Title: Am I Being Cruel? (Hungry cat)
Post by: isabel on April 22, 2007, 11:49:44 AM
Hi, it's been a wee while since I posted!

I stayed in a flat with my cat Jess and she ate hi life petit pate. It was a bit dear, but it was all she would eat.
For about a month now, I've been staying with family and they've been buying her Select, which is dearer than the Hi life!
I'm going back to the flat soon and simply cannot afford to buy her Select.

She now won't eat the hi life, or whiskas or any of several brands I've tried.
I took the hard line and didn't offer her anything else. This is day number 2 that she hasn't eaten anything.

Should I just buy her a tin of Select so she doesn't starve herself? What do I do? I've tried mixing foods before, but she seems to know that her precious Select is contaminated with hi life!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have to admit when Amber turned her nose up at cat tuna this week because it wasnt coley fish I went straight back on felix and thats all they've been offered since as coley or tuna flakes arent complete foods.
Im not sure what to suggest but think I would go along the route you are with only feeding what you want her to eat.
Good luck
love

I wouldnt' leave it any longer - two days of not eating is the maximum I would leave a cat (well, actually it is one day in this house), 3 days and longer you are risking her health. What is select by the way. I have never heard of it? I haven't found a cat that would resist HiLifes Tuna and Salmon pouches yet, might be worth a go, or mixing hte select with HiLife.

ive not ever seen a cat that refuses high life either lol my cats go crazy for it lol

Neither would I. I would offer her once again what I know she likes and then if she wont eat that perhaps a vet check tomorrow would be prudent

She still has her dry food to nibble on. She's grumpy, but she's not starving completely. Select is something I've only seen in Sainsburys and it's 50% meat.
It costs 50p for a tiny tin as opposed to 30p for a tiny tin of hi life.
I'll offer some select today. She won't eat it if i mix even a teaspoon of other cat food in with it.

I just don't understand because she used to love her hi life! and when I got her she was on whiskas (adult despite being a kitten, not impressed!). She would only ever eat tuna hi life, none of the other flavours. I asked her vet about her eating only tuna and she told me not to worry and it probably explained why she had such a shiney coat.

jasper will only eat fish too.  he is unbelievably shiny for it!!
its not thats she's off her food is it? just refusing to eat the 'common' high life? cheeky thing.
hope she sorts herself out shortly and starts eating what she's being given. i see why you wouldnt want to be forking out 50p a tin. it does get a bit silly then.

xx

Im lucky as all of my cats will eat everything ,they dont turn there noses up at anything ,they bloody greedy and will eat like theres no tommorow ,
it must be awkward having a fussy cat who will only eat a certain flavour and a certain brand

I am glad she has got some dry food, makes it slightly less urgent, but I would still give in after 2 days.

Oh! that changes the ball game a little, but please make sure it is a complete food and not a complementary food.

Natures menu would work out cheaper than select, may be worth trying her on that, PAH sell individual pouches i think

 :luck:

My cats wont eat much else except Gourmet pearl and with having to buy 8 boxes a week at £4.28 its quite expensive. They just turn their noses up at everything else. And this has been going on for years!

My Kocka was the same she would starve gherself to death unless she got the food she wanted.

I would feed her with Select, never heard of it either LOL.

I know how you feel.  Sometimes when they get a taste for the good stuff, they just dont want to go back to the regular (and cheaper) food.

I recently tried Sam with Felix AGAIL and he loved it.  Previously he was only slightly fussy, he would eat Felix but only chunks in jelly (no whiskas or store brand).  Well now, he only wants the AGAIL stuff and the normal Felix gets left in his bowl.  After a few days of tipping it into the bin, barely touched, I gave in and bought the more expensive stuff as it was on offer - 3 for 2 in PAH.  This is not that expensive admittedly, so I am happy to change it for him, if he is happier and he always cleans out his bowl.  I am just glad he is not a HI-Life addict, he does like it but I only give him one tin every now and again.

I used to have a cat that would only eat Natures Menu or Hi-Life.  Anything else and he had a bad tummy

Just a thought but have you tried sprinkling a few bits of her dry food on top of the "cheaper" wet food to see if she's tempted.  It works with out Tom, bless him.

Sounds like you might have given in already to her demands and would have to start all over again tho  :(

My mum spoke to customer service at Purina a while ago - she was moaning about the price increase on Gourmet Pearl in Asda
They told her that AGAIL is made from the same meat strips as gourmet pearl and is vdery similar - might be worth trying.

my cody still will only lick all wet food and not really eat it well, except for his little hi life petit pate tins where normally he does eat a good protion of one.  He wont even eat the little expensive tins with real chicken in them..infact he doesnt care for cooked meats at all.  give him a raw chicken fillet tho and thats a whole different story.
