Hi everyone,
I recently got a female cat Mitzi & she's not a very well girl....took her to the vets last week (PDSA) and she had an awful crackly sounding chest, really bad arthritus and heart pounding ten to the doz!
Well she was on anti b's for a week & something to get rid of the crackle.....that's almost gone now, so she got some more anti b's, had an x ray and her bloods done and sent off the Glasgow as they wernt happy with their results....
She has arthritus from an old RTA....and they were saying that there is no long term meds for this :( just wondering if there's anything that i can give her? Like evening primrose....?
Good news her heart is fine....but they think that something is up with her kidneys....will have to wait till Tues for the outcome of the bloods!
any suggestions for the arthritus welcome :)

she is gorgeous. Non-med wise, things like glucosamine, chondroitin, green lipped mussle and something else that escapes me at the moment can be used. Not sure about evening primrose oil. Fingers crossed for the results on tues.
-
I cant help coz what i would have recommended that is brilliant is Metacam but as she has kidney probs she cant have it.
hope she continues to get better - she is a sweet girl
-
What a pretty girl :Luv:
Not sure about supplements, but agree with Desley about Glucosamine which is good for joints etc.
What about cod liver oil as that's also good for that sort of thing in humans, not sure about cats tho
-
aww bless her poor little thing. I would get the confirmation about the state of her kidneys first to be honest, as all meds have to be filtered through her kidneys and although making her arthritis less painful may exacerbate her kidney problem
Keep us updated with the little beautiful girl good job she has such a lovely meowmy
-
The vet rang me today asking to bring a urine sample in on Tues to go with the new blood results.......she gave a good tip saying if i put some clean fish tank gravel in her litter tray it will be easier to collect it from corner of tray.....thank heavens for that as i had some awful visions
Thanks peeps x
-
I would try the glucosamine with fish oil rather than fish liver oil. I saw this product arthriaid http://www.hyperdrug.com/prodinfo.asp?number=ARTHRIAID
-
Cheers for that Mark........will wait till tues for full results and will have a word to c if the vet has any idea's also ;)
-
I think it helps if you get as fresh and concentrated a sample as possible. Which is difficult unless you rush to the tray when they wake up after hours asleep.....anyhow if the gravel doesn't work, try this (I ended up doing it much to OH's amusement). Buy as flat a small pack of veggies or whatever (baby corn tray works well) which is plastic and shallow and as she heads off to the tray, try to let her start peeing and then shove it under her tail and you *should* get enough (they don't need much), not have any gravel to filter. Did the vet give you a pipette and sample bottle? They come with some white plasticy cat litter that my lot refuse to use, but you can use the bottle and pipette ;)
PS obviously dishwasher or really hot water to thoroughly clean the veggie flat pack little tray first! And,er, take the veggies out

