Karlo my eight month old wegie is having difficulty walking. He seems to be ok on the back legs but is having difficulty with his front. He is crouching down at the front so he is walking similar to a cat whose is about to pounce all the time. He doesn't appear to be in pain and doesn't appear to have any swelling. I'm getting panicky [too much reading of internet sites perhaps?] that he has FIP. Both he and his sister have recently had diarrhoea. We had a fecal sample from Kaisa tested and it had campyrobacter. We didn't have Karlo's done though. Both kitten's diarrhoea has cleared up now. The vet did say that he had a lot of gas in his abdomen when she saw him a couple of weeks ago. She said that what one had the other was likely to have hence we didn't get his sample done. He's going to the vets tomorrow. In the meantime I'm worrying myself silly over my little lad.
-
Sending best wishes for Karlo and hope there is an easy answer
-
thanks Gill. I'm trying to convince myself that he isn't lethargic off food etc. Already lost one cat to FIP Omar, Sassie and Oska's brother years ago and don't want to lose another. Hopefully its just me being a worrywort [depression seems to make me see the worst case scenario with the cats]. I've lost count of the times I've thought i've posioned them, house sitter let one escaped etc!
-
Really hope it's nothing untoward  Gillian's Gwynnie had something similar a few years ago but went on to make a full recovery.
Esier said than done but try not to worry and let us know how he gets on at the vets
-
Good Luck at the vets with Karlo, hope it isnt anything serious
-
thank you. He's no better this morning. Our appointment at vet is 10.00. I'm in tears as I'm typing this. I don't normally get so upset over them. I worry yes but don't get like this.
-
I hope everything went OK
-
thanks for asking after him
We've had to take him to the vet hospital, and only just back. The vet made him flex his back and legs and all seemed ok. Didn't appear to be any neurological problems or any pain when this was done. However he was the most wriggly cat I've ever seen when she was touching his abdomen, so she believes the problem is there. She gave him a shot of vetergesic to hopefully make him feel more comfy. The plan is for blood tests, scan and x-ray as necessary at the hospital. She said she thinks it is very unlikely that is FIP but she she said she wouldn't rule it out as a possibility either.
-
Pleased they are going to fully check him out and hope they find the cause and its not serious
-
Am pleased to hear that FIP is very unlikely, hope the tests can get to the bottom of it and that he goes on to make a full recovery
-
thanks both I'm glad that some people on here are thinking about him. Find it very touching that you can be asking about him Gill when you are having such a difficult time youself.
-
Get them to test for Toxoplasmosis as it shares some of the same signs as FIP also Campobylactor can throw some of the symptoms to
Hope he is a bit happier with his injection
-
thanks Liz actually he and his sister both had a bout of diarrhoea a couple of weeks ago. It did clear up for both of them with meds. A fecal sample was taken from his sister and I was told on Thursday it tested positive for campyrobacter.
I'll ask about toxoplasmosis later if it isn't mentioned
-
Have spoken to the vet and she said that Karlo's blood results are normal with the exception of calcium and albumen which are both slightly raised but at the high end of normal. Due to the pain relief she had a better feel of his abdomen than the vet at my branch and says the pain is at the front of the abdomen, rather than everywhere which it seemed at my branch. She seems to think that it is pancreatis but she says due to bank holiday and only one place in the country testing for it she is going to have to wait to send off the sample. She is therefore going to treat him as though this is what he has got. She will reassess later and if he is still in pain then look at the scan and xray. Apparently he is being his normal cuddle bug self and was really laid back even watching them take his blood sample! Probably won't hear anymore now until tomorrow.
Feeling a lot happier now
-
I didn't realise they'd kept him in, hope he can come home soon  When Riley stayed in overnight it was horrible without him :( Hope your other cats give you extra snuggles to try and make up for you missing him
-
Sending lots of  your way Hun and lots of love, huggles and healing vibes for little Karlo - really hoping he makes full and speedy recovery xxx
-
thanks both. Hopefully the vet is right it is pancreatis [which I accept can be very serious] the pain will have gone down and he'll be allowed home tomorrow. If it hasn't not and he needs the scan etc the worry is that the little beggar has swallowed something he shouldn't have and may need surgery. I do have to remember not to leave paperclips and elastic bands lying around when working at home as most of the wegies will play with them given half a chance. Just as well I went grey years ago!
-
Hope that what ever he has can be cured and I understand so much about one being away..........its so ridiculasly quiet here.........sendong loads mopre goos wishes
-
well I spoke to another vet this morning who was of the opinion that his abdomen was ok. He said they would wait for the pain relief to wear off and if he was still ok in the abdomen he could come home.
