Me and OH had a talk last night - I didnt really know whether to post it or not, but if not I suppose how would anyone know we want to help
I was feeling rather upset about the lack of sightings of Car Park Charlie (for those reading the thread in general cat you know who he is) it will be six weeks today. I felt really annoyed with myself last night, wished i'd helped sooner etc etc. I have also had Ela's words ringing in my ears as I have seen the younger version of Charlie a few times, and I want to help him before he disappears too. OH was saying that last year when I worked here I didnt know that much about feral cats at the time (had only just got on Cat Chat) and at the time I genuinely thought he belonged to someone but just strolled around out work grounds - it was only when I came back to work here that I realised how ill he looked :(
Anyway - I have decided that I will try to catch mini-charlie (unfortunately already had him in the trap so it might be harder 2nd time round) so he doesnt have the same fate.
OH said to me last night that we havent got room for another permanent cat, and as we are renting we cant really foster long-term either - but we do have a good sized spare room and he said that we could put ourselves out there as emergency fosters (ie: for cats who need somewhere to go until a permanent foster or home is found for a few weeks - to help when people say things like "I will PTS unless you come take the cat today" and rescues have nowhere for them to go etc) We also are offering to drive cats to new homes etc if needed - either short/long distance.
I know it isnt much, but I thought if I dont post it up then nobody will know! I dont always have time to read all threads etc, so if anything like this comes up (especially around Manchester) you know that we are here to try and help ;D
-
Thats brilliant Dawn - I wish that move had taken you closer to your parents!
-
I'm in the same boat Dawn, I could do a few weeks at a time but not longer term and driving, but as my Star is mad as a hatter I don't think any more cats of our own is an issue, unfortunately I'm in Buckinghamshire and most of our people on Purrs seem to be in North but I am definately willing to help if I can
-
There seem to be quite a few problems in the Manchester area (not picking on Manchester, just my impression from reading various posts) so I think your offer of help will be very welcome sooner or later, Dawn. I will keep a look out too and let you know if anything comes up.
:thanks:
-
Well done, Dawn! :wow:
A rescue could put a kitten pen in your spare room. Offer a puddy B&B. :evillaugh:
DiddyDawn says not to worry about cats becoming trap shy. She's caught the same ginger tom 3 times now. :tired:
-
trouble is my local rescue want you to have a pen in the garden which I don't think is fair on my lot and my local one man band said I had an undesirable address for rehoming when I went to her for a cat!! cheek
-

:shy:
I'm sure Mark would have something to say about that, but then again I think a cat B&B is probably alot less hassle than a people one
I will set the trap again on Monday, with some Felix Roasted - The felix roasted roadshow is in my local morrisons on Sunday :evillaugh: He looks a bit like a Felix cat actually :)
-
  Oh, dear! :shy: Ask Ela about Felix Roasted. :evillaugh:
You can't go wrong with some stinky old sardines in tomato... ;)
-
Oh god what happened?
I still have a tin of stinky old sardines in tomato - and just when my car had stopped smelling like them
-
I know it isnt much,
If everyone did a little bit, all those little bits would ensure the lives of many more cats could be helped. All credit to you. If you can just make a difference to one cat occasionally it is a bonus.
I have also had Ela's words ringing in my ears as
What have I done to make bells ringing your ears, hope they are not too painful? ;D
-
Oh, Dawn... :evillaugh: :evillaugh:
I just find it really funny. Felix are spending so much promoting this Roasted stuff, but the cats don't like it. Ela (or I may be confused and it was Desley?)says she keeps getting calls from people offering her unwanted Roasted packets, but her foster cats won't touch it either. And if Ela is getting offered all that food, just how much of it is being passed around, and around...
Talk about own goal! Felix didn't research that one too well... :evillaugh:
-
Ela (or I may be confused and it was Desley?
Guilty.
just how much of it is being passed around, and around...
We give it to some farm cats who are thankful for what they receive.
-

You said to me something along the lines of "I hope you will make the little one your next project" I can't find my old thread with it on there.
He ran away from me when I went up to look at him on the rockery in work yday and hid behind a 4x4 looking all "did she see me?" and I thought... i'll get you :evillaugh:
PB - my three hoovered up the roasted! and Cheese is normally a picky little un. I was thinking it was a re-launch but I was getting Roasted mixed up with As Good As It Looks (which to me doesn't look very appealing.. )
-
I hope you will make the little one your next project
Yes, I remember now.
-
Good on you Dawn - couple of things to consider though, space isn't the only thing you need to be able to foster, you also need to have the time to give them, and be prepared for the extra work it will create, as well as being able to let them go at the end of it.
