James Wong believes that if you are going to the trouble of growing your own fruit and veg you might as well take the plunge and choose delicious, high-yield foods that are expensive to buy in the shops yet easy to grow. Here are 2 of his recommended ’stars’ and each packet comes with instructions on how to sow and grow as well as a recipe idea.
Asparagus pea
The easy to grow asparagus pea is actually a member of the runner bean family and produces tiny, curiously-shaped pods which taste like a combination of garden peas and nutty asparagus.
The very ornamental compact growth makes it suitable for growing in pots or hanging baskets and the more you pick the more you get.
Microgreen herbs
These 21st century sprouted salad leaves can be grown indoors all year all year round on a sunny windowsill and will be ready for grazing on with a couple of snips of the scissors in just 5-10 days. They taste like oriental salad leaves.
On offer is one packet of each of the above and if you’re generous I’ll throw in a packet of Sutton’s Tomato summer sensation mix (a total of 20 seeds from 11 different varieties).
