Title: advice please
Post by: Elanor3 on December 10, 2010, 12:34:30 PM
Indie is currently on another course of steroids as has always taken his tablets very easily - i usually just drop them in his mouth with a whiskas treat and he swallows them straight away - he has now decided he does not want to take them and for the past week I have had to hold him and force them into his mouth by prising his mouth open  :(  I hate having to do it this way as is stressful for all concerned and upsetting (not to mention hard as Indie is a large cat and is rather powerful to boot).  I have tried different things to disguise it including Kitbits, dentibits, cheese, ham, chicken, dairylea, philadelphia, yoghurt and even a little butter!!  Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated as he has a good two more weeks of tablets to have yet  :scared:

Primula coating the tablet works on worming tablets. Or you can get a pill gun that literally sends the tablet down the cat so fast they can't spit it out.... ;)

Have you tried Webbox treat sticks? you just break a bit off and squish the pill into it, might be worth trying, although looks like you tried lots already!  :)

I always put tablets in some soft liver pate - works every time.

Good luck.

I have to say, the hiding it trick only works for a day or two then my two catch on! So I have no choice but to pill them using the open their mouth and massage the throat option.

I am very lucky that my two are very easy to do on my own, Dave in particular doesn't really care, as long as he gets a treat or two afterwards, he doesn't even move when I get up from holding him :evillaugh:

So it's easier to just mildly stress them for 10 seconds than try loads of different treats which only stresses me out.

I crush Molly's and mix it in with her food, she is a very fussy cat when things are added to her food, but she iis fine with steroids as long as there is enough food

Basically I just use the open the mouth method, OK so I might have to do a bit of chasing to get the tablet down but on the whole the two that need them on a regular basis now come when they see me with the tablet bottle

Defurrum cat treats were always a Godsend with Max, most small to medium size tablets would fit!  If you break the biscuit in half, put the tablet in the gooey centre and then put it back together again, its brilliant!