However, just spoken to the vet who I spoke to yesterday and she says now the pain relief has worn off he is very uncomfortable again. She is therefore going to do the scan/xray to eliminate foreign bodies etc. Apparently he is still being a complete tart and wanting belly rubs. My poor little man :'(
-
Hope he will be ok and its something treatable, such a worry though  With my Gwynnie, it was her back legs, she started limping on one, then almost overnight she'd lost the use of both back legs - but slowly regained use - and you've seen what a strapping girl she is now! ;)
-
Keeping fingers crossed they can find out what the problem is
-
Sending healing vibes to little Karlo, hope they can find out what's wrong with him and get him on the mend and home ASAP
-
well my little man is still at the vet hospital. Yesterday they did a scan/xray and found nothing untoward that they could see. However they couldn't do his pancreas as it was so full of gas. They are going to try again today hoping that the gas has moved along a bit. So they do think it is pancreatis which is a worry as it can reoccur and also can be extremly serious. Hoping he can come home today
-
I hope they can relieve the gas cos sure that very painful and hope he can come home today
-
Sending healing vibes to little Karlo :care: :get well:
-
Thanks both
Just had an update from the vet. His temperature has gone up despite being on AB. They managed to do a scan and found that his lymph glands in his pancreas are swollen. They have taken a urine sample to rule out a kidney infection. He has been tested for feline leukemia and is negative. They have also done the test for FIP, at which point I was beginning to get really upset but the vet said this is more to rule it out. She says depending on what the results are they may have to do a biopsy.
I'm so worried about my little man. I know the vet said they want to rule out FIP but I am so worried it is that. I can't stop crying
-
I am sure it wont be FIP but they do need to find out what it is and sounds like they are looking after him well.
Sending lots of Get well vibes for Karlo, I knoiw hjow worring it is
-
Sorry to hear Karlo is poorly, it's awful waiting for test results, I hope he is soon on the mend and back home with you
-
Sorry to hear he's got a temperature  I'm sure, as the vet said, its just to rule out FIP - but there is no specific test for FIP itself - it will just be a test to see if there are antibodies to coronavirus (the virus that can, in some cases, cause FIP). Even if he is positive for coronavirus (and many cats carry the virus without any ill effects), it still doesnt automatically mean FIP though. I had all this with Gwynnie, they were always moving towards a diagnosis of FIP because she had high coronavirus titres and because of the absence of another diagnosis, but she didnt develop FIP.
-
Thanks all
We did lose a cat years ago to FIP Omar can't remember how many other cats in the house we had at the time but at least six and all of those were ok, so was aware how it works. I know logically it is unlikely to be FIP but I think because we went through it with Omar and also because I suffer from severe depression and cry over nothing, when there is possibly something wrong I always look on the black side.
-
I know it really is easier said than done but please try not to think the worst, Karlo is young and fit so is best placed to fight off whatever is wrong with him
-

-
Only just catching up with this, poor boy I do hope that they sort out the problem soon sending get well wishes and gentle hugs
-
Any news today on little Karlo?
-
Thanks for asking about him. Well spoke to another vet today. Little man is still at the hospital charming all he meets, and is still eating etc. She said that his temperature had come down briefly only to go back up. The lymph nodes in his pancreas are still swollen. They were still waiting for test results to come, some of them may come back today but FIP will be tomorrow they think. I got the feeling she was a bit more negative about it not being FIP, so I pressed her about it a bit more and she says if he has it it will be the dry version. Its just a waiting game at the moment and although I'm ok at moment I keep on getting upset.
Meanwhile his sister looks like she is getting diarrhoea again, so she is going back to see our vet tomorrow.
-
Sending lots more good vibes
-
Thanks very much
Update: we've just brought him back home!!!!! His temperature has come down and he doesn't seem as uncomfortable in his abdomen. We've not had the result of the FIP back yet [it will be Friday apparently] but the vet is still saying that she thinks it isn't FIP. He is walking ok as well. We've got to try and get a fecal sample from him. He is booked in at our normal vets tomorrow and Saturday to make sure his temperature is still ok. He went into cuddle/purr overdrive on the way back home and went straight to the food bowl when he got back. Sadly the others gave him a bit of hard time as he obviously smells a bit strange. But things are back to normal now. We've got loads of meds for him to take as well. He seems a lot happier generally than he had been for a few days prior to his going to the vets.
feeling a lot more positive about my liger tiger
-
Sounds good and hope he just gets better and better
-
I'm glad you've got your man home :)
Sending get well thoughts for him.
I share your pain with the worrying,it's horrible going through this isn't it
-
Yay, welcome home Karlo :care:
Fingers crossed for the results on Friday, pleased he seems better in himself :)
-
Glad to hear Karlo is back home and feeling much better, hope his temperature stays steady and the results on Friday are ok
-
How's he been doing over the weekend Cazzer? Did you get the results on Friday?
-
Hi thanks for asking no we didn't get the result on Friday and are still waiting. His temperature was still slightly on the high side of normal on Saturday so he has an extended course of AB. We have to take him back down on Friday. He seems totally back to normal now which is a huge relief!
-
So pleased he is doing so well
-
Hope Karlo is continuing to do well
-
Glad he seems to be back to his old self, let us know when you hear back about the tests
-
Glad to hear he's back to normal  fingers crossed for the test results.
