Title: Riley off to the vets tomorrow... poorly paw
Post by: Tiggy's Mum on July 20, 2007, 23:13:15 PM
Was looking at Riley's back paw tonight and on one of them he has lost the fur on the very inside and it seems to be weeping a browny substance, not blood but not sure what it is.

Last Saturday he was in the bathroom and was sat on the towel rack playing swingbat with the light cord, I heard a really loud yowl and a thud I rushed to the bathroom and found him in the spare room meowing really loudly.  He was really frightened and hissed, not at me or Lukey but just hissed so I knew he had hurt himself.  He went in the gap behind the bed so I coaxed him out, he was limping on that back paw for no more than 5 minutes and then he jumped on the bed, jumped on the windowsill and was racing around like aloon chasing Lukey.

Later that day I checked his paw, squeezed each toe, stretched each one out, squeezed his foot in general, no reaction at all - by that I mean he didn't flinch or pull away but he could definitely feel it.  He has been absolutely fine in himself - eating, drinking, playing, walking completely normally.  I can only guess that it is linked to him getting his toe caught in the towel rack or something similar but am also thinking it could be a skin condition  :scared:  I'm feeling really bad for not noticing sooner  :(

Here's a pic, doesn't completely show it but by comparison the other paw is snowy white inside.

Does Riley have access to long grass? Or could grass seed have been bought into the house?

Occasionally, a grass seed can pierce the skin and become embedded in the flesh. Because it's so small, there isn't much of a wound so it can go unnoticed and heal over pretty quickly. But underneath, infection begins. The area gets swollen and sometimes there's a discharge. Every now and again, if the grass seeds get touched, it'll hurt and the cat yelps. But because it's such a small area, the pain passes quickly.

Things to look out for would be any sign of redness or the area feeling hot.

It migh just be worthwhile asking your vet it grass seed is a possibility.  ;)

No access to grass, there are no plants in my house since I got them.  He's fine about me touching it - if you ddin't spread his toes out you wouldn't know anything is wrong, there's no swelling or anything.

my first thought was foreign body of some type but if he is only in discomfort when you spread his toes i wonder if theres a wee cut, you know like a paper cut that can hack abit, nothing serious but bloomin uncomfy.

let us know how you get on, the vet might be able to see better but its very hard on your own with all that hair there,.

Of course I will, now there's just the dilemna of whether I should take Lukey along too - only joking  ;)  He's big enough to stay at home now.

Sounds to me like he might have electrocuted himself and the charge has exitted through his foot. That would leave a small burn mark which might express itself in that way .........

Yikes  Are you being serious?  How would he have electrocuted himself in the house though?

Edit: :waiting: 12 minutes til the vets opens!

He was so cute last night, I got his carrier out and left it in the hallway, he hopped in and had a little snooze and then this morning I found one of their little mice in there  :)

You provided the clue yourself!!

OK, call me thick but I still don't get it!  The light cord is just a piece of string with a toggle on the end and the towel rack isn't a heated one it's just metal  :-:  Maybe he's been poking his paw into sockets  :evillaugh:

In any case will find out later, have an appointment at 10 am for him.

He had an anti-biotic injection and a course of antibiotic tablets.  The vet didn't really shed any light on what it could be just that it was 'very odd'  :-:  She said the infection was quite extensive and was really surprised at how it wasn't affecting him in the slightest.  He has to go back next week and if it's no better then she said about doing skin scrapings.  On a positive note I asked if he was big enough to be neutered, she had a good old  squeeze of his bits and said Yes (but not until the infection has gone though).

Riley is his completely normal self still, running round like a crazy fool.  He has been so loving this afternoon, he has completely forgiven me for his outing today  :)

How strange.  It sounds as if it had started before the bathroom yelp, dont you think?

