Title: My new girl is coming home!
Post by: Beth82 on August 17, 2012, 21:41:30 PM

Hi all

Well, I joined this forum in march 2011, in the hopes of finding the perfect cat to join my family.  It's been a fair old slog but I've finally found the right kitty.

I really didn't want a kitten, after much thought I just didn't want to run about after a kitten and 2 young children.  I ran into a brick wall with rescue centers but I kept contacting them every few months, even got called by 2 sanctuarys to go and meet a couple of kitties and as much as I adored them, I just didn't get that 'vibe'.

I've been fixated on a ragdoll or bengal cat, mainly for their temperament with kids.  So I contacted local breeders to see if they had any rescues etc.  So a few weeks ago I found a bengal breeder who lives 10 miles from me, she was looking for a home for an ex breeding queen.  Her name is Honey, she's a brown rosetted, fab personality, friendly and gets on with the kids.  She was only bred twice i think it was, as her kittens suffered from flat chests, just a genetic issue but nothing that will effect her.

I am bringing her home this sunday and I can't wait.  I've gone out and bought all the cat needs, treats and toys.

It's been over a year looking for the right cat and I am glad I held out for her  :Luv:

This is a pic from the breeder, I'll put more up when I get her home.

This is her playing with one of her surviving girls

Thank you, i'm really excited.  I've not got her home yet and i keep thinking 'ohh i'll get her a friend' but then sanity kicks in and i think she would prefer to be the sole cat for a while.  She's been surrounded by cats and kittens for years, might be good to let her live in some sort of peace lol

she is lovely, hope she fits in well, they are quite busy cats and mine doesn't like being handled but likes a fuss on her own terms

I'm too excited, tomorrow's the big day!  :Luv:

And then I saw that a kitty needed rehoming and thought to myself "hmmm i wonder if honey would get on with that kitty" I have cat fever

Oooh she's delicious. Reminds me of Green who lived next door. Lovely girl.
If you feel the need for two, now is definitely the time to make that decision. Once no.1 has established a territory, it's harder to get no.2 to fit in. If they're both arriving together, they have the same grounding.

I would go for the pair - no extra fuss/hassle for you and they could become best pals ?

Open for comment from the worldly wise here....

She has 2 daughters that were her only surviving kitties, I think they are around 5-6 months old.  I can never tell with bengal kitties, they are so damn bashful/playful, like little cannon balls.  I can't afford to pay out right for a kitty as they are £350 though :(  I'm going to a local animal rescue place before I pick honey up today, so will see if there are any calm social type cats that need homing.

Pretty sure my dad is about to rip me another hole over wanting another cat though lol

Posche Bengal is besotted with Casper ragdoll and they make an odd pair he is 7.5kgs and she is 3.5 and she is firmly in charge and so different from the sad little girl I took in as they wanted to PTS as she was so mixed up and calling so we sorted the second and let Casper work his magic and now one year on she goes out to play and yowls to let us know she wants to come back in to the inside cat side of the house

I came home with just her, bit of a hell ride home.  I had a cardboard cat carrier, she broke out of that.  It was like the hulk bursting through a wall  :shy:  Lots of fur flying around the car

As soon as I got home, she literally just settled in with no issue.  It turns out that she is a rather vocal kitty too  and loves to play!

Having a little snoop around.

The breeder said that she may not breeder honey's daughter and may rehome her in 2 months time, so I've said if she does, to let me know.  It be nice for honey to have her daughter with he again, they were stuck at eachother's side

Honey is adorable, well done.  :1st place:

I wonder why her previous owners are considering breeding from her daughter, didn't they say the kittens were flat chested? It would be nice to have the two girls back together.   :agreed:

Yeah, tbh she said she'd more than likely rehome her than keep her.  Fingers crossed she comes to me!

:drool; :drool; :drool; shes gorgeous!!  ;D ;D
she definitely looke like she settling in well!!  ;D ;D
- like you said earlier, shes probably enjoying the peace for the time being!  :evillaugh: :evillaugh: but i'm sure if her daughter becomes available she'll equally welcome the company - especially to burn of all that energy together  ;D ;D

*cough* not that i'm encouraging any underlying crazy cat lady tendancies  :shify: :shify:  :evillaugh: :evillaugh:

  no encouragement needed

I took her out for a little stroll, what with the humidity  and I thought that if she could get a quick sniff and mark out her small territory, she might calm down the vocal part lol  it worked, she's as quiet as a mute mouse!

She is stunning and Im so glad she has settled so well  :Luv2:

The breeder should not be breeding her daughters though with the flat chested genetic problem
Title: Re: My new girl is coming home!
Post by: Beth82 on August 20, 2012, 06:30:26 AM

Got a slight issue, she's not happy around the kids, even when the kids are quiet.  She growls and hisses, she doesn't strike but runs off to her little place.  She was fine with the kids when we went to see her  :scared:

Figured she just needs to get use to them, I'm under no illusion, I think she will eventually tolerate them until they are older.  It makes me want her daughter even more now, so that she has that companion to keep her company.

She seems to have bonded with me straight away, she loves to play, curls up with me, endlessly talks to me

Beth, a bit of spitting is natural, she needs time to adjust to your kids and as she's out of her comfort zone at the moment will still be feeling a tad phased by it all.  :scared:

When I moved in with OH, Pursley didn't like me at all, and was quite angry with me for weeks. I had to ignore her spitting and hope her temper improved, which it did, and once she'd got to realise I was actually quite free with the cat treats she took a different view and is now very friendly.

Give it time, and ask the kids to keep the noise down and walk away when she starts being defensive, eventually she'll come around.  :)

She is just the prettiest little thing, so pleased for you both.  ;D

Post by: Beth82 on August 21, 2012, 10:23:38 AM
thank you for the advice, much appreciated.

The kids approach her quietly and as soon as she hisses, they move away and she trots ooff.  When there is a stair gate inbetween her and the kids, she is fine  and when the kids dangle her 'dabird' over the gate, she plays and forgets her issues for a minute or so

She is attached to me, as soon as she hears me get up in the morning, she runs upstairs and greets me with her vocal ability and a cuddle.  She loves snuggles and playing.  She doesn't use her claws in rough play and she adores belly rubs!

Sound advice Sheila.  Its very early days, and as you already recognise, she's had her world turned upside down with unfamiliar things, place and people.

It would be strange for us so  its no different for them, except they didn't know it was going to happen, whereas you and your family did.
I have a similar reaction to children, and a tendency to head for the door  :evillaugh:

She looks very comfy in her new bed and its great that she's chatting away to you already.   :)   Bet you're well chuffed.    :Luv:

Another bit of advice to add to Sheilas, try putting a cardboard box or boxes with a cat size hole that she can rush in if she feels scared

Cat fever has taken over, I'm getting honey's kitten this weekend!

How do you think she'd react? She would have been away from her baby for 6 days by this point but her kitten is around 6 months old and they were joined at the hip!

Very pleased for you. I'm sure Honey will be delighted and relieved tgo see a familiar face and it should help the new baby settle with you and the kids. What's her name?  ;D ;D ;D

She's called aurora, this is her;

I know some people are against buying from breeders but her mummy was needing a new home and as her baby isn't too happy and honey would like the company, figured it was best as an all rounder

I don't think you should worry too much about ethics in this case Beth, these two weren't going to be bred from (again) so are a kind of rescue.  :you go girl:

I know loads of ex-breeding queens get dumped and end up in rescue, you're just cutting out the middle man. At least now you've agreed to take Aurora they won't be tempted to try her with one litter, so you've stopped at least one set of kittens reaching the market.

No, well done you, I think you're brilliant and hope the beautiful Aurora is as happy as her Mum will be to see her.

Does this mean the kids get one each ?  :)

lol Honey is still coming round to the little human idea.  she's sat in the  front room with them this morning without hissing for about 20 mins, then strolled off.  The kittten is like a cannon ball, more like the kids will be keeping her entertained lol

Beth, you're a diamond.  ;D

I'd let Aurora have a few days with her Mum first, though, as she'll smell funny when she's been to the vet and won't be up to defending herself against any adverse reactions from Honey, so best to let them get re-acquainted before the Op.  :catplay2:

When is she coming?

I have a similar reaction to children, and a tendency to head for the door  :evillaugh:

I too suffer from this....although i do try to keep the spitting to a minimum  :shify: :shify:

I think Honey will be fine  ;D and great advice from Sheila & Gill too :)
Shes bonded with you, so shes feeling safe in general and once Aurora arrives  (shes gorgeous btw :drool; :drool; and will be lovely for them both to be together  ;D) Honey might just feel a little less on edge as the familiarity of her daughter could mean they will feed off each others confidence  :)
Also the Little Humans could just give her a treat when they see her and do the playing with the Da Bird and she will associate them with positive things  :) but as she is spending more time in the same room before running for the hills, I think its just a matter of time  ;D

I love the photos of her outside  ;D ;D she looks so confident and happy too  ;D ;D
You're doing a grand job  :) x

you'd think bengals would be bigger as a medium sized cat but they are small and slinky.  Although they aren't light in weight lol

All I could hear last night was thud wollap bang, thud............went down stairs this morning thinking the wost but the house is looking good.  Honey was on my bed last night, felt her jump up but her take off to jump onto something higher made the bed shake  :-:
