Edited: Do not go on the Coventry Cat Group website - it has been hacked and the site can crash your computer!
Brings up what looks like a hackers message :'(
I was on it earlier on.... strange isnt it? going to PM Angie
[if you think you have got spyware now from clicking, www.download.com - you can download ad aware (free version) and it will get rid.. ]
-
DO NOT CLICK THE LINK!!!!! I just clicked it and it opened thousands of pages and then crashed my pc.
-
Did you pm angie Cheese?
This very nasty.
-
Oh sorry!!! :(
I had my popup blocker on, it told me it blocked something but I thought that was the 'dot tk' advert box that pops up on the first CCG loading page...
So sorry :'( :'( It was taking a while to load the "hacker" page but I didnt realise that was probably because my popup blocker was working overdrive.
I can take a screen shot??

Yes Gill, straight after I posted this.
So gutted for them - who does things like this to charity websites? :censored:
-
I guess this page needs to be given a wide berth until its sorted, I certainly wont be clicking on it :scared:
-
That's ok don't worry I just thought I'd warn other people about it. Run a virus and spyware check on your pc now as well as my pc has now started auto virus checking itself (which it does if it suspects an issue) after I managed to get the pc to switch on again.
-
I feel really bad now - just thought i'd give everyone a heads up and I sort of wanted to check it wasnt just me that got the message.
Reaaally didnt know about the popups!
-
Don't feel bad it's not your fault. Just don't want anyone else to get pc probs so thought I'd put in big bold writing not to click the link. Can't believe someone would do that to a cat charity website (or any charity website in fact).

Scanning now - laptop is only a month old so I bloody hope not! :shify:

You might be ok because of the pop up blockers. Mine's just found loads of spyware it didn't have yesterday, eek! Not sure what spyware is but it doesn't sound good.

It can detect your entered passwords, sites you have looked at, etc and send them to the hacker - if it has just put them on and you are getting rid you will be okay :) I am guessing you have software to get rid? If so, I edited my first post to include free spyware program info
-
Eek will go and change my websites passwords now so my website doesn't get hacked.
-
Have just posted a warning on Angies post in Rescues, hope she will see all this and your PM.
Thanks for telling us.

Anyone using the Internet should have protection against spyware as well as viruses. I think everyone now knows what viruses are but spyware can be relatively benign (tracking sites you have visited to advise advertisers) or really VERY dangerous, logging your keystrokes and collecting your passwords, credit card details, bank account info etc
There's a good anti-spyware kit called Spysweeper and their website is very clear and informative. Others may be able to recommend other solutions too.
Let's be careful up here

AVG is very good, i struggled for ages trying to get rid of a trojan and this zapped it for me :)
Everyone should also have a decent firewall, dont rely on the one that comes with windows XP, its tripe, turn it off and get something like Zonealarm, its free!
-
spoke to the website guy and he says our site is ok but there may ba a problem with the .tk host site. I normally go through on the long link attached to my userid as the main covcats.tk site has never loaded on my pc.
-
my virus protection thingy needs to be updated (i was grippy)
are there any decent free ones or do i have to fork out ?

Not a thing to be grippy about, this one Lynn. The cost of failure is high, as they say. I'd shell out for something like Norton - it's only a few pounds for the year. Make sure whatever you buy handles spyware as well as viruses or buy two solutions. I'll tell you what we use by PM, if you like (I'm superstitious about disclosing it on the Internet).
How's your head, by the way?
-
I've been recommended AVG too. I have norton internet security suite but my subscription has just expired and when I change to sky bband I get McAffee suite free so I don't want to pay to renew my subscription to norton, esp as I wont be online at home for a few weeks when changing isp. I think I'll sort that out tonight as it's only been a few days since mine expired but it is worrying me a bit.
-
I wouldnt touch Norton with a bargepole , it has too many conflicts and issues with other sites and also it was on my puter when it arrived and there is no unistall and all files are protected so cant get the flaming thing off and its just causing probs for my puter.
A bit like yahoo messenger which I uninstalled yesterday cos its a pain and although gone its left something behind that still delays me loggin on.
When they put stuff on then we ought to be able to get rid of it when we want grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

AVG is very good .... you can download if free from here: http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html

Can't say I've had any problems with Norton, Gill, and I've used it for years. Never tried to take it off though ;D Oh actually I have. It came with a temporary subscription for 3 months or something but I had a disc I'd bought on the internet with a full version of norton internet security so when the 3 months was up I removed it and installed the new version. At least I think I did!

I had AVG for years and it was excellent but I got an email a few months ago saying it is no longer free - If I remember right, they wanted £30 a year. I use the Mac now and I don't think it needs antivirus?

I know it changed a few months ago but I know you can still get a free version as we have it.
-
just downloading this agv thingy so its defo free. its the 7.5 version.
-
Maybe they had second thoughts when nobody wanted to pay for the personal version. I suppose as there are other free ones (like panda) why pay?
-
its currently been scanning my computer for past 31 mins and no thread found yet...not sure how long this process takes LOL
-
Did you clean up all your temporary Internet files first, Lynn?
