We've always had issues with her occasionally throwing up, but it's become more frequent. Every night for the last few nights, so she's off to see her nice Irishman ;-) They may have to take blood which will be interesting. Last time it took 4 of them....

Update on the cat: She's lost a bit of weight, but the vet didn't think it was overactive thyroid, or anything awful, but she's on anti sickness meds, and has had blood work done. Results in a couple of days.

No vomit this morning and the 2nd lot of meds went down ok. She's a lot less feisty than she used to be, so we were able to hold her still. It's still a two person job... and a towel is essential. Wrapping her up like a tortilla is comical, but she still has the power to claw me.

The blood tests were all clear, she's going in for xray and ultrasound on friday, so fingers crossed!
Thanks god for insurance though, last night's bill was £140, and that was just a blood test and checkup.

A bit more info.
Basically the only abnormalities in her blood was evidence of mild gastroenteritis, either she's had it or got it. Which would explain the sickness. I therefore queried the necessity of the X ray and scan, but they do want to check for other possible issues. She's eating properly again, and not being sick anymore, so her weight should go back to normal. Oh I forgot to mention, she also had her claws trimmed which is why I am still alive

Pleased that it seems to be nothing untoward, as she is a more senior cat I think it's a good idea to carry on with the tests (especially as she is insured!) as it gives you a benchmark for any future issues and also the peace of mind that she is fit and healthy :)
I recently took both my 5 year old cats in for a dental scale & polish on the vets advice, I was a bit miffed to find that the operating vet thought one of them didn't even need a dental (despite the vet who examined him initially saying that whilst he wasn't as bad as his brother he would need one in due course) so after speaking with me didn't carry it out. Anyway, once I got over my miffed-ness I saw the positive in that he had the pre-op blood tests so at least I know all his organs are functioning as they should be and although that cost me £60 odd when it wasn't even needed I technically saved £200 by niot having the dental - glass half full :naughty:

I'm being given conflicting advice now, so I don't have a clue what to do :-(

It can be so confusing when you get conflicting advice. It's happened to me. I queried with the vet what it was they were making the suggestion for - what they thought might or might not show up. What they said didn't sound convincing so I declined. As it happened, Paddy went on to live for a good fifteen years more, and didn't give us a day of bother until he had a stroke at 15 (lived until 20). We changed vets soon after that, and can't fault our current vet (except for the fact he's a bit dour!)
I'd say if you're not sure, just ask them the question, and then go with your gut instinct on their answer. You'll sense if what they're saying is plausible or not.
If you're still unsure after you ask them, and gut instinct doesn't help, then it will do little harm to have the procedures carried out, and the cost will be worth it for peace of mind. Am keeping everything crossed that you'll get a satisfactory explanation and be able to take it from there.

Yesterday was quite an ordeal for Pegs. No food from 8pm the previous night, anti sickness meds in the morning, taken to the vets, sedated, shaved, scanned, x-rayed, poked, prodded and 2 car trips. It wasn't over even when she got home. She ate a small amount of plain cooked white fish (aftercare recommendations), and the vet said to finish the anti sickness meds, so we had to give her a dose last night after all she'd been through that day.
No wonder she ran away and hid :p

This morning, apart from the shaved belly (which she keeps hidden, afterall most females don't like their nipples on display for all to see), she's more or less back to normal. Purring away very happily, and loving the rest of the fish.
This week has been pretty bloody awful tbh. I've tried to be positive, but late at night I couldn't help wondering what was wrong. Now I realise Peggy is fine, I can see how much this week has been good practice for anything that might happen in the future.

Ok Peggy's now more or less back to normal. They did one final blood test to check for pancreatitis, and that came up "high", so they think that was most likely the cause. I have good advice from them on what to do if it comes up again.
I know some of you guys are a little suspicious of vets, but mine does seem to know his stuff. As I know very little about cat physiology, I'm going with his ideas ;)

Very pleased to hear Peggy's settling back to normal. :)
I think we're wary of some of the big franchise style vets that have appeared over the last few years, who seem to have a policy of doing whatever they can to relieve their clients of cash, whether or not the circumstances merit it, and especially following the expose they did of certain veterinary practices who relied on the fact "the insurance would cover it"
Finding a vet you're happy with is a great thing, and there are many many good ones out there. Am glad you and Peggy have one you can trust. :hug: It helps a lot, especially when you're in a vulnerable situation with a sick cat (or dog or whatever)
I like our current vet too - he's a one man band, but he's wholly committed to giving a first rate service - and he's always patiently answered my (sometimes vigorous and persistent) questioning and been willing to listen to my input and instincts. That buys a fair bit of credit in my book. :)

Did the vet at any time mention hairballs?
Just a thought, as whenever my older guys start vomiting more frequently that usual it has always been a lingering hairball that eventually pops out and the vomit magically dries up. :shify:
I'm also a sceptic of chain vet practises and thankfully have now found an independent I trust entirely. Hope you can too. :)
