Title: How Catweazle got his name
Post by: Jiskefet on April 26, 2011, 14:29:49 PM
Catweazle was called Joris (Dutch for George) at the cat shelter. When I came looking for a cat, in May 2003, I fell for Jiskefet straight away. This was not to Joris’ liking. Apparently he had taken a shine to me, and he took great pains to get noticed. He gave me what we came to call his Catweazle-look.

For those of you who are not familiar with Catweazle:
He was the main character in a 1970s tv series, a medieval magician transported into the present, and he had an extremely haunting, mesmerizing way of staring at people.

Well, you guessed it, we adopted joris, too, and renamed him Catweazle, and to the day Jiskefet died, the two toms were inseparable.

Catweazle the wizard had a toad named Touchwood, and Catweazle the cat loves catching toads and frogs. He once ingested the neurotoxin of a toad he caught, and we had to take him to the vet. No harm done, but he was as high as a kite, eyes wide and a bit giddy....

So now we know why he loves catching him, he is a toad addict...

Unfortunately the wordplay doesn't translate into English...

In Dutch, a toad is a 'pad', and mushrooms are paddestoelen (toad stools)
Hallucinative mushrooms are commonly known as 'paddos', so whenever Catweazle is acting up, nowadays, we always say: has he been on the 'paddos' again???
