Title: Good News for Karlo!!!!!!!
Post by: cazzer on June 10, 2011, 15:57:06 PM
A while ago I posted on here about my beautiful ten month old wegie kitten Karlo. He was walking crouched down with his front legs and had a lot of gas in his abdomen and swelling in his lympyh nodes. However following AB's he started walking normally, we never did discover what the actual problem was. However we did discover he was carrying the coronavirus. As soon as he became ill {before even we knew he was carrying the virus} I was convinced it was FIP as had already lost one cat to it [my much missed Omar]. However he is again starting to walk oddly again. We have an appointment tonight for him tonight at vet's.     Vet said that if it happened again she would want to do a biopsy.

please think of us both . I already have poor Ginger with lymphoma who won't be with us long [he was diagnosed in January].

I'm nearly in tears already and have yet to tell my OH

I'm already so upset

thank you everyone for the vibes for the little man. Back from the vets and Karlo was a star. He wasn't happy having his tummy examined [but belly rubs was another matter ]. He doesn't have a temperature unlike last time and his belly isn't as bad as last time. He's got painkiller and metron to take. We've got to see how he does over the weekend and take him back on Monday, with hopefully a fecal sample. Depending on what happens it will be a biopsy next week. He got belly rubs and a kiss from Kate so he wasn't too unhappy with the experience. She said she even wanted to take him home. He would of gone too the tart! She says there is still lots of things it could be so I guess I have to try and be positive.

thanks both

Feeling very despondent this morning. Karlo may be a bit brighter in himself [but that could be due to the painkiller]. His walking is not any better though. Its just so hard seeing him so uncomfortable all the time. I think its worse this time because last time he was at the vet hospital whereas now he is at home.

It's so distressing for us to see our beloved cats unwell even though we know we are doing all we can for them    You say Karlo is looking brighter which is good, even if it is due to the painkillers, hopefully the vet visit tomorrow will be a step closer to finding out what is wrong and getting him better.

Post by: cazzer on June 13, 2011, 21:01:26 PM
thank you everyone

well my happiness has been tempered slightly by a trip to the vet. She says it could still be down to the pain killer alone that we are seeing the improvement although thinks this is unlikely as there has been a gradual steady improvement in his walking whereas if it was down to the pain killer that there may have been slight dips when he due another painkiller. (He's been getting them every 8 hours, so would expect to see a decline in his improvement at 7 hours???}. We have agreed to keep him on AB for longer and reduce the pain killer to twice a day to see what effect that has. At the moment we've said no to the biopsy. However she suspects whatever the unidentified problem is will reoccur once the AB have stopped and that we will have to do it  :'(.      She took a blood test and will get back to us with the result of this and the fecal sample. Karlo of course was a absolute star and wanted his usual ration of belly rubs!
Title: Re: Vibes for Karlo please

I hope the sample and bloods will reveal what it causing Karlo's problems and that it is soon sorted. Please give him a belly rub from me if he has not already had his daily ration.

Thought I had better update you all with the good news.      Karlo is walking virtually normally now.        He has just had a game of chase the bouncy ball and before that he was kicking the hell out of the kitty kicker.    Haven't seen him play that much for ages.     He has had very little pain killer today either [we've cut it from 3 per day to only 1].      So the improvement must be down to the AB rather than the pain killler.     Which has got to be good news.     Not had the results of the blood/fecal sample yet so that will be Monday.      Of course what will happen when the AB's stop is another matter.

just had a call back from Kate our vet.

She's had the results back from the states re karlo's blood test. One of the enzymes that was he was tested for has come back very low. She said that it was unusual because would normally associated this with pancreatitis [which he was tested for but didn't have]. Also would expect it to be associated with loss of weight despite good appetite. {Karlo always eats well but certainly hasn't lost weight}. Alternatively it could be from where the pancreas hasn't been formed properly but this is very rare. So its not really shed any light what the problem is.

Forgot to mention previously his fecal sample was all ok.

