We Don't know what's wrong with her :(
Carol says she started going off her food on Sunday, but she just hasn't been herself since I got home ??
I was up at 3am this morning, and she was not in the bedroom nor in her bed, I came downstairs and she was
lying in the lobby, half on her scratch post base looking really down :( I petted her for a while and did manage
to get her to Purr, but that was at 3am, she did not come to her plate when i put her breakfast out, and even
the Dreamys were refused, she is still drinking but has not been in our company all day which is very unusual
wondering if she has maybe eaten something outside which is giving her an upset tummy ??
will be making an apointment with the vet tomorrow, just hope she is ok :scared:
-
We have all paws crossed here for Olivia and you both - Wispa is sending extra head rubs to as he is off to the vet tomorrow to
-
Hope Olivia will be ok Stuart and she starts eating properly soon

-
Hope Olivia is Ok Stuart
Looks like I will be at vet too cos Ducha is not right...........sigh
-
Thanks Guys, she wanted out this morning, but just sat there - none of her usual galavanting round the garden
she had 2 licks of her pate and that was it, maybe 7 bit's of kibble and still turning her nose up at the dreamies
will let you know how I get on today
sorry to hear about Ducha Gill, I'm sending vibes her way too
-
hope she is ok
-
Fingers crossed for her today. Is is possible she has a furball? - Alice goes off her food when she has one. I normally pick her some grass to make her throw up and she is usually OK after that.
-
:( Poor girl, I hope that the vet can give her something to help
-
Hope it's nothing untoward and she starts to feel better soon
:get well: Olivia :care:

Good luck at the vets, Stuart. :)
-
Olivia is now booked into the main veternary clinic tomorrow for full bloods to be done
the vet says she can feel a lump in the abdomen and that she has a slightly raised temperature
I really hope this does not turn out to be something more sinister :scared: :(
-
I do hope not too Stuart and am sending loads of good wishes for Olivia

Not good news :'(
Olivia has been diagnosed with a grade 3 heart murmur
and the kidneys are in the early stages of failure :'(
don't know the exact results of creatine readings yet
so at this moment, she is being put on a drip for 2 hours so they can sedate her
and get an xray to check the heart and see if there is a lump in her abdomin
news I didn't want to hear :'(
-
Oh Stuart :(
The heart murmur is something many many cats live with and the early stage kidney issues could be down to dehydration  Hope the X-ray brings more positive news
-
sending lots of  for you all
-
Thx Helen + Cazzer, I know so far, the results don't mean the end of the road
but this is just heart breaking, she's only 6 :'(

-
bless her she is so very beautiful. I do so love persians. My poorly middleaged mog Ginger has a grade 4 murmur for many years and until now hasn't had any problems from it
-
Stuart sending hugs for you all at this time
Our fluffy Phoenix has a stage 3 heart murmer and is on no medication and is now nearly 9, Jazz our JRT had the highest grade and we had diuretics and she lived for a good number of years at her own pace
We have all the Clans Paws crossed for this special little girls
-
Ohh Stuart, sorry to hear this. Hopefully all will be ok, My Tyler got diagnosed with heart murmour last year when she was 6.
Zoe
-
Hoping things won't be as bad as you fear.
-
Poor Olivia -hoping things are not too bad and she picks up after being on the drip.
My Smartie has an enlarged heart, Asthma, Herpes, and he has an Prednisolne(sp) tablet every day and a fortekur for his heart.
Sending healing vibes for the beautiful girl and loads of      for you too.
-
Thanks for the Vibes folks, look's like they may have worked ;)
the lumps in the abdomin turned out to be fecal matter
:censored: for getting me all worried n such >:(
just one thing peeved me off, the vet didn't come out when we collected Olivia
we did get a few answers off the nurse, but I thought the vet would have spoken to us ??
Me still coming out of nightshift mode didn't help either, should have asked to see vet
and another thing, we took Olivia out of the basket and she had poo sticking to her fur and
she had wet herself, you would have thought they could have at least taken the poop off >:(
trying to remember all that was said??
grade 3 heart murmur which has enlarged her liver, Kidneys in Very early stages of failure but
not Chronic, Potassium levels are normal, just the creatine slightly raised, there are no infections
in the blood and the white blood cells are normal too
although she is still groggy for anesthetic, she made a bee line for her food and has had some kibble
and water, will start the Fortekor tomorrow, which is going to be fun as her facial features arent going
to make giving tablets easy
just a matter of waiting now, just hope she picks up
-
So pleased she is not too bad
I would have been seething at the lack of a vet and also her condition.......sounds like they are not really that caring.
-
thats good news about Olivia. I would be pretty unhappy too about her condition. I would suggest putting the tablets into a piece of Webbox thats what we've been doing with our wegies and it works a dream. I think though the fortekor might be too big for this though even if you cut them in half. Good luck!
-
Glad to hear that Olivia is home with you Stu - wishing her a speedy recovery and  for you x

Exactly what I was going to suggest! and fortekor does fit in the piece of Webbox if its halved, I gave Sam his fortekor like this for a couple of years - he never knew he was being medicated! ;)
Stuart, I think the vet should have spoken to you too. I wouldnt have been happy either >:( Hope she goes on ok with the medication

Oh that made me laugh! What are they like! Hope the gorgeous Olivia feels better soon and you get over all that worry
-
Glad these was good news re the lumps - sounds like poor Olivia was constipated and probably dehydrated as a result. Not good about the condition of Olivia when you got her back or not being able to speak with the vet.
Will they send the results back to your usual vet so you can have a proper talk about them. Otherwise I would be tempted to ask the vet to telephone you or arrange to call in to speak with them. Would it be worth asking whether the constipation and dehydration that causes, had any effect on blood results?
Good luck with the Fortekor and hoping she continues to improve
-
I'm so glad the lump isnt bad, and hope she picks up with the medication
-
At our wonderful vets it is the vet nurses who discharge the animals unless you ask to see a vet, happens in most practices around here
I'm sure under yours and Carols wonderful care Miss Olivia will be just fine
-
So glad the lumps weren''t anything serious.
Poor Olivia , she sounds like she was in a mess when you got her home !
My vets onlu usually ask to see you after they have been there overnight if they need to talk to you about anything -i would have thought they would in this instance to explain everything !
Smartie has been on Fortekur for his heart for a good few years now and he takes it without any bother at all . He is doing fine too and coming up to 14 in May !
Sending lots of     to all of you , especially beautiful Olivia :Luv2: :Luv2:
-
I'm worried again :scared:
Olivia does not seem to have moved from where she lay when she came in yesterday ( 5pm )
she is just laying there on her side and does not want to move and is still very distant??
it's as tho she is still under the anesthetic ?? I thought this would be out of her system by now ??
Hamish and misty were usually ok by the next morning,
has anyone here experianced this kinda thing before?? should I phone the vet or give Olivia more time to recover ??
-
If in doubt give your vet a call Stuart, I do hope that Olivia starts to pick up today, poor girl
-
please don't worry too much about the heart thing Stuart, our old boy bluto had one from the age of 5 and lived to be 14 1/2 and died of something unrelated
with anything medical human or animal never be afraid to ask questions - phone the vet
-
I would phone the vet to check to put everyones mind at rest
-
Hope she's perked up a bit by now but if not then I'd give the vets a quick ring
-
got an appointment at the vets at 2:20
Olivia in my view has gotten worse, she is so out of it as tho she was still under anesthetic??
( her eyes are still dilated ?? )
she was actually more lively last night when we first took her home..
When I came in just now I shouted to her, and her ears pricked up, but no movement of head
I took my jacket off but when I turned around, she was trying to make her way towards me
she too a few wobbely steps then fell flat out in a heap, I picked her up to put her back on her
duvet and there was absolutely no movement, it feels like she doesn't even have enough strength
to pick her head up, the food she did have last night has been vomited back up..
this does not look good :'(
I also went down to speak to the lady whom I got Olivia from, but she was not in, Her son was tho,
and I told him what was happening, He informed me that his Mum Liz has no cat's now
I knew about Gypsy ( Olivias Mum ) she was 13 when she was pts, but I was shocked when He told
me that Jack ( Olivias son ) was pts when he was 5 because of CRF
I honestly don't think it is the Kidneys that are doing this to Olivia, as the vet said Olivias kidney problem
was caught Very early? maybe she is having an adverse reaction to the anesthetic, or they have given her
too much ??
I don't know?? I will keep you informed what happens
:'(
-
Will be thinking of you both  Please try and stay positive though Stuart  When Riley was ill a few months ago he was totally unresponsive, wouldn't move, wouldn't even sniff his favourite treats or respond to my voice, when he did start eating he couldn't keep anything down. I was really worried but he made a full recovery so it could be that Olivia has some sort of virus that has been exacerbated by the procedure she had yesterday
-
we are taking her to the vet's now!!
we aren't going to wait
-
Your're doing the right thing Stuart, poor little love. Will be thinking of her
-
fingers crossed Stuart
-
Hope Olivia will be ok Stuart , maybe just anasethtic reaction .
Loads of healing vibes being sent right now and loads of
Will be checking on here to see how she is .

So sorry :'(
Bye little one
-
Thanks Guy's
this is so heart breaking :'(
Olivia is home just now, but we have an appointment at the cremetorium tomorrow so she can be
with us always, where ever we go..
The Vet said he did not know what was happening to Olivia, but he did say a couple of things which got
me thinking, I got it wrong, Olivia was not anethetized for the xray, she was sedated using diazepam
Ironically I think it was this that Killed Olivia, and would like to warn other's of the danger
I have read a couple of things on the internet including Overdose and adverse reaction
I feel that Olivia may have been one of the rare cats that sucumb to an adverse reaction
I would hate to think that they accidentally gave Olivia an Overdose
Here are the quotes of which I have read
Overdose
Overdose with diazepam alone produces significant Central Nervous System depression (disorientation, depression, decreased reflexes, coma). Combinations of diazepam with other CNS depressant drugs may increase the severity and complicate treating an overdose. Cardiovascular and respiratory support measures may be necessary.
Valium (diazepam) and Serax (oxazepam)
When giving these tranquilizers to cats, it is extremely important to always
keep a close watch on them when the drug takes effect to make sure they
don't fall off anything. They may be a bit unsteady, wobbly and uncoordinated
as their central nervous system is affected by these drugs. By experimentation
you may find a dose small enough not to cause noticeable CNS depression
while still stimulating appetite.
Warning: Some cats cannot tolerate diazepam. In these cats the drug causes
massive liver and kidney damage and death within a short time. While the
percentage of cats that are susceptible to this reaction is extremely small,
the reaction is so serious that it must be a factor in the decision to use
diazepam to treat inappetence.
sorry I can't write anymore justnow :'( :'(
-
Stuart sometimes it is just outwith anyones control and thats the hardest part
We may see you tomorrow at the Crematorium we are picking up Sweetie at 10.45am

OMG Stuart I don't come in this section much and heard on one of the other threads.

Mary
-
Stu, I'm so sorry. Thinking of you and Carol. Xxx
-
So sorry Stuart, rip Olivia
-
This is so very sad - RIP Olivia xxxx :'( :'(
-
I give Ollie Diazepam when he takes seizures, Its tubes of the rectal Diazepam i use.
Each tube is 10 mg and i give him half a tube, then more if he has other seizures.
Reading the leaflet is says for surgical procedures its 0.2mg per kg of body weight
I gues as with all medicines they can cause bad reactions
So so sad :(
-
Olivia is now at the Crematorium we missed Stuart and Carol by 10 mins this morning
-
I have sent you a PM Liz
-
Oh no :'( I am so sorry.

So So sorry Stuart
RIP beautiful Olivia - play hard at the Bridge sweetie xxx
-
It is tragic if it was an adverse reacton, are you planning to talk to the vet about the possibility Stuart? Thinking of you
-
I would just like to thank everyone for their condolencies and PM's it is so much appreciated
Hi Gillian
No, I won't be talking to the vet about the chances of it being an adverse reaction, deep
down I feel that that is what happened. apart from the not eating Olivia was still bright.
but when we came back from the vet's on wednesday night, she was obviously still under
sedation, as her Pupils were huge and she was very unsteady, she had something to eat
and drink then we put her next to a heater, when I came down in the morning, I was
expecting her to be up and about, but she basically hadnt moved ?? Her eye's were still
dilated, and over the course of the morning, I was expecting her to come to, but even I
could see she seemed to be getting worse
We took her back to the vet's ( which weren't really filling me with confidence as the two
vet's we had seen were both in their twenty's ) Olivia was examined again, and she said
she had no Idea why Oliva was in the way she was?. she went away to get another vet
for a second opinion, an older guy, and his very first words were " Oh my goodness "
by this stage Olivia could not stand and did not even have the strength to lift her head
( Her Pupils were still dilated ) same as before this vet could not understand why she was
in this state, the only thing He mentioned was about the Diazepam ( Valium ) that was
used to sedate her, going on to say that in very rare cases, some cat's can have an adverse
reaction to it, He didn't say that was what was happening, and I am no vet, but as I have
said, to me, this was the cause ( especially with the eye's still being dilated, as tho she was
still under sedation ) ontop of this the vet said that apart from her heart murmur and slight
signs of kindney issues, her blood results were practically normal.
We were given the Option of putting Olivia on a drip for a couple of hour's to see if that would
pick her up, but he was very Optomistic, it was at that point i said to him
" It looks as tho Olivia is Dying " He looked at me and said yes...it does, Carol and I had a talk
and it was decided that for Olivia, there was no option but the final kindness :'(
Olivia is back home now, and is currently placed in one of her favorite spots
next to me on the computer desk, this was the very last photo taken of her ( 25th jan )
I'm Missing her so much :'( :'( :'(
(http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd228/culnara/P1000171-Copy.jpg)
-
what a sad post Stuart - hope your hearts will mend soon
-
Oh Stuart, that is heart wrenching :'(
I understand about not talking to the vet about it - I was convinced that the convenia jab given to my Suzie RIP who had CRF, was what caused her to deteriorate, and was going to talk to the vet about it - but part of me didnt really want to know if it could have been the cause - because it would just be to hard to bear. I still do feel thats what it was, but don't really want to have it confirmed if you know what I mean?
-
Gorgeous photo Stuart  :Luv2:  You will miss her as much as Hamish and Misty but you and Carol have a wonderful baby on the way which you must try and concentrate on.
Olivia was looked afer like a Princess from the day she came into your life and she couldn't have asked for more.
Mary
-
I'm so sorry. Read this thread a few days ago and came back for an update. My heart is breaking for you but you gave her a wonderful and the final act of kindness.
-
Thanks Guys, still trying to keep busy and not dwell on the thoughts of the last few days
but it isn't easy, it's the first thing that comes into my mind when I awake :'(
I go down stairs and there's no Olivia to give breakfast to and no Olivia to give her, her early morning brush :'(
I still go into the back garden to top up the bird feeder's, but I just end up in a blubbering mess as
Olivia would always follow and watch me before she would go and sit under her tree to watch the birds
:'(
although the cremetorium now places the ashes into a beautiful woven basket instead of an envelope
I have finally got round to buying the cat Caskets which I meant to get for Hamish and Misty ages ago
just wished I didn't have to buy one for Olivia too :'(
Carol and myself have been grieving on our own, but tonight was the first time we sat down and talked
about it all, Carol also thinks it was the Diazepam that took Olivia, and in her word's....
" although the vet mentioned the adverse reaction, he just seemed to skim over it, and didn't play on it for long "
no other real reason was given to explain Olivia's condition
Oh Stuart, that is heart wrenching :'(
I understand about not talking to the vet about it - I was convinced that the convenia jab given to my Suzie RIP who had CRF, was what caused her to deteriorate, and was going to talk to the vet about it - but part of me didnt really want to know if it could have been the cause - because it would just be to hard to bear. I still do feel thats what it was, but don't really want to have it confirmed if you know what I mean?
Yes Gillian Carol and I had a similar conversation, and like yourself, we thought the same
the Vet did ask if we wanted a PM done to find the exact cause.... I said NO!!
at the end of the day, Our Little girl was gone and nothing was going to bring her back :'(
-
Stuart sometime hindsight is a wonderful thing anf the what ifs list I have is far to long
She graced your life and you loved her very much as did Carol, the tears will flow and I know mine have been in overdrive with loosing Sweetie and Echo missing (now found 40 foot up a tree SSPCA coming to rescue him in the morning)
One day the tears will lessen and you can remember her with all the love she gave you and one day you will smile again
-
Can only offer you loads of
This is heart breaking and i really feel for you both . :'( :'(
It makes you worry more when you go to the vets about what they give them nowadays - if you have a really good vet -stick with them .
I am lucky that i do have a very good vet , but i do worry what i will do when he retires and he is over 60 i think now .
-
   Stuart and Carol, so so sad reading your post
-
So so sad - Stuart and Carol
-
Just catching up on this - so sorry to hear about Olivia, Stuart. RIP sweetheart. Play hard at the bridge with all the other Purrs babes.
-
So sad, RIP Olivia
-
Oh goodness, I too have only just caught this.
My thoughts are with you at this sad time
RIP gorgeous girly xxx
-
I am back at work, but we are still not busy
because of this I can't stop thinking about Olivia, I mean it happened all so quick :'(
I know what's done is done and there is no way of turning back the clock, but another thing that keeps going through my mind
is that the day she went in for the x-ray, the nurse asked me to put her on the scales ( even tho she was still in Her Carrier )
she took note of the weight, then I handed her to the nurse and she took her through the house..
now I keep thinking, was the reading of Her weight " including the Carrier " used to determine the amount of sedative to be administered??
I keep having question's coming into my head now, question's that will never be answered, I'm sure they wouldn't admit it
anyway if they were in the wrong..
Carol is just breaking her heart being at home alone justnow, and I know when it is time for me to come home again, it will
be just as raw :'(
-
:(
-
 to you both
-
Oh Stuart, I know what you are going through, all the 'what ifs' etc and its hard to get those questions out of your head. Actually, I think, its a process that needs to be worked through before you can come out the other side, even though it hurts, if that makes sense?
-
its such a sad thing and so hard to stop thinking these questions, and I know I did this when Kocka went to the Bridge. To be honest it doesnt matter if you are busy or not and it is part of the grieving process
-
Stuart, like Gillian and Gill, I understand so well what you are going through with the 'what ifs'. I think it is part of the grieving process but that doesn't help you right now and no, your questions won't be answered by the vets. There's nothing I can say to ease your pain except that many of us on Purrs have been there too and you are amongst good friends   to you and Carol.
-
Nothing to add to whats been said .
Just wanted to say -i really feel for you and know how you are feeling -its so heartbreaking about Olivia .
Can only send you a million of these
-
   There's nothing I can say to help but I do understand and sympathise.
-
Thank you so much Guy's and Thank's to all the ppl who have PM'd me
I kept thinking of the vet on the last day saying the x-ray was fine ( never saw it )
and the same vet confering with the other one that the bloods were basically normal ( never got a print out of that either )
I just feel that the whole affair was handled very shoddily, which in turn was making me want to hear answers as to why
this happened..
I have decided not to go any further on this as no matter what we do, it will not bring back our sweet Olivia :(
we got the 282gbp bill in today from the vet's for Olivia's treatment, including a box of Fortekor
we will just pay it
Thanks again to everyone for all your support during this sad time
Kindest Regards
Stuart.....
-
I guess you will never know, the only certaintly is that she was spoilt rotten and couldn't have wished for a better Dad (& Mum of course)
Please don't be a stranger Stuart, we are all here for you over the coming days, weeks and months
-
Stuart, it's really hard when there's unanswered questions. It's happened to me in the past and I drove myself mad trying to figure things out.
You're right. It won't bring Olivia back and I think it'll make it more difficult to deal with your grief. Am sending a hug to you both. :care:

 Really sorry to read you have lost Olivia so suddenly. :'( I don't think it is likely that the cause was a negligent overdose for a couple of reasons - firstly that (in humans) the therapeutic window - difference between useless and harmful doses - is quite large. I just looked up the oral LD50 - lethal dose for 50% :'( - which is 1g per kg bodyweight in dogs and 0.7g per kg in mice ... a massive dose. The primary risk in humans is mixing the drug with another depressant such as alcohol which act together to slow or stop respiration. Secondly I would imagine that is is commonplace to weigh cats with carrier, just as it is normal in my line of work to weigh humans with clothing (!) - making allowances is second nature and we use a standard quantity (0.5kg).
HTH.
-
Thanx Guys
Yes Fire Fox Carol said a very similar thing
I suppose I am just going through the ( wanting somone to blame stage )

im not on often but So sorry to read this  x
