Title: another stray
Post by: daren on December 04, 2010, 15:18:43 PM
we have had a cat hanging around for about 6 month now and i am fairly sure been living rough
in our garden for the last 2 months. everytime one of us went near him he would bolt terrified.
so we put some food out and he has been taking it. eventually he let us near him.
have got a bit worried with the snow and cold lately so he now has a shelter under our carport.
he now spends most of his time in this and just goes missing for a hour or 2 midday.
and now comes in for a warm infront of the fire for a couple of hours each day.
have put a collar on him a couple of days ago with the message is this your cat and my number on it.
so far no reply but to be honest im not expecting one.
today i decided to take him to the vets to see if he had been chipped.
i now know he is male and still has all his bits and hasn't been chipped.
whilst there i also had him tested for fiv/fev he has been given the all clear.
the reason i had him tested is im thinking of letting him stay with us and i have 2 of my own already

since taking the last pic i have nicknamed him garfield :evillaugh:

well we are already feeding him.
just depends how our cats take to him they have met through a part open door and had a good sniff
non of them have shown any aggression towards each other.
when he sits on the step samson purrs and rubs his head on the glass.

Garfield is just soooooooooooooo gorgeous and knows a good place when he finds one  ;D ;D

Brings a tear to my eye cos back in London I had a stray hanging round for months, since about May, he would go in the house but was terrified if you we nt towards him, I had Kocka back then who hated all cats. He started coming in at night and sleeping in a box in the kitchen once the winter came but as soon as I would walk through he would be gone out the flap.

Gingerbread was a bit lighter coloured than Garfield and short haired and on Christmas day he came through the flap just as I had put Kockas turkey and jelly down and he sat behind a cupboard watching her eat. Just him coming in like that was surprise and I put a dish of turkey and jelly down for him but he waited for Kocka to finish before he tucked in.

On Boxing day he came and sat on my lap and purred and purred  ;D

Sadly I had to ask CP to rehome him cos Kocka was attacking him and making his ears bleed and he would just sit there ant let her,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it broke my heart. He went to a good home immediately but will never forget him.

Do you use Feliway to help calm them in these situations?
Title: Re: another stray
Post by: daren on December 05, 2010, 10:34:28 AM
i havn't used feliway just taking it slow letting them get used to each others scent.
had the door slightly open between them this morning and they touched noses and my
two gave a friendly chirp like they do when they greet each other and had paws through
the door trying to touch him.
samson and nibbles went in the room where he had been and had a sniff :shify: about for 10mins
then went back to watching the birds through the window.
no matter how close to the corner of the window nibbles is samson has to jump into the
corner and nearly fell out this morning :)

HE is lovely - I wouldnt let them meet till he has been neutered though, as the hormones might affect the introduction process - it can take up to six weeks after being neutered for everything to settle though.

Post by: daren on December 05, 2010, 11:03:23 AM
:thanks: as i said just taking it really slowly as don't want to upset my two.
the vet was really helpfull and said to castrate is £34.19 but if i get intouch with cat protection
they will give a voucher that will make it £14.19 saving £20 then his id chip £17.74
then his injections £65.63 for the full set
also need to see if he is litter trained.

Post by: Fire Fox on December 05, 2010, 11:54:20 AM
Garfield looks in good shape, not all knotted.  :Luv2: Could you put a litter tray in the carport or elsewhere he is allowed? Some cats do prefer a tray in this weather as they can't dig properly, having said that I understand outside toileting is part of territory marking which will be important to Garfield until he is snipped. Hope you can get a voucher soon as I am sure you don't want him spraying in your house; the behaviour of your two does sound promising for introductions too! :wow:
Title: Re: another stray
Post by: daren on December 05, 2010, 16:10:20 PM
been and fetched a tray today to be honest i didn't think of putting it in the carport good idea.
he is quite well groomed although i have noticed a knot on his neck he has a bald patch and
a scar about 1 1/2" in the same spot looks like its healed well now.
he has spent most of the day flat out in front of the fire and has also had a good brush.
looks a bit fuzzy now

WOW he is beautiful !

