Title: Please send positive thoughts for my Charlie
Post by: sheryl on September 09, 2007, 12:03:01 PM
My big tabby boy Charlie had a horrific accident yesterday, the sight of which is going to haunt me for a very long time.  He cam home without his collar on Friday so yesterday morning OH went over the field to see if he could see it, he shouted for me to come because Charlie had lept from the roof of a high storage unit into a tree and was stuck he wanted me to watch him while he ran home for a ladder to get him down.
I tried to talk to Charlie to keep him calm and it was all going okay until he stood on a branch that snapped and he fell and impaled himself on the spikey 8ft fence underneath, he just looked at me as if to say "please help me this hurts" I screamed for OH and somehow managed to lift Charlie off the spike, he struggeld and ran away, I knew he was badly injured and was in hysterics, nearly all the neighbours who were home came out to help us look for him because I was scared that he would just go away and hide to die.
2 hours later he crawled home and we rushed him to the vets where had emergency surgery, the vets phoned last night and said that they have transferred him to their surgery 30 miles away because there is 24hr nurses and vets.  He got through the operation and is hanging in but he could really do with some positive thoughts and for those who pray some prayers please.
I have got to phone the vets at 2pm to see how he is.

There is however some positive news for Meeka, the little Snow Bengal

Sorry to waffle on,
Im in bits here.

Thank you all so much, the vet has just phoned me and said that he is continuing to improve medically but seems very depressed, he has suggested we pick him up tonight and care for him at home. He will have to be on cage rest and I really want him to come home but Im scared that I wont be able to care for him properly. Im not at all squeemish when it comes to humans but am a total wuss with my babies. I dont wsnt to sound dramatic but everytime I close my eyes I just see him stuck on that spike and I just cant sleep.

What / where were the injuries ?

Its hard to describe Lynn - the spike went in under close to his front armpit which made a big hole and the skin ripped downwards and accross between his back legs, the vet said that they lost count of how many stitches.

Poor Charlie, it must have been absolutly horrible for both of you. Archie and I are sending lots of love and head rubs. A close friends cat had a similar accident last year and was impaled on a gate with spikes . Lucy has made a wonderful recovery with no after effects. Its natural to keep thinking about what happened, be gentle with yourself, you have had quite a shock.

I have only just seen this, what an awful experience for you. I hope your first night at home with him wasn't too bad, I had a similar experience with Pebbles, I had no idea how I was going to cope with the sight of her after her amputation. I hope he makes a full recovery, and he will probably do better at home.

Not quite sure what I did - typed a reply here yesterday but must not have posted it :-[

I am a new member and have just seen this. How is Charlie?

I thought if I shared a nasty experience I had with my cat Dino it may give you some comfort about the things they can come through. When he was just a few months old, Dino ran out in front of a car which braked to avoid him but hit him and as the wheels were locked when they hit him they ran up his legs and ripped the skin and tissue completely off one leg and partially of another right down to the bone. My hubby and I heard the squeal of the tyres and immediately called the cats when Dino didnt come we ran out and the driver of the car picked him up in his jacket and started walking towards us. When we saw him we went into shock. His legs just looked shredded. We though he would die from the shock alone. He went through emergency surgery that evening but the vet was not holding out hope. He went back to our normal vet after that weekend and before he got home to us he went through another surgery to amputate some of his toes. He came home after about a week with 3 legs in plaster. He pulled through it all and after months of treatment with a new drug all the skin and fur even grew back on his legs. He is 4 now and is a wonderful cat. He gets a little lame in the leg that was totally degloved but he lives a full and normal life. Like you I kept hearing the accident and seeing his little legs afterwards and I really was scared whether we would be able to care for him well enough at home. We did and it was like second nature, he was also a lot happier at home with us and perked up as soon as he got in the door.

I am sure with your love and care Charlie will pull through this and that he will recover so much quicker for being at home with the family he loves. Good luck and get well soon Charlie.

Thank you all so very much, sorry I didnt post yesterday - Charlie seems to be on the mend but my poor boy looks like a patchwork quilt - I just want to cry everytime I look at his poor little body but then I tell myself how lucky we are that he is still with us, I picked him up on Mon Evening and he just cried and cried on Mon night, OH has slept on the floor next to his cage since he came home.  I think because of all the stitches he is finding it hard to find a comfortable position to lie.
We had a fright this morning because it looked like the wound was weeping really badly so we went to the vets and she explained that the weeping is coming fronm the hole where the drain was removed.  She was concerned about a patch of skin that she thought might die but said today that it is looking healthy.  Poor Charlie is constipated so he has got to have a laxative tonight.
Our vet Nina is so lovely and when we got the bill she has only charged for all the medication and not a penny for all her time.

Fourfurballs - thank you for sharing Dinos strory, so glad that he made a full recovery.

Thanks all, pleased to report that Charlie is continuing to improve, he is almost back to his cheeky self.  He is at the vets tomorrow night and will hopefully have his stitches removed, the vet has said that depending how the wound looks they may remove alternate stitches to start with.  Im hoping they can remove them all because he is getting really fed up wearing the attractive "head cone". I have been taking it off for short periods and he hates when I put it back on.

Well the trip to the vets last night wasnt what we had hoped for - poor Charlie is having an alergic reaction to the internal stitches and on top of that where there is a big hole inside him it is filling up with "bodily fluids" and the vet had to drain it.  The vet removed some of the stitches but said that Charlie is not healing as well as they would have liked and some of the fluid inside is seeping out between the stitches.  I have got to take him back on Sat morning to be drained again and they will have another look at the remaining stitches again.
Poor little man is looking really peed off today.

Thanks all for asking, my laptop is still playing up so couldnt post at the weekend, I feel as though the last 2 weeks have been a roller coaster.  I took Charlie back to the vets on Sat (OH had to work and I was dreading going on my own) we saw the lovely vet Nina who did the surgery and she was really pleased with him, she had read the notes from Wednedays visit and said she had been really worried.  The remaining stitches have been removed and she is convinced that any more fluid will be absorbed naturally now but if not we can take him back to be drained, otherwise she doesnt need to see him for 2 weeks.  He still has to have his "lampshade" on at night for a few days incase he pulls at the scar where the skin is thin. Hurray my boy is on the mend  - he has a wander round the house last night but started to go looney - running around and playing so we had to put him back in his "safe room"

I am so relieved and want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all the support you have given us through this awful time xxx

Thanks all, Im on holiday at the moment and my laptop is playing up - again.  Charlie is doing really well and his wound is almost completely healed, he has turned into a total cuddle bum and every time I look at him I realise how lucky we are that he is still with us.

OMG Sheryl
I have only just found this thread - Poor Charlie. Reading your first post I could feel the pain. The poor little man.

I am so happy that he is recovering, and healing well bless him. I think he knows that his mummy loves him, and basically saved his life.

Big hugs to you both xxxx
