Title: A Trappers Tale
Post by: Teresa Pawcats on May 14, 2007, 10:35:44 AM
A Trappers Tale

Location 35 miles away from Paws Inn and information received that an injured feral needs help.
Our trusty trio ( Claire, Grumpy and yours truly ) armed with trap crush cages and pilchards are soon on site; an enormous business park which we soon realise has more than 1 feral. There are lots of different security stations too so it meant a good walk round them all to explain what we wanted to do and why and of course getting them on our side.
Traps set we sat down ready to tuck into chocolate donuts, have you ever tasted them through pilchard covered fingers- wonderful . We spotted other ferals that all need to be neutered and then by a miracle our injured girl goes into the trap. We called her Little Miss Sunshine; it turned out her injuries were old, a broken ankle ,broken toe and one and a half toes had been torn away; the vet said she had been coping well with the injury so amputation wasn’t advisable so spay, worm and flea treated this lovely girl is now back at the colony  :).
We spotted a heavily pregnant girl and hoped to catch her last night. Security took us in a building where he thought she may be; it involved a bit of crawling around and yours truly crawled flat on her belly to investigate one likely area getting plastered in cement from head to foot , while the more intelligent and ladylike Claire found an easier way in and as ever remained immaculate in appearance. I now know how they did make up on Worzel Gummidge   . I feel I should mention that at this point Grumpy (oh) was sat in the car eating the 2 tiny pieces of fudge that was all the food we had between us  , typical greedy man :shify:
The security guard had warned us about a big black Tom who is very nasty towards them, he said he wouldn’t fit in the trap; well the lovely lad went straight in and is currently losing a couple of nuts and more ticks than I have ever seen on a cat before. We have called him Big Daddy as he`s obviously the Alpha male, he`s a good lad despite spending hours in the car he hung onto everything until I handed him into the vets this morning and promptly sprayed everywhere, the nurse wasn`t amused must admit I was delighted. :evillaugh:
Sadly we didn’t spot the pregnant girl last night, but will be back on site tonight to return Big daddy and reset our traps; will take some pics before we release him.

Big Daddy has left his friends The Tick and Flea family at the vets along with a part of his anatomy he would have preferred to keep and is now sat in the crush cage in the kitchen waiting for the journey home this evening. He is even bigger than I realised and fills the cage so getting a good picture is out;maybe he will pose when hes back in the wild. He looks superb now he has been cleaned up; he reminds me of our dear Growee on the bridge, definately my kind of boy.
Wonder what I`ll get plastered in tonight; must admit we hardly ever stop laughing.

Oh Teresa! I'm sitting here wetting myself with laughter, being given some seriously odd looks by a very bemused Siamese cat.

Big Daddy sounds like a real character, and so does Miss Sunshine. I hope the release goes well and that you find the other lass you're looking for.

Teresa sounds like my kind of trapping!  I have full Hy vis gear as it always rains when I am trapping so I glow from a distance and an somewhat noticeable!

He is a lovely boy just something about the blacks and Miss Sunshine is gorgeous looks like our Amber

I think we should write a book it would be a best seller!!!!

Little Miss Feisty was waiting to greet us last night; she could almost have been holding a banner saying "wheres the trap ;Come on feed me" :evillaugh:
So Big Daddy stayed in the crush cage a while longer while we unloaded the trap from my now seriously smelly car and set it up.
All I can say is that considering Miss Feisty had been so eager to go into the trap she was mightily ungrateful when it went off and even more so when we tried to transfer her to the crush cage, thankfully I enlisted the help of a brick wall that just happened to be standing there.
Big Daddy didnt hang around long enough to say farewell but during the coarse of the evening was spotted doing the rounds and re scenting all his favourite spots and very likely showing off his new Tick and Nut Free image

No Millys Mum,this one has now been spayed; we havent seen the pregnant one and its my guess she has gone off and given birth somewhere in which case it will be a 5 week wait until she brings her kittens out,but we are patient if nothing else. The pregnant one is a Minimopsical look alike.

Well, Little Miss Feisty has gone home and didn't even have the manners to say thank you for such a lovely excursion as she charged out of the carrier back into the bushes where we trapped her.  Two minutes later she was across the deserted car park and onto the fields behind.

No sign of any others tonight apart from Little Miss Sunshine who polished off two pouches before heading off to join Little Miss Feisty in the pub for last orders to moan about the fact that they wish the trusty trio would get lost and leave them alone.

Until the next adventure............................