He is still on AB and is still fine so we are going to wait and see what happens when he finishes the tablets

well the handsome one is determined that my stress levels are going to go up. He's walking oddly again. However it is not like before when he was walking on his belly. He has always walked with one rear foot pointing out slightly more than the other. That leg now he's walking as though he's perhaps pulled a muscle. Will be ringing vets in morning. It may only be a pulled muscle [and he was leaping around after a laser pen briefly the other night] but anything to do with him being not quite right gives me the jitters.

thanks very much for the vibes!

well I didn't ring vets as I thought he was better this morning. Got home tonight and he seems a bit worse. Its been a couple of days now so would have thought a pulled muscle would have resolved itself? Have got appointment with Kate for Monday. He is still on his antibiotics. I'm not really sure what I think now. Whether this is part of the same problem as his earlier walking problem or something different, so he's a real worry.

Title: Re: Vibes for Karlo please - having a biopsy this week
Post by: cazzer on July 03, 2011, 14:01:07 PM
well poor Karlo has got worse. He is walking crouched down but not yet on his belly. He is back on the vetergesic. I think it is the same problem as before just that the speed of it it happening has been slowed down by the AB's. He will be having a biopsy one day this week and then will be transferred to vet hospital for a few days recovery as it such a major op. The op will be later in the week though as we are meant to be going to a festival on Friday. I would not of gone if he had come back home so they are going to keep him for a extra day or so, and we can then pick him up on Monday. Vet weighed him today and he was 4.5kg in May and he is now 4.7kg so that is a good sign that he has put on weight. Poor little soul, I feel so sorry for him.

Title: Re: Vibes for Karlo please
Post by: cazzer on July 03, 2011, 17:47:37 PM
thanks both of you.     I have to be optimistic that its not going to be anything sinister as he seems so well [apart from his sore belly] and has put on lots of weight since April.     However the op itself scares me and the fact that the stress of the op could cause the coronavirus to mutate into FIP.      Helen the vet I spoke to today said that she and Kate [his usual vet] usually do the biopsies together and have never had a problem so just have to hope that this is the same for Karlo
Title: Re: Vibes for Karlo please

Title: Re: Vibes for Karlo please
Post by: cazzer on July 03, 2011, 19:09:14 PM
to be honest Gill I've not asked too many questions about the biopsy as yet, as have not wanted to scare myself as to what it entails, in case he didn't have to have it done.    I shall have to ask Kate tomorrow though as it seems there is no avoiding it now.  I'm also going to ask for a referral to Langford vet school.

Title: Re: Vibes for Karlo please
Post by: cazzer on July 05, 2011, 18:00:17 PM
Thanks for thinking of him.      he's booked in tomorrow for scan and xray and possible biopsy.         If the scan shows that his lymph nodes are still enlarged then he will have a biopsy.     Its possible that the lymph nodes won't be enlarged as the first time it happened he had a high temperature as well but hasn't since.      He's never had his hips xrayed [only the front legs] and given the problem this time started slowly over a number of days with the rear leg that sticks out slightly Kate wants to get that checked.     {Previously we had woken up and he couldn't walk but fine when we went to bed the previous night, so it happened very quickly}     I'm worried sick over the biopsy.       There is also an inheirited disease that only wegies get that affects their walking and is similar to muscular dystrophy.      He would be about the right age to get it as well as it is from 5 months onwards.      Its also fatal.    I'm worried sick about that as well.

The little monkey does seem to be walking a bit better tonight I am pleased say.

well Karlo is back briefly from the vet.       The xray found that he has mild hip dysplasia, but nothing that would cause the problem that he is having walking.        The scan showed that that his lymph nodes are still enlarged.      So the poor boy is going back tomorrow for a biopsy of his abdomen, pancreas and lymph nodes.        Helen said that she doesn't think that it is the wegie disease as it would have started about 5 months and by eight months the muscles are pretty bad.    He is 11 months old now.     However they are still saying that it could be FIP  :'(.      Its possible that he has two problems going on rather than the just one that we originally thought.     Tonight he is walking fine.         He's had a whole tin of almo nature to himself, poor little soul

I am scared silly over this op

Got the result of the biopsy today and the handsome one doesn't have FIP!!!      :wow:

What he actually does have is IBD [my third cat with IBD along with Sassie and Oska my elderly persians!!!].     So now have problem as he is only a baby of trying to track down the cause of it of which there could be numerous, one of which could be diet.    We've agreed with Kate to let him recover from his op and let him carry on eating his normal food for a week or so.     We then are going to put him on a single source protein that he has never tried before to see what effect this has.       At moment the only ones I can think of are Hermann's horsemeat and Almo Nature trout [which is complementary].          Any one else got any ideas.       He normally eats Grau so all of those are out.

