Hi there
My young cat Archie had to have half of his tail amputated at Easter time after dislocating it. Six weeks later it has not healed properly and the tissue at the end is dead. I was told today he has to in to the vets tomorrow for yet more surgery. I am feeling pretty frantic and wondering if the vet botched his op. Would be pleased to hear from any one else who has had a cat who has had to have his tail amputated. Thanks :rofl: :rofl:

Our Alpha Male Tiger lost his tail after he played with a car in April 2001, he had all bar a one inch stump amutated and spent about 3 weeks instead of 3 months on rest - he is a 22lb feral boy but now a sweetheart but at that time didn't do cage well.
He can jump, run, and do all normal cat things and we followed the advioce given by the vet re rest and how to approach life with the changes - sort of a bum lift!
He has now had no tail longer than he had one, has grown to suit it and is a big rumpy stumpy and will answer to that!

Over the years we have had loads of cats who needed to have there tail amputated, all have adapted remarkably well.

Our Cat Ernie Bilko had part of his tail amutated and he was fine, he was a big ginger Tom my husband brought him home from a railway station in march 82. He was like a big lion but a big softy, I once woke up with a dead Rat on my pillow which he left me. It was the fastest I'd ever got out of bed, we did live right by the river then. when we moved here he went missing for about 5 weeks but we found him in the end. R I P Ernie. March 82 till october 91 :(

Thanks so much for your replies they have really helped. I did not realise there were so many cats with amputated tails. Archie is due to have his op at any time now so feeling very nervous . The vet said he will have to wear a collar for two weeks so not looking forward to that. :thanks:

My Bailey recently had his tail amputated after a car accident.
The tip of his tail turned into a big scab of dead skin, and after about 6 weeks I was about to take him back to the vets ,then i came home from work one day and the big scab was away...no where to be seen, and now he just has a wee cut left which is healing nicely.
He's quite able without his tail too....jumping up to the same high places as he used to. It is sad when they need to get thier tail amputated...I hated it when Bailey lost his coz he had gorgeos markings on it...but he's just as cute with it gone.

Thanks to suzi and Gill for your messages. I was very sorry to hear about poor Bailey's tail, but it helps alot to know that he is coping so well.
Archie's second op. went well, the vet has made a good job. Archie is getting used to the collar and has been scaring our visiting cats when he lumbers towards them. Thankgoodness his little tail seems to be healing this time. The vet hopes to take the stiches out next Monday, so he will not chew them. Fingers crossed that will be our last vets visit. I do not think I will be able to relax until the furs grown back! :thanks:

Glad to hear the op went well and that he's adjusted to life with a lampshade on for the next few weeks!
Fingers crossed he makes a quick recovery with his new mini tail, sound like its healing better already than the first time round.

We took Archie to the vet today for a check up and he was very pleased with him. His little tail is healing well and the vet managed to take out some of the stitches. We have to take him back in two weeks and as long as he leaves his tail alone the collar can come off! :innocent:
