nicely and he want be in any pain..

BUT WE DESPERATELY need to find him somewhere to go. Otherwise i fear the worst and Conkers days will be numbered in his pen..

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD and let me know if anyone has any great ideas or inspiration to help give Conker a chance of a better life..

Thanks..

I think we are all too nervous to say anything this end....  :shify:

:shoosh: But we are in negotions with a lady, experienced FIV owner, secure cat proof garden, used to anti social cats. The things being discussed are potential medical needs, where Conker will get his medical FIV care, who pays for what, etc... Don't worry, if it comes off, they'll be a party the like of which you've never seen!  :evillaugh:

Hello all
CONKER has (all things crossed) found a  home!!!

This puss is really very lucky, after being on the verge of being PTS not just once but twice, he surely has a cat angel over him.......!!! I didnt think there was anyone out their that would take him on but i have faith in human nature and appeal....

Now.....a big, and i mean BIG THANKS to MANDY at CATCHAT who has helped me on this one......

We had to work out how to support Conker for future vet bills and a few bits and bods but they were all sorted today...

Its a great, warm feeling inside when you literally make a difference and i hope the has a few years in him yet.... after being let down so much by us people...

While i am here i wanted to mention that you should all feel good as well about all you lovely Purrs people, because Jesiri continues to improve daily and is now the most affectionate, loving, daft and silly cat this side of Kent. I wish you could of met  him as he is a mascot for rescue. Never give up on those ones that need rescue the most....thats what i say...........

Sharon

I hope a moderator reads this.. As Conkers home is assured now.. I would be very grateful if a MOD could perhaps take him off you splash page and perhaps put up the cat on Catchat that is a very similar case to Conker, his name is Everweddy and he also has FIV.. Like Conker he has limited time and it would be good to think we could "save" them both... The thread is on Catchat under FIV..

Thanks everybody!

Congratulations Conker  ;D  You'll need to PM Tan to get the newsflash changed, I know she's got a lot on at the moment so i'm sure she'll do it as soon as she can.