Your story is very much the same as mine with Tramp. He turned up as an un-neutered stray, took me 6mths to be able to touch him but he now lives happily with my 10 other cats. He has been with us for 5yrs.....he was diagnosed as FIV+ a couple of months ago. (something I've always known he would be but didnt see the point in testing)

Get this handsome lad neutered as quick as possible....

Good luck, looks like he has found himself a lovely home xx

garfield spent his first night inside the conservatory had his litter tray with him but didn't use it.
spent the night curled up with his blanket on the settee.
let him out this morning he was reluctant to go out but needed to go.
back within 5 Min's and had a good feed.
i have phoned cp and they are happy to send a voucher for his castration.
he has been curled up on the settee with me for a couple of hours and is now hogging the fire.
since comming in his mood has changed he has perked up.
I'm not surprised as the temperatures he has had to deal with in the past week have been appalling.
-12c outside at the moment

So pleased things are working out for you and Garfield.  He is gorgeous by the way reminds me of a foster I had called Marmaduke.

garfield now spends his nights in the conservatory and his days in the living room
and has no intention of going out unless nessasary.
my two have the use of conservatory in the day and living room at night have noticed
that they don't seem to concerend that there is another cat in the house not sniffing
around as much now.
still not used litter tray and no mess.
i have asked around local shops looking on notice boards and lamposts and asked at vets
and nobody has reported him missing also looked on lost cats site and gone back at least 6 months
but nothing so looks like he is here to stay.

he also looking better with a good brush and some warmth.

thanks the vet put him down as british longhair but he has a very distinctive look
in his face and coat so not sure probably bit of a mix.

Title: Re: another stray
Post by: daren on December 13, 2010, 20:45:09 PM
garfield is at the vets tonight ready for his op tomorrow.
he had a good check up and he is quite healthy but has very dirty ears with mites.
and some fleas so they are going to sort that out whilst he is in.
also having him chipped and his knot removed from his neck.
the vet said the scar near the knot could have been from him scratching trying to remove the knot.
all being well he will be back tomorrow afternoon probably not in the best of moods.

I know it is all for his benefit and am sure he will be back to his normal self within a few hours of being home.

Post by: daren on December 16, 2010, 19:41:13 PM
havn't been able to get on the internet for a couple of days.
garfield had his op tuesday all went well also he had a shave and is
now tidy and knot free.
they looked at his ears and no mites just filthy  nice and clean now.
had him chiped whilst there and wormed  just incase.
took him for his post op last night and on the way back he had a touch of
wind in the car    poor thing couldn't hold on and had a
accident in his carrier  all cleaned up when we got home though and
he is alright now.
using his tray so thats a relief.
decided to let him meet nibbles last night and he just rolled over when he saw him
nibbles was a little wary had a sniff and that was it.
so today i decided that he should meet samson.
i thought this would be a little harder as samson doesn't like to be picked up.

samson was lying on settee and garfield walked up to him jumped up and sniffed him then
turned around and lay down on opposite side of settee purring with no reaction from samson
i sat between them stroking both for a while then samson jumped off and walked towards garfield.
he put his front paws on the settee to sniff garfield and garfield just rolled over with his paws out
trying to touch samson.
samson then got down and walked away into the kitchen and was more concerened that he couldn't get
to nibbles in the bedroom.
all in all a good reaction so might try them all together tommorow for a few minutes.
the vet said just chuck them together and let them get on with it

He is utterly utterly gorgeous and with his wide face - he really has the look of his namesake in a way!

I've got a massive soft spot for ginger cats, the first cat I ever owned was a ginger cat my mum had found dumped in a dustbin (before the days of youtube and the internet) whom she got when I was a baby.

He so reminds me of a foster I had that ended up being sent to the National Rehoming centre for CP that was newly built a few years ago at headquarters.  His name was Marmaduke but he was already neutered so sort of ruled him out.
