We finally helped Sooty over the bridge today. He had been vomiting recently so he had some blood tests yesterday, then he collapsed early this morning. He was put on a drip and sustained until the blood test results came back; these showed that his kidneys and liver were both failing. At his age we didn't feel it was fair to continue his treatment for the sake of possibly another few months of low quality life. We held him as he passed over the bridge very peacefully.

I have known Sooty since he was a kitten, although he 'officially' became mine when he was about 8 years old. When he was around 6 or 7, his owners (neighbours of my parents, where I lived at the time) bought a dog and Sooty moved out the day the dog moved in...they would feed him on the doorstep but he spent most of his time at our house. My parents were adamant that we couldn't feed him or anything, so he stayed 'their' cat for longer - until he had a large abscess on his leg which they didn't treat. We took him to the vet and ended up with tablets to give him. So we had to start feeding him, and he never went 'home' again. After a couple more months they came over with some cat bits and said "we haven't seen him for 6 weeks, you might as well have him".
I know that Sooty has had a long and happy life, and I am glad that he made 'the decision' as easy as it can be for us. I am glad that although he was clearly slowing and getting old, he deteriorated so quickly within a day, with such bad blood test results, that we knew that it was time for him to leave us. He just lay down on the table and waited patiently, he was ready to go. Bye bye sweetie, rest in peace old fella, we miss you loads xxx

Bye bye, dear Sooty. Go play on the bridge - and send your mummy a rainbow. :Luv:

So sorry to read this - what a gorgeous boy and a wonderful age. Sooty has obviously had the best possible caring home - you will miss him so much but he will always know how much he is loved and missed. Thinking of you.

Rest in peace Sooty go and make new friends :nite:
We knew little that morning, that the Angels were calling your name,
In life we loved you dearly, In death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone,
for part of us went with you, the day the bridge called you home.
You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide,
and though we cannot see you, you're always at our side,
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same
But as we are called one by one, the chain will link again
:RIP: :candle: :RIP:
