Does your vet sell it ... maybe they can let you try a couple of trays.  Alternatively check the renal products on Zooplus .. http://www.zooplus.co.uk/ask?q=renal+cat&num=20

I haven't tried the Royal Canin renal but the other Royal Canin alutrays I've used have been a different consistency from the pouches - eg Royal canin sensitivity in the pouches is 'small pieces in jelly' type product but the sensitivity alutrays were a very thick pate.

I was going to say the same as Sam about Zooplus, the range of foods available now is mind boggling.

Try contacting Royal Canin they are usually really good with trial samples

Wish I could remember the site but if you do a search you will find you can get small boxes which have 10-12 in, this forgettable site was also well priced.

Have nt used renal but certainly I found the GI food in little tins was thick and horrible compared to pouchs that looked  normal.
