Title: Lukey & Riley both at the vets today - scene of devastation in my house!
Post by: Tiggy's Mum on October 05, 2010, 19:15:38 PM
Friday night I caught Riley munching on a pastic tag, I can only presume that he had eaten a long strip of plastic as it was nowhere to be seen and he was caught red-handed munching on the tag. He seemed completely normal bouncing around, cuddling, eating, drinking, pooing etc I rang the vets and they said if it hadn't passed by Monday to take him in, rang on Monday and they said as he was fine in himself to leave it til Wednesday.

Anyway, this morning he had diarrhoea so I booked an appointment for tomorrow. Lucas has been absolutely fine throughout the last few days although there was a tiny sneaking suspicion that he might have munched on the plastic and Riley was just finishing his leftovers.

Fast forward to this afternoon and poor Lu was sick on my bedroom carpet, I cleaned it up and a few minutes later he came back into my bedroom and did the biggest wee I have ever seen right in front of me on the carpet  :hairrasin: He then ran away with diarrhoea tumbling out of him so it was all over my bedroom, the landing, the stairs. I locked him in the front room while I rang the vets and he did more puddles of diarrhoea in the living room  :tired:

Took them both to the vets and the vet said Lu had a temperature so he has had antibiotics and an enti-emetic to stop him feelling sick. Riley's temp was fine but as there was a tiny bit of blood in his diarrhoea he has had an anti-inflammatory and anti-biotic jab. The vet wasn't sure if the plastic was a red herring as I showed him an identical thing to the one that was eaten and he said it was very felxible and unlikely to cause a problem.  I have to collect poo samples over the next few days in case they don't improve, ordinarily I would have been horrified by the thought of that but as I have been dissecting poos for signs of yellow plastic over the last 4 days that's nothing to a hardened poo dissector  :evillaugh:

Please send positive vibes for both my boys to get better, I hate seeing them poorly and my carpet is taking a bashing too!

:thanks: everyone, they're both bright in themselves and are more annoyed than anything else at being locked out of the bedrooms for damage limitation purposes!  :evillaugh: I've just cooked them some chicken breast for dinner so hopefully they'll eat OK as that was the main problem last time they were poorly.

:( Poor boys, I hope they're much better soon

wonder if it's what Riley had before that's not cleared up proper?

 :thanks:

That's what I'm leaning towards now as well, especially as Lu had a temperature. I bet the insurance compnay won't think of it like that though and if I do have to claim for this lot of visits and future tests I bet they'll say it's two separate conditions  :innocent:

I wish my son-in-laws the very best xx

Oh dear, I imagine all three of you are stressed out.  :'( If the vet wants poop samples I am assuming they will be able to narrow down the cause of the diarrhoea, should be ammo for the insurers? Do you have any LactoB or similar in stock?

I'm on nights so off to bed in a minute so fingers crossed I don't wake up to the scene of devastation that I was met with yesterday

Oh no poor boys!  It was bad enough with Rossi's sick last week, thankfully he didn't get diarrhoea as well

Hope they are both feeling better very soon. I wonder if cats are prone to seasonal bugs the same way as humans are? Lu and Riley's illness sounds very similar to Rossi's.

I am just about to start a thorough deep clean of back bedroom where Groucho decided to go skiing ALL around the wooden floor last night after a bout of diarrhoea (caused I'm sure from OH feeding him the wrong dry food yesterday am)  I therefore know how you're feeling about the clean up.  Suppose wooden floor easier to clean but I couldn't sleep all night worrying that Groucho might have got splinters in his nether regions as he howled twice  :(  Seems 100% today and hope you can say likewise about the boys toot sweet Helen

Thankfully I haven't woken up to any more devastation, they were locked in the living room overnight with the trays and was going to do the same for today but I had visions of Riley ripping the carpet up at the door if he knew I was upstairs and he wasn't allowed to sleep on his Mum's bed so relented and just shut off the spare room. No poos, runny or otherwise to report  :shify:

Fingers crossed the jabs and chicken will help and you won't wake up to any problems.  If it appears they are going to take a couple of days to settle down, it might be worth having a couple of litter trays around the house in the hope that they can make it there in time!

Great minds think alike, the spare room where the trays normally are is on lockdown and have moved one tray to the living room and one to the landing for maximum spread. They're both such good boys with the trays so it must have been horrible for poor Lu to have had to 'let it all out' where he stood and then have it trailing out of him as he ran away  :(

Both boys are bright and happy - eating, drinking, weeing but.... no poos from either of them coming up to 48 hours now :shify:

I guess the diarrhoea had cleaned them out, they've only eaten chicken breast since they came back from the vets so maybe super quality protein takes longer to pass through?!

Had to take them both back to the vets this morning, Lucas hasn't been sick or had diarrhoea since his episode on Tuesday afternoon but he hadn't produced anything poo-wise for 3 1/2 days! He no longer has a temperature and apparently there is formed faeces waiting to come through so hopefully he's now fixed.

Riley hadn't done anything either until two runny poos last night, he's had another antibiotic jab and they're going to send his samples off. Vet said she hopes that by the time his results come back that he's better. She gave me some RC sensitive as the chicken being pure protein and no carbs could be why it's taking so long to come through. Lu just ate two portions as Riley, the one who actually needs it as he has a poorly tum still,  doesn't like it  :innocent:

That's often the case after diarrhoea though it goes the other way then.   Hopefully as the vet says things will be cleared up by the time the results are back but best to get it checked

Sadly neither wish has come true yet Carol!

Lu STILL hasn't poo'd since the diarrhoea on Tuesday afternoon. I did let them out into the garden yesterday for the first time, I was keeping half an eye on them and did see Lucas scraping in the rockery so went over to investigate but no sign of anything so I'm fairly sure it must have been a wee  :shify: The vet did say that what she could feel wasn't too hard so didn't think he was constipated - since Tuesday night he's eaten at least 7 chicken breasts and 6 sachets of RC sensitive so something has got to come sooner or later!

Riley had another runny poo last night but the vet did say what she could feel inside was quite squishy so suspected there was more to come  :tired: They're both still eating like horses and are both very happy/playful/affectionate still. Just need to sort their tummies out  :shy:

Post by: Janeyk on October 10, 2010, 20:12:58 PM
Schui was always a bit constipated and what used to help him was massaging his tummy in a clockwise direction very gently.

Glad to hear that they both seem well on themselves though  :)

Antibiotics can give some humans diarrhoea as it wipes out the 'friendly' bacteria, so hopefully that is why Riley is still not 100%.

How are things today Helen ?

Still not right. Thanks for thinking of them though

I'm now really worried about Lu again, he last poo'd on Tuesday afternoon when he had the explosive diarrhea. There's a slim chance that he did one un-noticed in the garden on Saturday but I don't think so. That's 6 days without going and he's eaten 7 chicken breasts and 10 pouches of RC sensitive in that time  :scared: He still seems fine in himself, eating, drinking, weeing and happy to have his tummy rubbed.

When I took him to the vets on Sat she said she could feel nicely formed poo (ie not diarrhea and not hard poo) but it was quite high up and had a little way to go. I switched him to RC sensitive on her advice as the pure protein of the chicken breast was taking it's time and RC sensitive has carbs in but still no sign of anything. I think 6 days is too much (7 tomorrow) so am going to ring them tomorrow morning to see if I should take him back. I so hope he won't have to have a 'procedure' he's such a sensitive little soul it would upset him so much  :(

Riley hasn't poo'd since Saturday night so not sure how his tummy is, he's eaten his body weight in chicken breasts but the diarrhoea has continued even though he's been eating chicken for a week now.

I've rigged up the laptop and webcam in the spare room to 'monitor' the litter tray area, I really don't want to separate them to see who does what so while it's not foolproof (they might both use the same tray!) it's better than nothing  :shy:

Well 'toilet cam' has already paid off, I noticed a few grains of litter in front of the camera so went upstairs to inspect the offerings, looked back at the images and it was Riley... he produced (another) wee and a ridiculously small but well formed poo before joyously kicking litter in front of the webcam  ;D  ;D ;D

Another success with 'toilet cam' Lu was captured on CCTV sneaking into the litter tray at 07:55, reviewing the images he was the only cat to use it and wait for it, drum roll.... There was a miniature but well formed poo  :happy dance:

It really was teeny so where on earth the 7 chicken breasts and 10 pouches of food have gone I don't know but at least things are moving now!  ;D

They'd have an absolute field day  Crazy cat lady tips over the edge  :evillaugh:

Makes perfect sense to me though, I needed to know who did what and 'toilet cam' means that I don't have to faff around separating the boys and trapping them in separate rooms with a tray each! Anyway, it's not as weird as it sounds, it's not a close up or anything - it just shows which cat goes into which hooded tray  ;)

Poor Riley seems to have had a relapse  :( He had diarrhoea twice last night, has just been sick and had two more bouts of diarrhoea this morning  :(

He started back on normal food on Wednesday so looks like his little body can't take it, back to chicken breast I guess as he won't eat the RC sensitive.

I sent a sample on Wednesday , can tell you squeezing rock solid poop from 6 kittens into a tiny tub was a work of art  I am almost convinced that this is all the work of a teeny parasite.
Hope Riley is soon back to normal soon.

I spoke to the vet yesterday (Thursday) afternoon pre his relapse, the first part of the test has come back clear (worms, worm eggs negative). Just waiting on the bacterial side of things, I'm kicking myself now as I said to her that I wasn't worried as all poos had returned to normal.

Sods law that I'm back to work today after a week off so can't keep an eye on him and be there for him if he's feeling poorly :(

Edit: Sorry, so wrapped up in feeling sorry for Riley I forgot to say hope the tests come back clear for the muckspots Teresa

Maybe Riley just has an acid tummy from not eating properly for a while, it ought to be a positive sign that he is hungry. I'd be worried if it was my furball.

Is there any chance it could be related to the plastic chewing a little while ago, maybe a bit still stuck in his stomach so he's got a blockage somewhere? I can't remember what the outcome of that was.

It does sound positive that he's got an appetite, hope that the vet can give you some answers and he gets back to normal  very soon:hug:

Thanks for all the positive vibes and thoughts, they really are appreciated

Update is that he had me up all night, not because he was poorly but because he was being a pest trying to open drawers and pull things out from behind furniture! I fed him a small amount of chicken breast at around 3am and slept in the spare room with him so I could hear if he was being sick as if he was loose in the house and was sick somewhere hidden I'd be none the wiser. I then fed him some more chicken at 7am and again at midday and he kept all three meals down which is positive.

I decided against taking him to the vets this morning as a) he was now keeping food down and b) until we get the results of the faecal test on Monday (hopefully) they won't really know how to treat it so as long as he is keeping chicken breast down and otherwise happy in himself I'm going to leave it until I speak to the vets about the test results before I take him back. I have a funny feeling they're all going to come back negative which will mean we are at square one with no idea why he's poorly  :tired:

The vets seem to think it's a bit of a red herring, he is passing motions (runny ones, although he had two 'normal' poos in the midst of all this diarrhoea) which would rule out a blockage but he was doing a funny flicking thing with his mouth/tongue yesterday like something was irritating him so I don't know.

Maybe Riley just has an acid tummy from not eating properly for a while, it ought to be a positive sign that he is hungry. I'd be worried if it was my furball.

The thing is FF he has been eating like a horse, albeit purely chicken breast so his tummy was used to eating. I'm a bit worried about feeding him just chicken breast long term, he won't eat the RC sensitive so he's eaten exclusively chicken for 10/11 days now - does anyone know if it could be harming him ie lack of taurine or something?
Title: Re: Lukey & Riley both at the vets today - scene of devastation in my house!
Post by: Mark on October 17, 2010, 13:54:40 PM
I think the Taurine thing is an issue long-term but no idea how long. There isn't much in cooked chicken other than protein and a bit of fat - it is seriously low in calcium so if he will drink milk it is a good idea - maybe cimicat or similar?

Hope his appetite improves - have you tried some smelly a/d?

Sorry Riley is not well again and sometimes its a vicious cycle that eventually breaks of its own accord.

I know that I had problems getting Franta to eat a couple of years ago and he now will only eat one food and a bit of another. Then he had tail end probs which only lacto B resolved and it returns mildly every so often.

Sometimes frequent vet vists seem to make them worse and maybe stress has a role in this too.

I do hope Riley is back to normal quickly

Poor Riley was sick a few hours after I posted this and then again in the morning so I ended up taking him to the emergency vets today, he's had another anti-biotic jab and an anti-emetic.

The strange thing is he still has an appetite and when he's not actually being sick is quite perky in himself  :shy: If he carries on being sick then he's to go back tomorrow and if not then he's to go back on Tuesday.

Hoping the poor lad feels 100% soon. And hugs to you, this must be terribly worrying.  (Clearly, I have to send a fuss to both cats. ;))

The second batch of faecal results came back today, negative for all nasty types of bacteria so have no idea what is causing this. He's going back tomorrow for another check up and she's ordered some different sensitive wet foods for him to try as chicken breast long term isn't good for him. He hasn't been sick today which is a plus but still need to get rid of this diarrhoea, he's had it for two weeks now  :(

 Have you tried probiotics such as LactoB yet? Diarrhoea can definitely be a side effect of antibiotic therapy due to the gut flora being wiped out. I *think* nausea is also a side effect, but my (human) pharmacy is pretty rusty.  :-[ Alternatively maybe the vomiting is down to dehydration or electrolyte imbalance from the diarrhoea?

Franta was on the lacto B for about 6 months and everytime I stopped it the problem came back and in his case it was definately the abs that did it.

There is no reason not to keep them on the lacto B unless the problem is totally continuous, in which case it must be a problem.

Franta had to go back on the abs a number of times and each time I restarted the lacto B if he wasnt on it already.

They're both now on a course of metronidazole, the faecal results came back negative  but there is obviously something going and it seems to be a vicious circle with one of them getting better then the other possibly passing it back. Riley has Hills I/D and sensitive duck RC to try and Lu is going to stick with the RC sensitive chicken.

I asked about blood tests but she said that there are no other clinical signs that would indicate something going on so to have them on sensitive food, antibiotics and probiotics and as long as they are still happy/eating to leave it a week before we re-assess.

I was just looking for sensitive food for Alice. I just ordered a bag of Arden Grange chicken & rice sensitive from VetUK and thought of the boys. I know they always say chicken & rice for dodgy tums + it has the vitamins etc. (£9.69 for 2.5kg  :) )

You must be worn out, Helen. :'(

How many antibiotic free days have there been in those two weeks? I haven't the foggiest how long a veterinary antibiotic injection is supposed to last. :shy: Blood levels are usually talked about in terms of the half life - the time it takes for the concentration to reduce by half - so there will still be a residual amount of antibiotic for hours or days with a long-acting formulation.

If the residual amount is still a therapeutic dose the probiotic bacteria won't take a hold. Furthermore there may well be inflammation/ damage to the gut lining after being poorly for so long. Not saying that the antibiotics are the sole cause as I am not a vet, just that they may well be a contributory factor (a necessary evil). As you say it is quite possible they are passing an infection back and forth, for some reason some nasties repopulate the gut faster than the good guys.  >:(

The food arrived today. If you want me to send you a bit to try, PM me. It smells very meaty - sort of Iams-like - it even looks like Iams - it is possibly the same as PAH  :shify:. Ingredients are chicken, rice, corn & chicken fat + vitamins

Alice took to it straight away - hopefully it wasn't a one-off.

A little update, they've been on their oral anti-biotics since Tuesday evening and both boys have had normal poos today :chicken: Lucas is quite easy to give tablets to as he just freezes, he hates it but it doesn't take long and is a necessary evil. Riley on the other hand is a different story and impossible to pill but he is luckily very greedy and has been eating the tablets rolled up in some wafer thin ham  :naughty: He did wretch as if to be sick earlier but hoping it was just a one-off and not connected to the recent vomiting.

Thanks for the offer Mark  I'm hoping to wean the boys back onto their normal food once I've had a few more days of normal poos but it was very sweet of you to think of them

Everything still going to plan, almost don't want to say it out loud as both times I spoke to the vet and said they were better they relapsed big time less than 24 hours later!

Anyone know how long I should leave them on the sensitive food before I try and wean them back onto normal stuff?

Edit: They have one more dose of metronidazole tomorrow morning if that makes a difference.