Our Trusty Trio were on site trapping again yesterday.
Its quite amazing how much food is needed to catch one female cat especially when Grumpy is on the team; he needed to eat 16 chocolate Mini muffins to build up his strength and then needed a Big Mac and large Milk shake to maintain strength levels
Talking of food, we were disappointed to spot Miss Minniemuffin happily eating a dish of cat food on our arrival ,fortunately she just couldnt resist the added bonus of a pilchard baited trap  and was soon in our care.
We spotted Misses Sunshine and Feisty during the course of the afternoon who both looked well but did not want to come too near us- can`t think why  :evillaugh:
It was with a great sigh of relief that we discovered that Minniemuffin wasn`t pregnant as first believed and now she too has been spayed and will be returned to site.
We think we just have Tippytoes left to catch now but just in case we have a certain insider snapping cats with his camera phone for us,isnt technology wonderful.  :)

Claire and I  loaded our traps into the Pilchard mobile for another happy adventure this morning. Our destination a cottage in the middle of nowhere off a beaten farm track full of potholes with no parking.
Traps set we wandered back down the lane to the car to sit and wait, luckily it wasnt too long before first kitten went in,we transferred her to our crush cage  rebaited the trap and headed towards the car with the kitten, mother cat and remaining kitten were soon trapped and we just managed to get down the lane in time to stop a passing farmer from releasing them. Farmers wife a nasty piece of goods tells us get everything out the way and shut the gate to the cottage, our mother cat and her kittens were in two carriers on one side of the lane and we were on the other as the thundering sound of running sheep sped between us, we know the true meaning of a Sheep Run now. Nasty Farmers wife then tells us chase down lane to farmer who is on his bike and talk to him because she thinks there are more kittens; well we caught up with the farmer just as he was setting a calf trap, thankfully there were no more kittens but he was a lovely though henpecked man who was able to tell us that the mother cat was a domestic who had been dumped there some time ago.We learnt that a calf run was about to begin and sped off hopefully never to return.
We have called the cats Isabella (mum) shes lovely though very greedy and looks pregnant.
Kittens are Larry the Lamb, and Daisy after the cows, they are around 13weeks and very wild.
Forgot to mention we were out last night too and completed our work at a different colony as mum has been spayed by us already, we caught the last 2 kittens, Lily and Tom 2 gorgeous little spitfires.
Tonight well at 1am to be precise when a very unsavoury pub closes we our out again as it seems some feral kittens are stuck under the pub decking too young to get out and no mum around to feed them but thats another tale for another day

Little Tom has reluctantly had some handling this morning while little Lily hissed and growled for all she is worth; Tom is using the litter tray already but Lily is piddling the bed in a bid to keep me busy.  :)

Where on earth have you put them all?

Little Larry is the image of a baby Blip, even down to the small number of white eyebrows!

Edit - I misread the captions, it is Larry who is the image of Blip

Goodness forgot to update on Isabella,Larry and Daisy. Isabella is doing her best to steal all the food, despite their age Larry and Daisy are still feeding from her. She is a lovely affectionate mum and will be a great help to me in calming the babies who are quite dangerous at this stage, though I`ve h managed to stroke a very reluctant Larry this morning. Thankfully this little family are using their tray saves me renaming Paws Inn to Piddle Towers

Christine we juggled and juggled yesterday, (thankfully I had Claire to help me,she is an absolute Gem) the hard part is squeezing in and maintaining proper isolation facilities which thankfully we managed but only just. I am terrified of the phone ringing now.

edited as I had put Jack instead of Larry, gosh I must be senile Jack is my grandson

Larry and Daisy are 13/14 weeks old and going to take a lot of handling to bring them round, they are still suckling on Isabella who decided to show me her belly yesterday;horror of horrors shes pregnant, fortunately she should have another 4 weeks ish before the birth, please God find me some space to split them up.

VERY pleased to report that Teresa has worked wonders with Lily and Tom in the last week.  I actually managed to stroke them both and my hand survived!  Their tails now go up when T approaches them and there is no hissing or growling.  I actually watched her pick them both up for a cuddle, but admit to chickening out myself!!  Small steps, but such a great improvement.  I have to admit to shedding a little tear as they really needed to be rescued, but it is so heartbreaking when you know they don't understand what is happening and are scared and don't realise that you just want to help them.  They are so much more relaxed now.

I can't wait until next week.................

Lily and Tom are totally affectionate with me now they just need to get used to other people. Think Aunty Claire can cuddle them at the weekend.

Been concentrating on Larry and Daisy Isabellas kittens as they are going to need a lot of socialisation, both have been allowing full length back strokes while they are eating but the minute Daisy realises its me she goes for the kill, Larry is getting much better but then I usually find the boys easier to tame.

Been meaning to make a confession for a few days and not got round to it.
I was handling the very wild Daisy trying to tame her and my hand came upon a strange little growth,I had a good grope trying to decide what it was and worried sick I spent ages trying to get to the bottom of things.
Daisy has been renamed to Rory.
