My cat has just been diagnosed so this is obviously all new to me. George had his dosage doubled on monday night and today he has an upset tummy. Nothing too bad at the moment but obviously I am a bit worried. Could this be the insulin that has caused this? Phoned the vets and they said that he could just be feeling a bit off colour but to bring him in if it gets any worse. Apart from that he seems ok.

Hi Lynn,
You might find the attached links useful.

Hi Lyn,
Sorry about the mispelling of your name. :doh:If I could type I would be dangerous. :)It is not such an uncommon complaint these days.
I wish you both well.
-
i am sure george will be ok, when he gets his diabeties sorted, drinking alot a weeing alot is a common sign of untreated diabetices also lack of energy, when he is in more of control of the diabetices he will be a much happier cat, i only know as i am diabetic too
-
how is george to :best:
-
Cats Protection has compiled a register of people who have or have had experience with diabetic cats and who are willing to offer support and advice (non veterinary) to those with diabetic felines for a copy of the register, please send an A5 SAE(stamps to the value of SOp) to; Helpline, Diabetic Cat Register, Cats Protection, National Cat Centre, Chelwood Gate, Haywards Heath. I hope George continues to improve Lyn :)
-
info on its way to you Lyn, hope George has had a better day
-
Hi Lyn,
I'm on the diabetic cat register.
If you send me a personal message (someone here will be able to tell you how) I'll give you my contact details if you want advice from an old hand.
I know it feels devastating at first, and it does take a while with some cats to stabilise them, but things can improve fast.
It is well worth looking for info on the internet and well worth questioning your vet about the type of insulin George is having, frequency of dose, etc. There are different types of insulin around.
Also food is a really important part of things for a diabetic cat.
Cat diabetics aren't like humans or dogs because the feline metabolism is different. Current thinking goes that cats should be on a very low carb diet. So it's worth talking to your vet about that as it can really help in stabilising George.
Keep posting and do contact me if you'd like to...
Claire

hows the lovely george today lyn.hope he is better ;D
-
Bless him! When do the blood results come back?
-
Not long now!! Bet you cant wait to give George a huuuuge cuddle!
-
What a worry for you, i do hope the increased insulin helps his levels :-[
Sounds like he has everyone twisted around his paws at the vets!
-
Hiya Lyn
Ive been offline for over a week and not yet had a chance to catch up with the hovel..sorry george was abit poorly, its always more worrying when they are like that and have diabetes. glad to hear he got over it though.
hope they get his levels sorted out. Is he having twice daily injections and maybe after this bottle of insulin if its still not working they may need to try another type ??
but hopefully it will just be the case of adjusting the dose.
will try to catch up wth the hovel over the next few days.
-
Awwww, bless. My little guy seems to wee an awful lot too. It's quite frustrating because he literally sits in the room with the litter trays, watches me clean them and then goes for a massive wee in the most recently cleaned!(Still, better in there than anywhere else in the house!) :scared:

Lyn what kind of insulin do they have him on?
There are some good kinds available now though the newer (better) ones tend to be more expensive. As Lynne says, it may be worth considering changing the type of insulin. (Some cats respond better to some types than others). Vets are sometimes unwilling to try experimenting but if he's not stable then one has to look at what might get him there.
With a blood glucose so high it's no wonder he's still drinking and weeing lots. He's probably not feeling great either (though clearly better than he was).
You could also try (with vet's permission, but I'd argue quite hard for this and consider doing it anyway) increasing his dose every week or two weeks by a very small amount and seeing how he does. (I mean by half a unit or even less if you have a syringe you can read that accurately). You're the frontline nurse in this instance and you're the one who'll know best and most immediately how he's doing. If you try this gradual increase for a month then he's blood-tested again you'll find out whether you might have reached the right level.
When I first had a diabetic cat I had just moved house and had signed on with a vet I discovered wasn't particularly good (I soon changed). I did this gradual increase without asking them, as their approach was so cautious we'd never have got him stabilised. It worked and I'm glad I did it. The dose we ended up on was 3 units (100%) higher than the one recommended by the initial vet.
Is he on one dose a day or two? And do you notice differences throughout the day?
Also I'd highly recommend feeding him high protein and very low carbohydrate food. This is going to take some research (as most commercial cat food has more carbohydrate in than even an ordinary cat needs let alone a diabetic), or help from your vet (there are now some high protein special diabetic foods on the through-vet market as science has realised that diabetic cats are not- as was previously thought- like dogs or humans, and therefore need a different diet). Certainly he shouldn't eat anything like Whiskas, Felix, Brekkies, etc. which have sugar in (a real no-no). You might even try one meal a day of plain-boiled shredded chicken breast- but buy organic and/or one with no added sugar... yes, even some shop-bought packaged plain chicken breast can have sugar added! Time this meal according to the type of insulin he's on and when that's least effective in relation to his meal times... If you adjust his diet at a very early stage then you may find you don't need to increase the insulin so far to get him stable. Which would be a good thing for several reasons...
-
poor George hope he's a better tomorrow & paws crossed for tuesday
-
Good luck George!!
-
Glad to hear George is home and responding well :)

