A wolf and a donkey share a cage in the northwestern town of Patok in Albania, about 40 km (25 miles) from capital the Tirana, May 9, 2007. The donkey was brought into the enclosure to be fed to the wolf, which was caught in the northern Albanian mountains four months ago. The animals have since become attached to each other, cohabitating in the cage for the last 10 days, and attracting curious villagers and local media.
These poor animals live in misery, the scared wolf cowers behind his donkey companion. They live in appalling filthy conditions with little room.
Please be a voice for these animals and ask for their freedom.

How sad.
Two beautiful, gentle creatures treated like scum BY scum.
-
I wish I never set eye's on this petition......it's really upset me seeing the fear in their eyes :'( :'(
:censored: :censored: :censored:
I think there's a possibility they will be saved as there is a lot of media attention apparently, no one with a heart will let them get away with what they're planning.
-
Signed. They have such beautiful faces, I hope they are saved.
x
-
They both look starved.
Albania could do with some positive PR.
Why can't someone like shirley bassey spend her £50,000 helping animals like this instead of on a frock?

From what i read in the paper yest, the awful man went out and trapped the wolf and took him back to that awful cage over two weeks ago. He threw the donkey in with it 16 days ago to feed the wolf but it's been days and the wolf and donkey have bonded out of fear . >:( >:( >:(

Here's an email written by the lady who started the petition:
"Hi,
We already have a sanctuary
and transport provided for both animals, its just a matter of help
from inside and to persuade the owner of the animals that they would
be better off in the sanctuary where they will be cared for and will
be living in an appropriate environment. The petition will most
probably be sent to the owner, whos name I have chosen not to put on
the petition.
We have contacted so many organizations in our appeal for help and we
are still awaiting their responses. Rest assured we are doing all we
can to help these animals, it will just be a matter of time.
I spoke to the WSPA on the phone and they have no interest in helping
us move the animals to a sanctuary outside of Albania, they said it
was not an option. Its a shame as they work closely with two animal
organizations in Albania who I emailed aswell! but still no response.
In the meantime I started this petition as I think all the support for
these animals to be freed and sent to a better life will help us
greatly in our cause."

The awful thing is, even after all the media attention, there are still only 4,700 signatures. Not enough to push someone into doing the right thing. I did a google search and there are lots of references to it but stupid ignorant "newspapers" like the Daily Mirror have made a joke out of it with a headline like "wolf makes ass of owner" >:(
Edit - I checked back after adding OH's name to petition. In less than 5 minutes, 19 signatures had been added ;D
-
???!! :-:
I hope the keeper of these animals sees sense, what an arse!!.

:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
IS THERE REALLY A GOD UP THERE IM SPEECHLESS
LETS HOPE THEY ARE ABLE TO SAVE THEM BOTH AND CATCH THE MAN THAT DID THIS AND LOCK HIM A A CAGE WITH EVERYONE FROM PURRSSSSSSSSS

Poor poor souls ... wolves and donkeys and both creatures that do not do well as solitary animals which is why they have probably "bonded" ... safety in numbers and all that.
I do hope something can be done to saves these two.
I have signed the petition and there 6500 signatures.
-
I hope they can be released soon.
Signed.

Some good news on the donkey at least, and with your help, hopefully we can get the wolf sorted out as well :Luv: :Luv:
I've had the following:
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/171270834
UPDATE from myself, the author : A group of us are working hard to help these animals and we do have a sanctuary to take them and transport provided. We are now appealing for assistance from an animal organization inside Albania to help us. If you can help please message me.
I would also like to add that the way of life in Albania is different and yes their animal welfare is lacking but the person who owns these animals is not a bad person, they are not being intentionally cruel, they need our help and education.
IMPORTANT UPDATE 19.05.07
The owner has the intention to build a zoo and buy other wild animals!!!
We are still working hard to help both animals.
If you would like to help us further please see the Action Alert below.

The owner has the intention to build a zoo and buy other wild animals!!!
I find that statement quite frightening. Quite obviously the owner does not know the first thing about animals and their care.

I totally agree Ela ... it does seem very worrying that someone with so little knowledge of animal care and welfare could be allowed to have yet more animals to terrorise and torture intentionally or or not.
Good news that the Donkey has now got some grass and appears to be out of danger ... fingers crossed the poor wolf will also soon be allowed the same luxury ... he looks so sad and lonely and will now be even more scared now his "friend" has been moved.
-
Update.
"Apparently" the donkey is now cage-free
http://animaladvocates.com/cgi-bin/newsroom.pl/read/16175
-
What about poor wolfy?
-
I suppose they can't let a wolf free as it will run off. It should be ideally free in the wilderness or in a sanctuary where it has plenty of space etc. In Albania I doubt it very much.
Edit - Just found this. A sanctuary in Italy has offered both animals a home. Not happened yet but looks hopeful

-
Fingers crossed Wolfy can go to Italy :Luv:
-
Apparantly the donkey is now cage free. The poor wolf looks so desperate for his freedom. :(
-
Does anybody have an update on these two?
-
The wolf is now FREE!!!!!!
The Ministry of Environment in Albania have issued the following notice on their website :
The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Water Administration would like
to inform that Mr. Rrok Hoti (Kurbin region) has released the Wolf Canis lupus in the forestry economy Mal-Bardhe (Kurbin region).
The Forestry Service Directorate of Lac in its letter Nr. 90 on 06/06/07 informs that the release of the Wolf took place after the communication with Mr. Hoti that the imprisonment of the wolf violates the acts 20, 21 and 23 of the Law Nr. 9587, on 20.07.2006 “For the preservation of
biodiversity”. Furthermore the imprisonment violates also the acts of
Regulation Nr. 1 on 23.02.2005 “For the protection, management of wildlife and hunting” in accordance with the Law nr. 7875 on 23.11.1994 “For the protection of wildlife and hunting”.