-
Thanks for advice Des, I think we would give it our best go - both me (as you know) and OH absolutely adore cats so I am sure we would be spending alot of our time in the spare room if we had a "guest" :)
I also know in my heart of hearts that we cannot afford another permanent resident at the moment, and also just wouldnt have the capacity for another full time, if that makes sense? I think our little clan needs time to just get used to their being the three of them permanently here for now, at least for a few years. (They would be kept seperate from whoever was staying as a guest)
I think me and OH just want to make as much of a difference as is feasible for us right now - I wish I could do what alot of people do on here and be more involved as a permanent foster/helper etc - hopefully in the future
-
as well as being able to let them go at the end of it.
That is the hardest part especially if a cat has needed nursing, isn’t it? However, we have to remember that there is always another little one equally deserving that would not get help if we don't let go and create a space.
-
Dawn, I don't suppose you'd consider fostering Lucas the FIV stray would you :scared: He is a sweetheart and would really benefit from the extra attention :Luv: Let me know if you'd be interested just until a permanant home can be found for him
So sorry Charlie hasn't appeared again, I'm hoping that someone did manage to take him in and get him the treatment he needed. You never know, he may turn up again and my offer of help is still there
-
Just PMed you DD if you read this first :)
(in case anyone else is following we have agreed to take Lucas as our first foster :Luv: ) Better get tidying the spare room :evillaugh:
I'm all excited now!
-
That's so exciting!!! Well done you for offering out your spare room, and especially to a special FIV puss. I'm jealous, seeing as my foster room is currently taken up by my 'foster person' meaning there';s no room at the inn for needy creatures. Give Lucas a big cuddle from us
x
-
How exciting :wow: What a cat to begin with - I just know he'll do well, he has been given the best start possible with a fanatstic name :wow: Do you know when he'll be coming to you?
-
Helen, I thought you might have something to say about his name :evillaugh: I don't know when yet - hopefully sometime this week though. Its funny cause I bought a new cat bowl and some toys and I just said to OH a couple of hours ago that they might be getting used very soon - maybe sooner than we thought ;D
My mum was :innocent: when I told her I wanted to foster cats - she is just applying to be a foster mum to children so I said its just the same really, just different interests
Hopefully I can post some pictures of Lucas in his new room soon! :wow: Its really nice to think that we can help out a special FIV pud :)
-
:cheer: :cheer:
You know, hand on heart, my best pal is called Dawn as well! :evillaugh: There's something about Dawns' that makes them the type to roll up their sleaves and get stuck in. :sneaky:
Cheesecat Dawn, that's a fine and noble thing you are doing and Lucas will repay you tenfold with meows of thanks. :Luv: :Luv: :innocent:
-
Awww Dawn, that is fantastic news :Flowers: :cuddle: I have to admit to getting a tear in my eye reading this thread, I'm soooooo chuffed for him bless him :yesss: He is gorgeous and I'm sure you'll think so too :Luv: I'll give you a bell tomorrow about him :ok:
-
Oh this is fab news ;D
I dont wanna be a downer but can I just ask who will pay for any medical treatment that they may need and also neutering , and vaccinations?
-
I've already had him neutered and he's microchipped and had his first jabs, he's due for his 2nd lot in a couple of weeks and I'll have to fund them. He's also had a blood profile done and he's absolutely fine, hopefully he'll remain so, if he needs any treatment, I'll have to sort something out with the vet that Dawn uses but I'm hoping he should be okay. It's a shame Dawn isn't closer really as I get a good deal with my vets but it can't be helped.
-
Wonderful news, good luck for this little one.
-
Yay, fantastic news ;D Well done Dawn, hope all goes well with Lucas when he comes to you :Luv:
-
great news Dawn, my spare room will be empty from the beginning of October everyone!!
-
:Flowers:
Oh all the Dawnies are happy now :wow: :Luv: ;)
-
Thats great D Dawn, so many dawns LOL.
I was really asking for future fosters cos I knew you would sort it out for this one ;D
-
As we are pretty broke, I can't unfortunately offer to pay for chipping/neutering etc - I am just offering lots of care and love, food and a place to stay for kitties while they wait for somewhere else to live.
It was just me trying to offer what I can, as that is all we really can do at the moment. I am just glad that we can help DD with a space as I know that alot of people are full to bursting at the moment, maybe I didnt really think it through enough about vets bills etc? I was just sort of hoping that whichever rescue I would be helping might be able to cover that part.
Hope that doesnt sound awful of me, we would obviously pay for that if we could.
I am just glad we can help Lucas, so excited that he is coming this week ;D
-
No I dont think it awful of you at all, and think that you will provide a much needed space
I just thought I should mention something so that you know that whoever you offer the space to knows, like you, exactly where you both stand on this.
I am sure that this is a life saver for Lucas and thats wonderful ;D
-
Lucas is coming tonight at 8pm! :look:
I am quite excited now :attention:
Phil just sent a text to say he will hoover the cats room, I thought to myself I dont think Lucas will notice :evillaugh:
-
how exciting! Hope he settles in well
-
:yesss: Hope he settles in well ;D
-
Fingers crossed for him.
-
Great and of course you have to get the camera ready ;D
-
:yayyy: :yayyy: :yayyy: not long to go now till 8pm.....Good Luck Dawn ;)
-
Our new arrival is here :Luv:
Lucas is such a purring cuddlebum, he is gorgeous - not shy at all, such a laidback "go on then, pet me!" type cat ;D
I think he is going to be very very spoilt ;D Phil has already gone out to get him a tin of Felix from the tesco express in case he would rather have that
Of course, camera was at the ready ;) here is a piccy of him.. there will be more where that came from!

He is lovely and that face tells a million stories, I am so pleased you are looking after him ;D
-
Aw... :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:
-
Dawn, thanks so much for offering him your spare room for a few weeks, I'm over the moon for him :Luv: :Luv: He is an absolute sweetheart and I did shed a few tears, but more happy ones than sad ones. I just can't believe he has been left to fend for himself, he reallly didn't deserve to have the life he's been living, that is what I find so sad :'( At least now, even if it's just for a short time, he can get the life he deserves and I can't wait to see him once he puts some weight on ;)
 to both you and Phil, I'm sure Lucas will come on in leaps and bounds and will give you lots of love in return for your kindness, xxxxxxxx
-
Aww, he is lovely, and I do hope he doesn't have to wait too long to find a good home
-
Just caught up with this - so much for "its not much" - you are obviously a "doer" and kept your word ;D - As Ela said re if more people did it etc ;D
I want to to that in the future when the B&B is closed down (not to far away :evillaugh: ) and yes I would rather do kitty B&B any day :evillaugh:
My biggest worry is geting too attached and the parting :( anyway, I'm sure he will be spoiled rotten in your care Dawn ;D
-
It was just me trying to offer what I can, as that is all we really can do at the moment.
What do you mean all you can do at the moment? Your all you can do at the moment is far more than most people ever do. There are so many 'gunners ' that never take aim and fire.
-
Aw, he's a very handsome little man, so glad he's with you Dawn, he derserves to be spoilt :Luv:
-
don't belittle your efforts Dawn, it's making a big difference to Lucas
-

Exactly what I meant - better than all the "I wish could help's" in the world :Luv:
-
better than all the "I wish could help's" in the world
There are plenty of those about, aren't they. In a few years time they will think, would have, could have, should have.
-
Dawn
A bit of number crunching to convince you how important the shelter you're giving Lucas is. :sneaky:
I got hold of our figures so far this year. While some fosterers get 'bogged down' with sickly and nervous cats that need weeks and weeks of care, others have had a rapid turn around and I saw that one had cared for 25 cats and kittens this year alone. That's 25 puds who had nowhere else to go. :(
At the same time, one person had a special pud for 4 months... but if that one person wasn't there, we couldn't have helped the 25 the other fosterer had. :-:
Dunno if any of that makes sense, but the point I'm making is that by looking after Lucas, you are also freeing up capacity for all the other needy puds in the area. :wow:
-
Aw what a beautiful boy Lucas is....im soo glad he is sorted :Luv: :Luv:
What have Doc and Cheese had to say....anything yet as im sure they know there's another cat in da house ;D
-
Thanks for all the support
He is beautiful and I am so glad we are able to help him. PB - its nice to think of it like that, I think our spare room will have a constant stream of kitties (I hope so anyway!) once Lucas has found a home we will be open to a new guest of course.
I'd like to think that we don't start things we wont go through with, I didnt think that it would be so soon after posting this thread but the sooner the better - once we decided to do it we wanted to get right in.
I am going to have to remember the day we got our first foster - we want to make a little photo album with a picture of each one and a description :)
I meant to say, I dont think he realised the crystal litter was his loo, and he went on a cushion last night, bless him. We moved the tray so it is move obvious but if he has a problem we will change to a more normal litter, I think our lot were confused by it at first too - its only cause they recognised the tray itself that they knew what to do. :Luv:
