I have it on good authority that a new rule will come into effect soon, that if someone has pedigrees then only ONE animal can be registered with them.
a good move methinks.....
-
Very difficult one !
Ok.....
Lets say Mr and Mrs Smith have 3 old aged pedigree cats . Mr Smith looses his job that he has had for 30yrs ....
Fair that only one of their cats can be treated ?
I certainly don't agree that a new animal should be brought into a family that already have financial problems
-
Humm possibly sell the other ped's to gain the money back? thats the only other option being presented that I can see :-:
-
don't know the full rules but it will certainly deter some of the bsb's
i think they could extend it to not allowing un neutered animals to be registered.
-
What happens if someone has pedigree rescue cats then?

dunno - will see.
it will certainly stop the yoiks with the 3 yorkie who breed from them and have a posh range rover from using up charitable resources...

Is pdsa assistance means tested?

yes, you have to be in receipt of some benefit (a pity it doesn't apply to breeding!)
-
Yes its a shame that "additional income" does not get included *sigh*
-
It shouldn't make any difference whether the cat is a pedigree or not - what's that got to do with anything?

Sell an adult pedigree cat? It's hard enough to rehome any adult cat (inc pedigrees) without trying to get money for them.
-
I can sort of see the logic behind not allowing additional ones to be registered if you are already with them, as if you have a few hundred pounds to spend on a pedigree you could have spent that on vet bills for the existing animal, but dont think it should apply if you already own them and then your circumstances change.

some active breeders are registered with the PDSA

No PDSA in these parts but they do a lot of fundraising, now I know why.

As far as I can remember all the benefits that make you eligible for PDSA assistance are means-tested. Savings and additional income from breeding will be taken into consideration - providing the income is properly declared of course If not we get into tax evasion and benefit fraud territory which is not exactly in the jurisdiction of the PDSA.
How could you prove someone has a pedigree? All they need to do is say it is a cross breed, say three quarters Yorkie. I agree the PDSA should insist all animals treated are neutered. If Mr. Smith has been working in the same job for thirty years there is a fair chance he won't have any dependent children and Mrs. Smith may well have a part time job. That means there is a fair chance Mr. and Mrs. Smith won't be entitled to any means tested benefits - so could not use the PDSA for at least six months (until he migrates from CB-JSA to IB-JSA). :shify:

Well that's a whole different ball game, isn't it?!
I can understand if they mean they won't help out if someone has spent hundreds of pounds on a pedigree and then expect the pdsa to foot the vet bill, but only if it's recent. Not if someone already has a pedigree and then their circumstances change. Besides, you don't know how much someone paid for a pedigree anyway - it could be a rescue or an adult bought for less than a kitten would sell for or even paid for by someone else (as a birthday present or something). Basically, you can't assume that someone has been spending money recently on buying a cat just because they own a pedigree.

and how exactly can you prove a cat is pedigree?

Perhaps they should introduce a rule that anybody who owns a plasma tv should only be able to register one pet. Or those who have had a holiday within the past 12 months..... ;)
-
I do think it an odd rule. Something needs to be done to stop abuse of their services but I'm not sure this is it.
I have used the PDSA once. You have to be in receipt of housing and/or council tax benefits and you take your letter of award with you, it can't be more than 6 months old. That's all the checking they do. So you can use them if you are not on JSA but are on a low income. As far as I know, if you're a homeowner and are claiming JSA you're stuffed because you're not entitled to housing benefit!

I have two pedigree rescues with papers and cost me nothing cos lady just wanted them rehomed.............could never afford to buy one.

Very interesting and i think its a good idea although a few gunuine people will suffer. They are also refusing to caesar certain breeds of dog i think (they arent supposed to do any caesars but they wont see an anmal suffer, also coventry branch)