-
Thanks everyone. Well just back from vet's Karlo's temperature was normal and he has put on lots of weight. He still is extremely bright, playful etc. He was still quite wriggly when Kate was feeling his abdomen though. How much of this was due to discomfort and how much was due to him wanting belly rubs was not clear! Asa he was desperate for cuddles.
However his coronavirus titres were high [1000]. Vet still doesn't think is FIP as he seems so well., and she said she wouldn't of expected him to respond so well to the medication. However she said as a disease it ebbs and flows. She also said that it is more common in situations like mine, pedigree, multicat and young cats so it could still be. They are going to scan his abdomen on Monday to see what the lymph nodes are like.
-
Its so hard to know whats going on isnt it? I so wish Franta could tell me how he feels and bet you wish the same for Karlo
Sending lots of cuddles and good wishes to Karlo
-
thanks Gill. I wasn't really expecting this as he seems so well. Will be worrying constantly about my little man now
-
Fingers crossed for Monday, what a worry

Try not to worry, (easier said I know  ). Gwynnie's titres were 2,500 and my vet said exactly the same about it being more common in young pedigrees and multicat etc etc - it seemed almost a given that she had FIP - but that was nearly 4 yrs ago. She also responded well to the meds and has been fine ever since.
-
Thanks both, I'm not worrying as much as I thought I would. I'm hoping he's going to follow lovely Gwynnie's example. He's still bright as a button and eating for England!
-
That last statement is really good cos he cant be feeling ill and I think is very positive
-
feel absolutely devastated. Took karlo for his scan and his lymph nodes are still swollen. Kate did a fine needle aspirate [correct sp????} and will get the result back in a couple of days. Depending on the result may then need to do a biopsy. He still seems incredibly well and he came back and demanded food and cuddles in no real order. He has yet more AB's. I was in tears at vets I keep on coming back to FIP. Trying so hard to be positive but finding it so hard.
-
Sorry to hear the news is not as good as hoped for, but try and hold on to the positive fact that he is well in himself
-
I know its hard to think of anything else other than FIP - in the light of the raised titres, but don't foreget, if he's fighting coronavirus I expect his lymph nodes probably would still be swollen. The fact that he still seems well, is eating and is happy in himself is a huge positive I'd say.
-
I am sending loads more positive vibes for Karlo and I am sure he would be much iller by now if it was FIP
-
thanks you all for your thoughts. Have been trying to take my mind off of it by building their out door assault course. (They are getting an outdoor run tomorrow, so will be allowed out for the first time). Ginger will be the first cat over the threshold. Followed by Kyrre [as he is a pain in the bum and wants to be outside]. I suspect Karlo will be the next! I just hope they like it!
yes that it what I am telling myself Gill, but I know when we had Omar our cat with FIP his symptoms would come and go. I feel really bad now as when Karlo first came I kept on calling him Omar, and we lost Omar probably 10 years ago.
-
That run sounds like fun and am sure Karlo and the others will love it. Try and stay positive and enjoy Karlo
-
The run and assault course sound great, I am sure all the cats will enjoy it.
-
Gill you can't but enjoy Karlo, if you could put sunshine into a cat that would be Karlo. He is the colour of gold and has the happiest disposition of any cat. I just see him and break out into a smile. He sees me and collapses at my feet wanting belly rubs [assuming he isn't wanting his food!].
-
Try to stay positive  Have everything crossed for the results still  Karlo sounds like a special boy, would love to see some pics of them all enjoying the assault course when it's unveiled :)
-
Just spoken to Kate and she has had the result from the aspirate which came back negative. There was no signs of granulomas {sp???}, it just confirmed that the nodes were swollen. We've agreed as he is still so well that once the ABs are finished that we will just see what happens. If he then becomes ill then we may consider doing a biopsy. Feel that there is no point going down that route at the moment.
Will try and get some pics of the run over the weekend
Thanks for everyone's support.
-
That's good news isn't it? If he's well in himself and not showing any signs of being poorly then the high levels could just be 'one of those things' and unexplainable?
-
This sounds very good and hope it continues for a very very long time
-
Thanks both, yes I'm taking it as good news even though his lymph nodes were still enlarged. It may go all horribly wrong still, but I'm not worrying about him at moment as he is so well and enjoying life. I think tears at vet's earlier in week was caused by PMT, as always get hit by tears/depression at such time, and started period today. He has been out in the run a couple of times and probably out of all of the cats seems to enjoy it the most, and loves the assualt course!.
-
I am glad it is good news and that you have decided not to worry :)
-
How's Karlo been doing over the last few days? Hope he's OK
-
thanks for asking. He has been off the antibiotics for a few days now. He's discovered bouncy balls and keeps on wanting to play with them so keeps on sitting by them in the hope i'll play with him! He's eating loads and I'm sure he has had a bit of a growth spurt since he's been home, so I think he is doing just fine at the moment!
-
That is brilliant news, so glad that Karlo is doing so well xxx
-
Great news ;D
-
;D so pleased to hear this news.
-
Very good news indeed :) Still waiting on those pics of the handsome boy ;)
