Title: male neutering
Post by: hevern on January 29, 2011, 23:37:32 PM
hi im jan, i have a female silver and white tabby jonesy, she will be two in april, and i have mikey an all black male kitten who is five and a half months old.

Jonesy is neutered and as i have always had female cats i just wondered when mikey will become sexually mature.  I have read a lot of conflicting opions on this and am getting a bit confused.  Im registered with the PDSA and as they have a waiting list i cant get him done till the end of april when he will be eight and a half months old.

I have read that male cats can get aggresive, change in body shape and of course, the foul smelling urine.  so is this going to happen before eight and a half months,  Im thinking that it could cause problems as they share a litter box, so will jonesy not be put off the litter tray if she thinks the smell is different, and also will their play turn into serious fights as his hormone levels rise?  If this was to happen it could cause jonesy stress and bring on seizures as she has epilpepsy.   any help would be appreciated.    jan

Hopefully you are planning to keep Mikey in until he is neutered?

Can you explain why PDSA of all people are delaying neutering until he is 8 1/2 months old     I'm gobsmacked!  Is there any possibility of getting a voucher from Cats Protection and getting op earlier at a local vet?

I'm pretty sure hormones produce the not so nice odour of male cat pee and those kick in before 8 months

thanks rosella, yes mikey is with me for life, i wanted jonesy to have a friend, i think its best to have two cats, i love watching them running around the house and they have become really good mates, mikey has been with me since he was eight weeks and jonesy accepted him after only a couple of days (some hissing and a bit of a huff!).  After that they started playing together and even sleeping in the same bed!

The PDSA said they have such a big waiting list that end of april is their earliest appointment.  I called a private vet last week and they said it would cost £46, which is a lot cheaper than i thought it would be, so im just going to take him down and get him done there i think.

Definately get him done as soon as a vet says he is old enough and as Rosella says ring your local Cp branch or CP HQ to get a neutering voucher which you will be able to use at most vets.

I would think that Mikey is probably ready to be neutered now.

Jonesy is stunning  ;D  and Mikey  ;D

Yes you can get a CP voucher depending on your circumstances. Sometimes for part of the cost or even the full cost. There are 2 different vouchers. Also the RSPCA have mobile neutering clinic in some areas (we have them here in Kent) where the cost is £5.

thanks everyone for the replies, i looked up the cats protection website and there is a neutering campaign going on in glasgow at the moment, which means that specified vets will neuter cats for £5, so im going to ring one of the local ones that are involved in the scheme on monday.

No we dont have albums as such but if you go to the big block at the top above posts there is a wizzing block lol, go into fun and games and then galleries and you can post pics in there.

another way is to go to Our cats stories and post in there.

Or of course just go into general cay chatting and post there  ;D ;D

Any probs  let me know

YIKES!!  Just phoned a local vet regarding the neutering scheme, and they said they can do him tomorrow morning at 9 o clock, wasnt expecting an appointment so soon,  i am totally bricking it now!  He is only five and a half months, will he be alrite?  I got him a special comfy doughnut stlye coller, that you can inflate, dont want him to have one of the big cones round his head, jonesy hated that thing.  My poor wee guy, im going to be worried sick all night now.

For most male cats they come home running around and he wont need a collar  ;D ;D

Its only the poor ladees who suffer a bit.....typical!

Good luck for tomorrow and he will miss his food tonight  :innocent:

Awww he will be fine ....
and as Gill says he probably wont need a collar. Boys don't even have stitches, the incision is so tiny you won't see it.
The whole thing takes about 5mins to do !!

oh thats a relief about the collar, thought he would have stitches, i have had cats for over thirty years but all females, so im in new territory here with mikey, still worrying about anaesthetic and all the usual things, i just freak when i know they are getting surgery, i always get really tearful, im such a sap, he he

Our kitten Monty was done a week ago at just over 5 months and you would not even know he had anything at all done. He was eating and running around as normal in the evening after the op and didn't seem to notice a thing!. I couldn't even see a wound but the testicles are only about the size of peas and the make a tiny incision to do the op. I think they used some tissue glue as no stitches. He will be fine and best get it over with and save you the worry of him starting spraying etc.
Monty's sister Callie was also done but even she only had two stitches and though it took her a little longer to perk up she is right as rain now :)
Good luck for tommorrow Mikey :)

thanks souffle, im sure he will be fine, glad your little monty is okay, my first cat i got when i was twelve was called monty, she was a lovely tortiseshell and she lived till she was 22.

when i got jonesy done last year she had some stitches but even though she had a collar on she still managed to get it off and pull out the stitches, it took her about three days before she was back to normal.  Mostly because of the cone i think though cos she was having problems eating and goin to toilet with it on and she was also walking backwards!.  After i took it off she didnt look so depressed.

Lovely video.  He's got a very sweet meow  :Luv2: and such a jet black shiny coat  :Luv: :Luv:

Glad Mikey's "snip" went well.  Our Groucho had his op at only 4 months (he's a big lad) and acted like nothing had happened when he got home although he was ravenous.