-
Aww, I am so glad things are starting to look up!!
-
Whats his insulin alarm?
-
So pleased he is doing so well on the new insulin, what a real sweetheart George is
-
It's a little alarm that the vet gave me. You set it to go off when George is due his insulin and it beeps. You press a button and it turns off. It is magnetic so you can just stick it to the fridge :) You don't need to keep resetting it. It just goes off automatically.
George recognises this now and runs to the kitchen when he hears it beeping ;D
Love that george and glad he is feeling better on the new insulin. :Luv:
-
Couldnt have hoped for better news Lyn - fantastic!!!!
And how wonderful he is, to have learnt his alarm call :Luv:
-
What agreat idea that alarm is and so pleased he recognizes it cos it must make your life so much easier. ;D
-
brilliant news news Lyn & that is a very good sign that he is holding his tail up, many  to both of you
-
excellent, fingers crossed this is just the start of him being stable and back to normal
-
great news lyn, i was sure things would look up when he'd found the type of insulin that suited his body.
diabetes as you now know is all about fine tuning and lots of patience.
just glad george is such a good boy for you, makes managing this condition half the battle.
-

-
Best of luck for tomorrow :)

Poor George :-[
-
How is George today, Lyn?

Lyn, Sorry to hear about George I am sure that he will be fine in time ...xx
-
Aww, i did hope they had got everythign stabilised. Good luck for this week.
-
good luck for this week
-

