My sister let me know today she has been trying out collars on Pippa (Guinness and Widgets little sister), all of them safety collars. They fit right, exactly the way they should, but Madam seems to have found ways to get rid of them.
The other day she got her mouth caught so my sister checked the tension, any tighter it would have been unsafe, just safe enough to get a finger or two in.
Safety collars... takes her 20 minutes to get out of it.
Are there any solutions? She will be indoor/outdoor and my sister refuses to not have a collar as she needs ID. :shify: Pippa is naughty. And I say that as only an Aunty can. NAUGHTY! She has found her way into a neighbours house already after a brief supervised stint outside, how I have no idea, my sister says she looked at a bee in the lavender for a second only and madam was gone!
Now the collars. What do we do!
Sorry, don't mean to sound like an eejit here but really... how can a cat be sooooo bloomin NAUGHTY and we can't get a collar on her.

I had exactly the same trouble with Felix. Tried him with safety collars and every time he managed to get his mouth caught, but as you say it was exactly the right fittings, could just get a couple of fingers underneath. Can't be of much help, I'm afraid, Felix is an indoor cat so I just gave up with him in the end.

We had this scenario when Tiger a former feral joined us after 3 weeks, umpteen collars and several id tags we gave up and had him chipped, not ideal but it was causing the cat issues and me an expensive time I was on first names in the ID Tag shop by week 2!
After that everyone who joined us is id chipped and we have wanted posters on the all just in case.

Max is an indoor/outdoor cat so I wanted him to have a collar so that neighbours would know he belonged to us. Everytime he went out he came back without it, he never had a collar longer than 2 days, I kept going to different places and ordering over the internet incase people thought I had a fettish for them :rofl:
Anyway after 2 weeks and about 9 collars later I gave up, although they were the safety snap release kind, never to tight, never to slack, they just didnt stay on for long so I gave up cause neighbours know him now and he tends not to go far, just through the long grass at the back of house, he is chipped though.

yes, I have gone through more collars than I care to count. My reynard could have them off in five minutes. He would get his leg through them, get his lower jaw caught on them and go through all manner of gymnastics to show me just how cruel I was being. Gave up in the end as I was the only person in the neighbourhood with brown cats so the neighbours knew where he belonged (to that crazy cat woman over the road from the trucking company, lol)

I haven't tried the boys with a collar yet, thought I would let them get over the snip-n-chip first ;)
Rascal was a wee :censored: with her collar at first >:( I kept finding it all over the house for days :tired:
Eventually she relented and kept it on, after a half hour play session to keep her mind off it :sneaky:
Sorry I don't really know what to suggest apart from keep trying :hug:

My sister was saying that Pippa hides things, one of the collars is missing, somewhere in the house. THere is this secret hidey hole somewhere where all her toys disappear to and then come back whenever she wants to play with them. :-:
She's naughty. When she got inot the neighbours, there were builders there replacing the windows. There goes my sister calling her and one of the builders says: "here she is love" and there she was. Pippa was hiding in the kitchen, clearly terrified. So back to the house. 2 minutes later attacking the door, she wants out.
:tired: I get exhausted just talking about it.

Guinness loves water and can hear running water from miles away :tired: that's why the spray gun I use when the others are naughty doesn't work with him :evillaugh:

The spray bottle means nothing to Pippa, she loves water too :-:
And the training sessions of letting her out hungry and responding to food being shaken in a tin does not work either.. she would rather go hungry.
She has the most amazing ability of ignoring ANYTHING you say. Except when she's sleeping.

I tried getting the boys used to a safety collar at a young age but even though it was the right tightness they managed to get their jaws caught in it as I think they were too little to be wearing one ie the length of their chin/jaw area was too short so it easily got stuck.
Every week or so I have put it on them for literally a few minutes, enough time for them to adjust to it being there but not enough time for them to make a serious attempt at getting it off. It seems to have worked as although they don't wear one yet they are not desparately trying to get it off every time it goes on.

Yes, that's what my sister has done, tried them out to get her used to them. No bell though, Pippa started flying across the room trying to get the bell off.
I do think though, she is a very slim cat, long body and her head is maybe still small so maybe easy for a collar to get round it easily. I have told my sister to perservere with this, madam naughty will get used to it...eventually. I hope.. :-:
I can tell you though, I am so glad all Lexy does is wake me up at ungodly hours of the morning with her racing sessions around the house.
Pippa is exhausting. But we love her. :Luv:

Cosmo was just like this to start with >:( but we persevered over the winter as I was determined that he would wear a collar when he was allowed out after his op. I didn't want people spooked by a ginger tom that didn't look "owned". He's also chipped.
I know people have different views but especially living in London, I didn't want anyone thinking he's a stray.
re the Houdini act - perhaps she'll settle down after she's been spayed, if not already done? I know both of mine calmed down a lot after their ops ;D

Pippa is gorgeous and looks so full of fun - it took some time for my youngest three to get used to their collars and they seemed almost frightened of them and hid behind the sofa but we persevered and now they wear them all the time without any problem.

Well I am saying not too much as you all know my and the feelings of Cats Protections about cats and collars even the so called safety collars. If people dealt with what I and other rescues have over the years due to the use of collars even the so called safety collars then a collar would not be a consideration. I appreciate some people will say my cats have had collars on for years and I haven't have a problem, but that does not mean that cats up and down the country do not suffer daily through the use of a collar amputations, over the years I have dealt with numerous terrible injuries due to collar injuries some cats taking many months to heal and gangrene and death being the worst case scenario.
I appreciate people who sell collars will come out and rubbish what we in rescue deal with and always say that a safety collar is safe if put on correctly, therefore turning the problem onto the owners and making them feel guilty when something happens, but they will say that to protect their livelihood.
Oops sorry I said I would not say much. but this is a topic that I admit I do have a bee in my bonnet about because of what I have dealt with over the years, knowing full well that the injuries or death could have so easily been prevented.

My youngest 3 didnt get to go out until they were 1 year old and they still did the same with their safety collars and they were virtually full grown at that point.
I wanted them to wear them while they learnt the area for peace of mind but i didnt get that as every 5 minutes one would dash in with their jaw stuck. So i gave up.
They are chipped and only go out when theres someone in to keep an eye on them.

Today is the start of a new era for the boys... collar day! I've been putting one on them (breakaway type of course) for a few mins each week so that they didn't totally freak out when they were old enough to wear it and now that day has come.
They are not in the slightest bit bothered by the collar but they seem to take great delight in getting it off within seconds of it being put on :innocent: Lukey will now be known as 'Lu-dini'. I put it on him, watch him for a few minutes which consists of him behaving perfectly normally, no attempts to get the collar off it's like he hasnt even noticed it's on him. I then turn away for a split second and then turn back to find Lu-dini's collar on the floor next to him :sneaky: Riley is a bit better but has still got it off at least 5 times so far today :innocent:

I think your sister will just have to perservere but ultimately if she wont keep them on there is nothing she can do, she might become a little more used to them or bother less as she gets older though so it is worth carrying on trying.
Just make sure she is chipped and thats all you can do.
The only other thing i know of is tatoo'ing but i dont know how many vets have a tattoo thingy :-:

:evillaugh: my sister is giving up, much as she doesn't want to. Pippa is just too cute, my sister is worried someone will mistake her for a stray and keep her. >:( She's chipped, so I hope if it ever does happen it will be a matter of getting her scanned and reuniting her.