Am so happy!!!

Can't think of any tinned food at the moment other than the horsemeat, think most of the ones that contain more exotic meats are not single source.

yes you are right re exotic meats just had my first delivery from Germany today of food that we can't get in UK.     Some of that has ostrich but its not a single source and he has already had the other protein.

Excellent! glad to hear some good news  ;D

What about rabbit? although he's probably eaten that at some point before, its in a few cat foods. If he hasnt had it you could try Woldsway http://www.woldsway.co.uk/acatalog/Pet_Meat.html It might be worth trying raw with him anyway, it can be a real help for cats with IBD - this site has lots of good info and is written by a cat owner whose cat had IBD and she changed him over to raw http://www.catnutrition.org/

Thanks Gillian, yes he's had rabbit.     And lamb, and duck.   Don't think he's had venison [is it the same as reindeer as he's had that?]     Zooplus don't seem to sell the horsemeat anymore but they do kangaroo, ostrich, buffalo, goose and venison that are single source.      The last two seem to have some fruit with it though .       Re the raw he won't touch it as the other wegies have some everyday but he won't touch it.     This is where I suffer for feeding him so well as I think I shall to go down the exotic route!     Everything is grain free as well so can't pin the blame on that!

Thanks everyone.      On looking further it seemed that the kangaroo etc wasn't a single source.      however I found the horsemeat on zooplus.com rather than zooplus.uk so have ordered from there.       I've also found a single source venison from Floyds in Germany which I'll get if need be.      On reflection I don't think he has ever tried reindeer as the bozita reindeer I'm sure I bought for Kalle and Kyrre when they were kittens and no one would touch it so I never ordered again.

grrr well Zooplus cancelled my order of horsemeat yesterday due to moving their warehouse and being out of stock of lots of things.     I quickly ordered Grau beef which he was on whilst I was waiting for the horsemeat to turn up.        I'm going to run out of that today though so he will be going onto grau lamb.        He and the others love the beef so I hope the lamb will be as popular.   But again I don't have a huge stock of that and will have to go to the next variety I have in the cupboard.       {Don't have a huge amount of Grau in the cupboard and it is the only singel source protein I have}.     Meanwhile there is about three cupboards of food that he can't have as vet doesn't him to have a mixture of proteins.     I'm trying to feed this to the others whilst I'm at home but this isn't possible when I'm at work.

Meanwhile the little man is still ok.      So he was last poorly the beginning of June

thanks for asking.      He has been fine  :naughty:.         He has been on Grau beef for a while now.      However took him to vet tonight and it seems he is a little loose so may have to think again though.      So going to order some Grau lamb just in case.

That's good to hear  :) Do you have him on probiotics?

Riley went through a runny bum stage that *touch wood* has cleared up but I daren't take him off the probiotics just in case!

Hi no I don't have him on probiotics at moment.   I have used fortiflora in the past with Oska and Sassie my brother and sister persians both with IBD and found that all of the cats including Karlo loved that.        What probiotic do you use?

Initially I was using Lacto-B but when I went to re-order I couldn't get hold of the tub (only the sachets) so googled and came across 'Blooming Pets probiotics'. The Lacto-B was around £15 for a 75g tub whereas this comes in a 350g tub and was £12 delivered from a pet powerseller on ebay. Riley was 'fixed' when I switched from lacto-b to this one so can't say for certain how effective it is as have been using it for maintenance but *touch wood* he's OK still.

thanks for that.    They really love the fortiflora but that only seems to come in sachets as well and is therefore expensive at £22 for about 30 sachets.      I swear the non IBD cats know when I sprinkle it on food and muscle their way to the front of the IBD cats to get to it!   Nothing seems to have developed at Karlo's rear end so hoping it won't!