Quite possibly, maybe he did hurt his paw on the towel rack and the reason he made such a fuss about it (the yowl and the hiss) is because it was sore already from whatever this is, like if we have a cut and knock or poke it.  It's really strange though as there is no swelling whatsoever and he is behaving completely normally, no limping, no extra grooming of the foot in question.  Just keeping my fingers crossed that the antibiotics work for him  :-:

Her's a pic of my brave little soldier taken a few mins ago  :)  I made an exciting cardboard box for them ages ago and when they got bored of it I put it on top of of the wardrobe in the spare room, it's one of those canvas ones so I had visions of him falling through the roof  :evillaugh:

It looks a bit better already, it's still discoloured but it's not as wet inside as it was.  He is being so brave and is managing to wolf down his tablets in a big blob of dairylea, Lucas is having a 'control' blob of dairylea ie no tablet  :evillaugh:

All the medicinal cuddles have been dispensed, I think you will all be pleased to know that the paw is still fully functional and he is able to use it to bunny kick Lukey's head when they are playing  :evillaugh:

Awwww bless him! Glad he's being a good boy with his tablets. Give him a huuuge cuddle from me and a big maternal lick and cuddle from Boopy who wants to adopt him (best not to pass on the well meaning 'just because you are a boy' thump that Bilbo wants to send him lol).

I think Lucas must give him a piggy back  :evillaugh:  It's strange though, Riley can get up onto or in anything and Lucas hasn't even worked out how to get on the kitchen worksurfaces.

Just caught this thread Helen.

Paddy says "tsk - the youth of today...!"  But he likes the look of Riley's box he says, even though he's beyond such things himself now, and he hopes Riley's paw is much better soon.   ;)

His paw seems much better thanks Gill, still a bit discoloured but hardly any moisture now.  He's got the antibiotics dairylea blobs until Friday and has to go back to the vets on Friday to have it checked again.

Medicinal head rub dispensed, thank you  :)  I don't think they would share their Dairylea blobs with anyone, it's their favourite thing at the moment - they must think all their Christmases have come at once as they are getting dairylea blobs twice a day :drool;

Riley says    He wants to know is Franta a real cat  :shify:

The stuff they are having at the moment is actually Dairylea light (cos I'm on a diet) so it's even less tasty than normal dairylea and they go crazy for it.

He looks like a cat, talks like a cat and pounces on bedmice but in terms of food, one of the most uncatlike cats I know, except for Ducha, Misa and Sasa

My brave little soldier was back at the vets tonight to have his paw checked, the vet was really pleased with it but said she could still see one little scabby area so has given him another 6 days course of antibiotics dairylea blobs, Lucas will of course have to have his 'control' dairylea blobs too  :evillaugh:

Have booked them in to be neutered and microchipped too - a snip at £137   Can't complain too much though, the vet only charged me £33 for Riley's 1st appointment when it should have been £41 (she charged me for a 2nd consult - £20 when it was his 1st for that condition so should have been £28) and today she only charged me for the tablets not the consulatation - £8 instead of £28 (it's meant to be £20 for the second consult).  She did the same when Tiggy was poorly and needed to be seen 3 times in two days, think I'll be going to the Hosptal every time now instead of my small branch and asking for her by name  :evillaugh:

It was getting better..... UNTIL....

I had a bit of a 'poo crisis' this morning, Riley jumped on the bed and I saw something on the bottom of his poorly foot - it was brown and as I went to look at I was racking my brains as to what it might be  :shify:  As I got closer and saw the cat litter encrusted in it I realised it was poo

He had it all over the flat bit of his back foot and somehow had managed to embed most of it deep into the crevices of his paw where the infection is  :innocent: I tried to wipe it out with a baby wipe but he kept wriggling away so I had to wrap him in a towel while I cleaned out the poo from the deep crevices of his paw pads   I left his head exposed while I was doing it and Lukey came up to him and started licking his head!  Just what I needed at the crack of dawn  :tired:

No, it wasn't nice   I couldn't even go back to bed after it happened as he had jumped on the bed with his pooey paw so had to put a wash on and make the bed again with both of them playing grab and chase the duvet cover/pillow case/sheet  :innocent:

His paw is much better than it was a week ago but there is still one little area that needs to heal.

btw any chance Ging and Grwndi could have some of that daiirylea blobs?  They are in need of some treats so they say :shify:
