Title: Kaisa is calling and is due to be spayed tomorrow- do I cancel?
Post by: cazzer on February 27, 2011, 19:08:37 PM
Kaisa is 6 months old and is calling. She was originally booked in for Monday past and the vet wouldn't do it as she had a slight temperature. Nothing came of that and she is booked in tomorrow. Now my usual vet who neutered Karlo a couple of weeks ago said he wouldn't spay Kaisa if she was calling. He's been on holiday and I spoke to one of his colleagues about her on Friday as I thought she was beginning to call which she definately is now. She said she would spay her if she was in call as with cats its difficult to get a period when they are not.
She did say that she would give her a full check over before tomorrow and would not spay if they thought there was a problem

Just wondering what everyone thought really.

When I was doing a neutering campaign our local vets would not spay whilst a female was calling/in season. Something to do with increased blood supply in the uterus so can carry a greater a risk. Thats is wot I was told - the technical term being the uterus is more vascular.

I believe once they are in season, it generally can last 3-5 days and then will be repeated around every 3 weeks.

Millie was "calling" (not being noisy just acting tarty  :innocent: ) when she was spayed.  Vet said OK to go ahead although I did specifically ask if OK.

thanks both

I thought it was something like that Edd but wasn't a 100% sure.       She's having her second call the first one she was very noisy and was rolling around etc.

I think Kaisa is more like this, at the moment.     She does call occasionally but is rolling around a fair bit.      I also caught Kalle trying to mate her [all the boys are done!].

I would be honest about the symptoms and let the vet examine for any physical signs or give a 'diagnosis'. Different vets will be confident in different situations and rightly so IMO, any professional should work with his/ her strengths and his limitations.  :)

I think it's just a bit more complicated if they are in season.  Personally I would go ahead if the vet seemed confident and undertood the extra risk (ie was able to explain it to you and put your mind at rest that s/he understood the slight extra risk and didn't think it would be a problem) otherwise you might find it difficult to find a time when she's not in season, what with the weather warming up.  If it's the original vet doing the op and they aren't happy doing it, I wouldn't press for it to be done.

Tilly was spayed in season, I didn't actually know she was (she is pretty loud all the time) they told me when I picked her up she was only 5 1/2 months

hi both we took Kaisa to vets yesterday and explained situation.    It was the second vet there who decided to go ahead with the op.      She rang us after the op [which the vets don't normally do - normally get a vet nurse], to say she was in season but that all was ok.       Kaisa is fine if a little depressed [but only when her collar is on!].      She's not really showing any interest in her stitches so leaving collar off., only putting it on if she starts licking it.       she was jumping up onto ceiling scratch post earlier so think she is OK!

YOU ARE JOKING ?!!
I think I am right in saying that VN's are not allowed to do this

Glad it all went well  :) Special :care: to little Kaisa

I think cazzer meant the phone call to let you know how it went is normally made by vet nurses rather than the call being made by the vet that did the op!

yes that's right!     The vet did the op!      After which normally we would get a message from VN to say op went ahead & to say what time can go home etc.       On this occasion the vet called us instead of a VN as she knew we were concerned.

thanks both.     she has been as good as gold and not touched her stitches so we took her collar off her on Tuesday.    She ahd a check up last night and vet was pleased with her, but she was quite sore still.     When I picked her up to put her in carrier she cried out.      So she has been given some more pain killers.     She's been running up and down the ceiling scratch post today so I think she's ok
