hi, im new to the forum and i have a problem which i hope you can help me with
a while back my female house cat escaped and came home the day after....then one day noticed she was getting fat and realised she was pregnant....she finally had her kittens a week ago, she had 6....2 black, 3 black and white, 1 tabby....all looked healthy and were feeding off her well....just been in to check on them this morning and now we only have 4 kittens :( i looked all around the room and cant find the other 2 anywhere!!!! where could they be? i hadnt touched them or moved them
a black (runt of the litter) and the tabby is missing
really upset as the tabby was the only one i was planning on keeping!!
she wouldnt eat them once they all had fur and eyes open would she?

Welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately as I am not physic I have no idea where the little ones are, although it is possible the mum has eaten them, though I have not had this happen to kittens that are a week old. Perhaps she hidden them under a rug or something. I think you need to systematically search the room inch by inch.
Is it possible that mum could have escaped from the room and is moving the kittens one by one?
I hope you find them soon. Your post however, is a timely reminder that even house cats need neutering/spaying. Apart from the fact that if one escapes it can get pregnant and disease. Each time a female has comes into season it increases the chance of mammary cancer later in life and also females are at risk from pyometra a life threading infection if not spayed.

Definitely check everywhere, high, low, everywhere! Like Ela says, is there any way she could have moved them? If so check the whole house. I'm sure she hasn't eaten them though.

Can your cat get out of the room at all? Look under beds, in cupboards, wardrobes, under couches/chairs. Mother cats sometimes move their kittens around so she may have done this.

thanks for your replies....im hoping she has just moved them somewhere else.....if she had eaten them, surely there would be some bones somewhere?? ok, im going to search the house just incase my son had opened the cat room door or something.
will let you know the outcome.....they cant have just dissapeared.

Sitting really quiet to see if you can hear them may help, they may be calling for mum.
Has she been a good mum up to now? Is she making any effort to get out the room?

she has been a good mum as far as i know....she tries to escape from the room everytime i go in, but i let her out today to see if she went to them but she just sits and watches the fish lol

I hope you find the missing kittens. I'd search the house high and low, especially if there's a chance she's taken them from the room she was in.

OMG!!! Good Luck for finding the missing kittens.....just remember if she is moving them one by one she is not happy in the position/room she is in now......possibly move her to a smaller room, one that is not busy and she cant get out of unsupervised ;)
ps.....please get mum neautered asap.....think when the kittens are poss 8 wks or so (very important)

thanks, i already have plans to neautered once she has finished nursing her kittens lol, i dread to think how many kittens i would end up with lol.

How old is your son? I ask because my daughter, then about 8, thought it was cool to put the hamster in her satchel and take it to school. Is there a chance you son took the babies round his mates? :-:

Shouldn't they be fed every 2 hours at the moment? - maybe follow mum closely for a while. I don't think they will last long without a feed :(

Yes they do mark :( mum only sits and watches the fish so isnt doing a very good job of leading to where she left them. Sometimes they abandon them when they feel something is wrong.
Carina have you checked behind and under the fish?

You need to search the whole room as she has prob hidden them somewhere
My cat Issey used to do this - I would come back from the school run and find a kitten missing, often i would find it behind the wash basket
As someone else has said, sit in the room and listen for a cry

I hope you've by now managed to locate the missing babes but it is possible if something was wrong that mum could have eaten them :'( This does happen and I've had it happen a couple of times, it's not very nice but sadly this is nature. Hopefully she's just moved them somewhere, xxxx

sorry guys only just managed to get back online....my son is 2 so no chance of him taking them....ive checked everywhere for them, but sadly havent found them....i cant hear any cries either......i think if she has hidden them, at such a young age then its going to be bad news :( :( :( :( so upsetting

So sorry Carina but try not to upset yourself too much :hug: Try and search every nook and cranny before ruling anything out, it's amazing where they do hide them. If she has disposed of them herself, this is natures way of saying something was wrong, xxx

Sorry you havent found them.
There is usually 2 reason why a mother will eat her young
1 is when something is wrong with them and 2 is when the mother feels threatened.
I would still pull the room apart once your little boy is in bed as it is strange for her to have eaten them at a week old.

If this is her first litter, it's possible that six kittens are just too many to cope with, and the lost two have died from weakness. Their bodies may be somewhere in your house.
It may be a good idea to help her raise the kittens with supplementary feeding, but not too much, otherwise she will lose the desire to suckle them. What kind of mother is she being? Is she coping?
So sorry this has happened.
I can only echo what Ela has said about spaying. It's so easy for a female to escape and become pregnant. Because a cat in heat doesn't ovulate until she mates, the unshed ripe ova often lead to ovarian cysts or cancer. Pedigree breeders who don't want to breed from a queen during a particular heat will use small implements (like cotton buds) to simulate sexual activity and enable the release of eggs. I think ferret breeders do the same.
I hope you find the little ones and that the rest of the mothering goes well. Keep your little boy away from the mother and kittens, as even the best behaved children could scare a queen into bad mothering.

still no sign :( i searched the house again and couldnt find them.....tinkerbell (lol sorry son named her) is looking after her 4 kittens and has shown no attempt to find the other 2! i'll keep looking for them but maybe there was something wrong with them....thinking about it last night, when she had them they were all together and when they were about 2 days old she seperated 2 kittens from the rest....i just assumed she seperated them to feed them seperatly...
....on a lighter note...i cant believe how big 2 week old kittens are!! lol....the black and white one is huge!!
