Title: Ginger is poorly
Post by: cazzer on January 26, 2011, 21:19:13 PM
Over the weekend  he was reluctant to walk on his left front leg.     This then cleared up and when we returned on Monday he seemed a bit quiet.     Took him to the vet who found he had a really high temperature and thought he may have been bitten although he could find no evidence of a bite.       Vet was really glad we took him as he has a severe heart murmur and the infection could have made his heart murmur worse.          He was prescribed antibiotics and seemed to get better but tonight he is again really quiet and not himself.     Another trip to the vets tomorrow  :(

thanks everyone.

Decided to day day off today from work and get him to vets early, and glad that I did.     Just back from the vet his temperature was actually higher than on Monday despite the antibiotics.       Vet thinks he has septacemia in the heart valves  :(.       He was given a shot of metacam to bring the temperature down and then he is on that for at least four days as well as antibiotics.      Hopefully its been caught in time.

thanks everyone, he seems a bit brighter this evening, even made a half hearted attempt to hide in a cardboard box that had a delivery in [he loves boxes just like Maru!].     His appetite has picked up a bit as well.     Vet did his bloods and they came back as normal which is good as he's getting on a bit [don't know his age as we took him in as a stray].     Got to take him back on Monday.

Thanks everyone well the Ginger ninja is definitely back to his normal self.      He wasn't very happy this morning having his metacam but needs must for a few more days.     We are planning on going to our caravan tomorrow [on winter pitch until end March at Glastonbury].    So Ginger is going to come on a little trip to the country with us, rather than leave him at home with the cat sitter.

Ginger hasn't eaten since last night and seems quiet.     We're going to take him to vets, this morning.    He was also holding his paw up on his other front leg yesterday  :'(

Title: Re: Ginger is poorly - maybe lots more problems
Post by: cazzer on January 30, 2011, 14:02:42 PM
back from the vet's it seems poor Ginger may have a multitude of problems.     His temperature was high although not as high as Thurs.    There was a lot of fecal matter, some with blood, and he appears constipated.      She fears that he may have pancreatis.      Also along his back he was very sore.       They've admitted him and going to put him on a drip and give him more antibiotics etc.       They are going to do a blood test to see what his pancreas is doing.       They are concerend that they may have to get a xray of his back and scan of his pancreas, which is a problem due to his grade 4 heart murmur, she said they would sedate him rather than use anasthetic   :(    Poor chap

Thanks everyone it is much appreciated.     I'm very feeling very depressed about him at the moment.       Blaming myself for the fact he got bitten by another cat [I'd been keeping him in so it had to be one of the others that bit him].       Not heard anything from the vet yet but she promised she would phone me when she could.      Luckily although he had to go to the vet hospital rather than my branch, the vet who saw him comes from my branch so we know her quite well.     I always hate leaving them with an outknown vet.

thanks everyone.       Spoke to the vet last night he was comfortable, but refusing to eat which is so unlike him as he is a real piglet normally.       Will know more later

Ginger had a scan and an xray today.    I was worried sick given his heart murmur, but he came through the sedation ok.    Nothing untoward on his xray.       But something abnormal showed up on his scan.      Vet said it could be inflammation, infection or possibly cancer  :(.       She did a test [can't remember what it was called that takes a very small sample of cell] it may tell us what the problem is.      If it doesn't the only other alternative is a biopsy which we are not going to put him through obviously.     The vet also said that his heart murmur is worse and that he could have heart failure at any time.    He could also suffer from a blood clot.

He's back home with us and has eaten a bit of food.      We ought to get the result back of the pancreas test tomorrow and the other test on Thursday.      he was as good as gold at the vets and they all fell in love with him.       Overjoyed to have him home but not feeling very positive for the future

Ginger has fully recovered from his sedation [last night he was a bit spaced out] he is currently making up for lost time on the eating front and being his normal piggy self!      He is frothing at mouth though if we try to give him zantac  :(