Try not to fret (oh, so easy for me to say, I know). One of my closest (human) friends had to do exactly the same thing to stabilise his diabetes. That was about 15 years ago...
He's been fine ever since...
-
Im so sorry its not better news Lyn :-[ Try and keep positive, hopefully this will sort George out.
-
Give him a gentle scratch from me for being everso brave.
-
Once they sort out his dose he will be as right as rain -
Big kisses to George X
P.s
He hasnt got a brother called Dennis has he ??
-
glad he was happy enough to play & lets hope next week will finally put him on the right road to recovery
-
Do hope that he gets sorted quick
-
The poor boy. It sounds like they are doing a 24hour glucose curve which should tell them a lot more information about what is going on and help to stabilise him. I`ve got my fingers crossed for him.
-
Everything crossed for him Lyn.
-
How is he now Lyn?
-
Fingers firmly crossed for George today and tomorrow. It's interesting that he's down in the mornings and perks up in the evenings - I'd bet that's very relevant... Let us know as soon as you find anything out.
-
hope tonights stay will get to the bottom of whats needed, many  & will be thinking of you both tonight & tomorrow
-
Good Luck, George. :)
-
Best of luck George ;D
I bet his highs and lows are linked to when he gets his insulin.
-
Fingers crossed for good results today Lyn.
-
Good luck George!
-
Poor George, he's really having a difficult time of it.
Do you think the sneezing might be stress related, rather than an allergy?
-
perhaps George is telling you the vet has a cold
-
Lyn, I took in a foster once that sneezed while we were in the vet, so they immediately thought she must have cat flu - but didnt' sneeze once after we left there, so I wonder if there is something in the waiting room that is causing it?
-
:luck: for tomorrow - let us know how he gets on
-
:hug:good luck tomorrow
-
All the best tomorrow
-
Fingers crossed for him.
-
Hope it goes well!!
-
So far so good :)
Yes. I'm crossing my fingers for a good week for George. Give him an ear scratch from me.
-
Everything crossed his levels continue to drop :Luv:
-
Sorry to hear that things are still not great for George big hugs to you both xx
-
Fingers crossed you can get it low at some point - it might be stress of being at the vets if he is only wheezy there.
-
Hoping for another big drop :)
Me too. Let us know...
-
I am sorry that the insulin didnt work for george and really hope that your vet and his friend can come up with a way to solve the problem.
-
Sorry to hear this - hope they can come up with a good plan for George. Has the vet said not to give George any food until Monday or have I misunderstood?
-
sorry to hear this news, brilliant though that the vet is taking so much trouble to help George
-
Apparently there is a vet in Milton Keynes who is an expert on feline diabetes.
-
Im so sorry to hear this Lyn. George is such a star that he must be due some good news
-
Thats good to know :Luv: :Luv: Such a good boy :Luv:
-
Fingers crossed Lyn.
-
Am rooting for George....
-
Checking for news on George...
-
Glad to hear George is doing OK at the moment, what a mammoth thread  Maybe your vet could try speaking to Iain at Vet UK, they are very helpful and might be able to order some of this special insulin in for George so that you can get it quicker. Their preferred contact is by email but I have always had a response within 24 hours...
From the website:
"If you have a question about prescription only items that cannot be answered after looking on the POM home page, or you would like a price for a POM you use but cannot find on the site, please email us selecting "prescriptions" from the dropdown menu box below: or click here prescriptions@vetuk.co.uk "
Almost forgot, Tiggy sends a healing head kiss George's way :Luv:
-
Glad to hear that George is feeling better.
-
Tried to reply yesterday Lyn but was having pooter problems
Just wanted to say im so pleased that George is still well within himself and heres hoping the bovine insulin does the job!!
Your vet sounds very dedicated :)
-
love that little george he has suffered in silence and still so lovable bless him. :luck:
-
Maybe it has started to work ? ;D
-
Thats great that he cares so much for George and hope that George continues to feel well ;D
-
Sounds promising...
-
Lyn ive totally missed the george story since before my puter went to hp...whats (in brief LOL) the latest state of play,... last i knew his insulin wasnt for him and he was given a different type which seemed to be going better..did that one stop working too ?
-
Yes he is :Luv:
-
George is probably the most awkward diabetic cat on the planet lol But also the most loveable :Luv:
Hehe! Although George is gorgeous, I still prefer my own little junkie! :Luv:
-
hope everything goes well on friday.
-
How long will George have to stay in for on this trip, Lyn?
-
Oh! dear hope he will be ok Lyn, your vet has ben so good I'm sure it will bee sorted soon
-
How is George doing?
-
I just caught up with this thread last night and am now a member of the George fan club :ahh:
Let's hope his numbers are down and he's still fighting fit. :Luv:
Can we have a pic? ;D
-
Glad he's still well Lyn :Luv:
My 3 are fine!! Had all 3 of them on my side of the bed last nite. What did i do?? Moulded myself around them
-
Glad he is doing so well despite having such high numbers Lynn.
-
Just (one of the many :)) popping in to say I'm glad George is doing so well.
-
Poor George, it doesnt rain but it pours.
I do hope he is feeling better soon
-
i think diabetics are more suseptible to cystitis due to the glucose in the urine being a great breeding ground for bacteria (if i remember rightly)
Hope he's back to feeling well again soon and this doesnt set him back too much.
-
Oh poor George!!! Glad he seems a lot more comfortable today.
-
Aww, am glad he is better now.
-
Glad he seems better. I was sure I had posted up a well-wish yesterday but apparently I didn't  - probably a senior moment.
-
Dearest George :Luv: :Luv:
-
Blimey!! Even my Sophie doesnt do that!!
-
:Luv: :Luv:
-
Aww, am glad he is seeming so well in himself.
-
I'm glad George is doing well and fingers crossed for Saturday!
-

-
Fingers crossed for him.
-
yeh looks like the new insulin might have already done its job good old george.
lloks like the light at the end of the tunnel at last lyn.
-
Wishing George all the best Lyn :)
-
I hope the new insulin works well - fingers crossed tomorrow goes ok.
-

-
Let us know the results. What a business, fingers crossed for George tomorrow.
-
Bet you cant wait to get him back again :)
-
So sorry to read that you haven't managed to find one that works for him, it must be very worrying and puzzling for you. Fingers crossed they can sort something out for him.
-
Sorry to hear the new insulin doesn't seem to be working any better :( Fingers crossed increasing the dosage may make it work for a bit longer.
-
Sorry to hear the new insulin doesn't seem to be working any better :( Fingers crossed increasing the dosage may make it work for a bit longer.
Same here!
-
I'm thinking of George and you too
-
Do you think the new insulin may be doing its thing, Lyn? It's brill that George is feeling well and lets hope this is the turning of the corner for him. As I mentioned, my (human) friend who has diabetes had to spend absolutely ages getting his medication right.
PS check out my chum's home on the 'Books Galore' thread and have some light relief ;)
-
Everything crossed here :)
-
Lyn - Tan has explained what happened in the thread 'CONFIRMATION'.
I hope that's clarified things sufficiently for you.
-
Sadly Lyn has asked for her account to be deregistered.
We wish you and George the very best x
-
I am saddened to hear this and also want to wish George all the best with his new treatment.
 to him