Cheers Swampmaxmum....no they never gave me anything as she asked by phone......gonna sterilise an old med btl to contain it....ta again x
-
Well had to phone up the vets as couldnt make the app.....Im not too well at all this week, had to go to hosp and feeling pretty down :( vets said i can make app for next week for her so will keep ya's updated x
-
Sorry you've been poorly  Hope you're better very soon and that Mitzi's tests go ok next week.
-
:thanks: Susanne :)
Just back from the vets and really great news.......although there is something wrong with her kidney's it is not life-threatening :wow:
They gave her a steroid inj which lasts 1 month as she only weighs 3kg so they think that she has had muscle loss due to not being very active and not arthritus :wow: :wow: :wow:
Im so pleased for her....OH took her in as im still poorly but able to drive now!
She has to go back again in a month x
-
Great news ;D Sorry to hear you've been poorly, hope you start to perk up soon :)
-
That sounds like good news. Did they say what the problem with her kidneys was?
-
They would of but OH has memory of a fish! Hopefully i'l be able to take her in next month and ask myself ;)
-
Ruth, you can ring the vets and ask her, I would be interested to know what the outcome was.
-
Cheers Des....i'l ring on Monday and post the diagnosis ;)
-
Grrr! rang on Monday and the vet was in theatre, receptionist said she would leave a note for him to call me when he has time....im still waiting!
Saying that its the PDSA and i do suppose they are busy..... :-:
-
Well iv decided to take Mitzi back to the vets as the steroid jab dos'nt seem to be doing much so im phoning for an app first thing Monday morning....will keep you all informed ;)
-
good luck
-
Goodluck from me too!
-
Fingers crossed for Mitzi
-
Hope all is well with Mitzi.
Regarding supplements for arthritis, my Toby boy is on a daily capsule of glucosamine with green-lipped mussel and I can say that a week and a half into the course, it's made a real difference to the old fella. ;D
The one I get is by Denes and it's around £17 for 100 capsules - IMHO well worth it as it's given him a lot of help. Dorwest also do something similar as well.
-
:Luv: hope Mitzi is well :Luv:
-
Hi all and :thanks: for your well wishes :)
Seen a different vet today and she was lovely.......i asked what was wrong with her kidney's and she said she had insufinciency, they could do a biopsy but dont really want to put her through it at the mo as her wheeze is back, she is now on Fortaker tablets until i go back to them in two weeks......
She does have arthritus in her back legs but they think her front legs are due to muscle wastage (not very mobile uc), they said about Metacam but it dos'nt bode well with kidney probs.....
She also mentioned maybe giving her the hills KD could benefit her but she is such a picky eater already and only weighs 3.1kg (yay put .1kg on) that vet agreed to just give her the food i have been ie...Gourmet, Sheba etc....pity she cant eat the biccies cos i know they would help put the weight on......
Well me thinks that poor Mitzi will be on trial and error until hopefully all is stable for her.....
Thanks for your interest :Luv:
-
> Reynard.....would that be okay for her ie; would not affect kidney's or mess with the Fortaker?
-
:Luv: Hi hope you are all well today, good news for Miss Mitzie x
-
> Reynard.....would that be okay for her ie; would not affect kidney's or mess with the Fortaker?
I honestly can't say, since Toby isn't on any other medication other than his supplement. I'd recommend asking your vet just to make sure.
-
Fingers crossed for her, and I would at least try the k/d, RC also do a renal food. Both do it in a dry format too, which I have found goes down better, but obviously you have to watch water intake then to make sure they are getting enough.
-
> Reynard :thanks: will ask vet next time i see her ;)
> Des, is there anywhere i could get any samples of KD/RD? just i know how much of an awkward eater she is :(
-
My vets gave me a sample of the dry K/D, so might be worth asking, not sure if RC do sample bags of their prescription food though.
-
Well back to the vets on Tuesday we trotted.....im pretty upset as she has gone down to 2.85kg now :( they have kept her on the fortiker & she is now on half a steroid tab a day (not anabolic as they had no effect).....
Have asked vet about the green lipped muscle which he is looking into for me......
>Reynard.....they are cheaper at vetuk......£13.?? for 90 ;)
My other vet is gonna give me some free samples (KD) when i take Maisey for her neuter stitches out on Friday......
Swings & round-a-bouts :(

Posting on behalf of Ruth (Bazsmum)
Some sad news,
Mitzi has gone with the angels to Rainbow Bridge.
She crossed over on Tuesday, she wasnt getting any better and the vets had tried everything they could but nothing more could be done for her.
Sleep well little lady and know you were loved till the end.
RIP Mitzi
-
So sorry to hear the sad news, RIP Mitzi - she'll be safe and sound at the bridge by now
-
RIP Mitzi
Ruth for whats its worth (just reading the thread just now) it sounds like that sudden weight loss and deteriation at the end might have signified something more sinister going on, cancer maybe and then nothing could have been done, not much help to you and how you feel now i know but atleast you're not left with questioning yourself could anything else have been done.
-
RIP Mitzi
I agree with Lynn, you did your best by her
-
Thanks guys :Luv:
I gain strength from the knowledge that she is now pain free & making up for lost time over at Rainbow bridge......she was such a sweetie for the very short time i knew her.....
