Lovely Peter came to us yesterday but isn't in the best of health at the moment. He was found as a stray in a state of near collapse, it was touch and go whether he would survive but after several days at the vets has pulled through. He is a very gentle and affectionate boy, around 14, in need of lots of tlc - bloods were all OK. He is very thin and matted and is hyperthyroid which has to be stabilised before he is well enough for an anaesthetic for dental work and to shave some fur. It is quite upsetting but he has settled well - poor boy has a solid ridge of matted fur along the top of his back and some on his tummy but is enjoying being brushed as much as I can, eating well and snuggling up in the warm. The lady that helped him to safety wants to visit which is really nice. I so hope I can help him enough :(.

I am sure you are already helping him and hope he is much better soon

Lots of hugs for Peter

I sounds like he he getting the TLC he needs Chris
I'm sure he will be fine :Luv2:
-
At least he is in a warm place with plenty of food, which is the best thing a hyper-t cat needs - do you know how high his values are? I do hope you can stabilise that.
-
Hugs to you both.
-
Bless him!
-
Aw poor wee man, glad he's with you now in the safe and warm getting nice food and cuddles :Luv2:
-
Hope he'll soon be well, Chris, poor little man :(
-
Poor baby :(
:get well: Peter :care:

:thanks: everyone. Your good wishes are working as Peter seems brighter today. He is more steady when walking and happy to be brushed - lots of loose fur and flea dirts coming out so I think he feels more comfy as he washed his face after eating tonight. Desley, I don't know how high his values are - this is my first experience of hyper-t so any advice would be appreciated. He has many of the symptons I have read up about including claws not retracting properly. Would the meds be kicking in yet (has been on them for a week) as today he doesn't seem to be drinking/weeing as excessively as before.
-
I would definitely ask how high his values are, as in my experience, the higher they are, the more of a struggle you have getting them down. They should be kicking in, and my other advice would be to make sure that once his levels start coming down his kidneys are rechecked, as hyper-t can mask CRF.

Totally agree with Desley :)

Peter is much improved and well settled here. Unfortunately he has not put on as much weight as we hoped but his heartbeat is now normal so is booked in for a much needed dental tomorrow morning and bloods will be tested again.

Sending lots of good vibes for Peter's dental tomorrow   Wot a lovely chap he looks :Luv: :Luv:

very distinguished looking cat. Hope his op went ok
-
Peter is my sort of cat :Luv: hope all went well today.

All went well for Peter and he is back home - a bit wobbly but has had a little kitten food (not enough though he is telling me !). He had several teeth removed and they were in a bad way, some crumbling, so I am sure he will soon be feeling much more comfortable. Should get test results in a day or two to see how hyper-t level is going. Vet nurses love him and his gentle nature.
Thanks for all your good wishes.

very distinguished looking cat.
I agree! :)
How's his thyroid now?
-
Peter is doing really, really well since his dental :naughty: He is so much brighter and I think he must have been in a lot of pain before, poor boy - it was a bit of a risk as to whether he was well enough for the anaesthetic but the vet felt his teeth had become a priority and it was definitely the right decision. The other good news is that his thyroid level is now 26 which the vet said is mid-point within the 'normal' range which is great. Hopefully he will now start to gain some weight - his next appointment is not for another month when he may be OK for vaccs. Peter says :thanks: for all your good wishes.
-
That is excellent news :) :)
When my Sam had bloods done prior to his dental (3 years ago) - his thyroid levels came back borderline normal/Hyper-T. They retested after the dental and it was right smack in the middle of normal range where he has been every since. I was told that the need for a dental can affect some of the blood results readings.
Anyhow hope he goes from strength to strength - well done you and Peter of course.
-
Wonderful news for Peter..............now we need some pics ;) ;)
-
Excellent news :) The teeth being sorted really seems to make such a huge difference (it did for Tiggy too) I guess we don't realise just how much it affects them until we see how they are after a dental.

My lovely foster boy went peacefully to the bridge this evening. He had seemed really well recently but this evening was very unsteady and although tried to eat and drink was having difficulty standing. We took him to the emergency vet who could feel large tumours on his kidney and in his stomach which must have been fast growing as he had a check up in May which was fine. Peter had been with us since November last year and was the most gentle and affectionate cat with lots of character and personality. I will miss him so much but am happy that we were able to help him in his last months and even this morning he enjoyed his favourite meal of chicken for breakfast. Love you P, XXX
