Title: How much Urine do your cats produce?
Post by: Den on September 10, 2010, 17:31:33 PM
I know, I know. You all read the title and are a bit like  :-: and

Yesterday I got up and left realllllly early and came home reallllllly late. So Memphis had his great grampy babysitting him. Which basically means he would have been a bit grouchy yesterday. He loves his great
grampy. Molly loves him even more and due to her size she always wangles the attention by bouncing her way around. That makes Memphy jealous.

So I got home, very tired and didn't give anyone much attention - which must have upset King Memphis. I dragged myself upstairs all ready to get into bed and noticed my room
had an eau de wee odour  :tired: I found the source .. He had urinated on the spare duvet which has been on my floor all week (when I had my horrible cold/bad back I discovered the floor was much more comfy ... So I     got a spare duvet and made a little camp lol complete with numerous episodes of Bones).

It was verrrrrrrrry fresh. So I get he was not a happy chappy as it happened after I came home. What shocked me is that a herd of elephants would be proud if they produced that amount of wee. There was A LOT!! I'm still trying to figure out where he kept it all.

Thing is he does tend to wee just once a day and his oko clumps are always huge and VERY heavy. Just seeing the amount that was on the duvet shocked me as it what just a different way of seeing things (he always uses his tray - and I know it was behavioural as he was very grouchy last night, avoided me this
am and is now creeping - plus there is a fresh wee clump in his clean tray).

Well as everyone always likes good discussion on Purrs it has got me thinking what is 'normal/average' when it comes to the volume of cat wee?

Several hundred litres here daily, or it least seems like it :lol2:

"Re: How much Urine do your cats produce?"

How long is a streak of Pish?  :evillaugh:

Hard to tell really. Clapton does loads - but he is CRF. Kylie pees outside as well as in. Alice usually does 2 or 3 smallish ones. Probably 1/4 pint a day on average - hard to tell as it is OKO clumps. I suppose they are like us and it depends on intake etc. I would get kidneys check to be safe though.

I think Poot does massive wees, he seems to do 1-2 large ones per day I think

I'm just shocked at how much their little bladders can hold. Memphis does get very heavy towards the end of the day and after his wee is so much lighter. Seeing how soiled the duvet was I could have sworn the dog did it if I didn't know any better. Honestly, I never knew cats produced that much (and I've worked in 1 cattery and 1 rescue + cattery = plenty of litter trays).

Most of mine do smallish wees - several through the day and night I guess, the only one that does huge wees is Sasha who has CRF, and Sam also used to, and he had the start of CRF too.

Memphys problem is he holds it in until he has to go. I don't have a clue how you can get a cat to go more frequently. He's always been like this. I know it's not good to hold it in, but that's Memphy for you  :tired:

Sweetie on diuretics 3 full grit boxes worth - the rest of the Clan contribute in the other 28 trays - and folks wonder why we empty our septic tank every 2 years for the other stuff

Noah's OKO clumps seem about right for his size, tho we do have the occasional mega-pee. He almost always pees right before a poop - cue relocation to fresh tray :tired: - which accounts for the twice daily routine. I always think it sounds like he is producing more than he actually does.  :-[

It probably seems like a lot more without anything to clump it.  It would just spread out over the duvet looking like an enormous amount.  Jaffa does tend to do fewer larger wees than Mosi who does slightly smaller ones but probably does at least one extra per day.  Hard to judge the size but Jaffa's clumps are bigger than Mosi's clumps.

Has anyone else noticed their cats going at certain times of day?  I find that both Jaffa and Mosi will do 2 or even 3 wees within the space of a few hours in the morning but then when I get home from work the tray is often unused.  Jaffa will often get up for a wee about 5-5.30am and will also do another one before I leave for work at 7.30am.  Then he tends not to do another one til teatime.  Then after teatime we'll have another round of wees and poos and then no activity for the rest of the evening until maybe bedtime

95% of the time he goes between 10pm and 11pm. He has a nasty habit of doing really stinky poops 10mins after I get into bed. They are the type that make the entire house smell ... I sleep with the door slightly open so he can get in and out so - it isn't very nice.

It doesn't take a lot of fluid to make something sodden... as an experiment, measure 10 mils of water and poor it on a tea towel.  :innocent:

Jess is totally the same as Memphis. He'll only wee 1-2 times a day and they are huge, I'll often listen to him go and it goes on for ages

Milo however produces smaller puddles thoughout the day.

I agree with Mark, it is difficult to tell.

But I know my cousin said Ember has worryingly long pees when she goes. Because Madam only relieves herself a couple of times a day (Ember, not my cousin ;)) she's in there for a while....

Mind, she has a slight toilet obsession. (Again, the cat, not the human...) If the other two cats come out without covering their doings she bops them on the head and marches in to cover it herself.

Astryd and Darwin seem to "produce less" than Sage. But I think she solely uses the litter tray and they go in the garden too.

Purrs makes me laugh with it's discussions sometimes. :)

Another example is with a cut when you think you are bleeding to death and have probably only lost a thimble full of blood  :evillaugh:

Yes, and its usually just after I've cleaned all the trays  :tired: :evillaugh:

  Same here.  Sometimes I find myself scooping 3 or 4 times in quick succession early evening as they use it as soon as I've scooped.
