Title: Blood test
Post by: Michelle (furbabystar) on August 07, 2007, 13:17:43 PM
I am going to book an appointment for Lilly at the vets and asked for her to be tested for diabetes.

Does this need to be a fasting blood test ?

to the best of my knowledge no it doesnt, they will be wanting to test her normal blood glucose and normally the body should be able to control and maintain blood sugar levels at all times.

I think another type of sugar test (fructosamine) is one where they need to be fasted but that is normally only done if theres problems after a normal blood glucose and in diabetic management.

Check with your vet though, i'd imagine they'd probably say dont feed brekkie etc but cant see why starving is nec..defo dont withhold water.

Booked in for tomorrow at 5pm.

You were right it doesnt need to be fasting for diabetes.
however, as she is also going to be tested for Thyroid (the one that makes them fat rather than thin) she mustnt eat for 8hrs before hand
