I know I don't post on here very often but I really need some positive vibes for my 3 year old cat Leo, hes currently at the emergency vets on a drip with acute renal failure with a 50/50 chance of survival. I'm absolutely devastated and cant believe that some :censored: has intentionally poisoned him and what makes it worse is that it probably happened while we were on holiday. We returned to find him off colour, but we thought he had most likely had a bird and just had stomach ache.. but he kept drinking a lot and wouldn't touch his food so we took him to the vets thinking it could be a blockage. The vet wasn't sure so conducted a full blood profile which showed raised kidney enzymes and the vet suspects anti freeze is the cause :censored: :censored: so please please send lots of vibes and pray for his recovery i really cant believe this can be happening

:thanks: everyone for the kind words, it still doesn't seem real as i really cant imagine anyone intentionally doing something like this but then i am a cat lover. They are keeping him at the vets for 24-48hrs on a drip to see if they can improve his kidney function and more importantly get him to eat, if he doesn't eat well you can guess the rest :'( I will ring in the morning for an update.
Please please Leo get well we all miss you :wish:

Hi all just got back from the vets Leo is slightly better today and has been transferred to his regular vets. He is still on a drip and the vet wants to keep him on one for another 24hrs and then re check his bloods. He managed to eat a little whilst we were there and has weed on one of the nurses when she lifted him out of his carrier :) The vet has been totally honest and if it is due to poisoning then he wont pull through if on the other hand it is due to an infection or a virus then there is every chance he will be ok albeit with some kidney defect but hay i will take that. So the plan is to check his bloods and then take him off his drip and see how he goes without support. So although not out of the woods yet the vet is cautiously optimistic.
I certainly feel better than I did last night and once again many thanks for your support, it means a lot and seems to be working.

Have spoken to the vets, Leo has had a good night and has eaten and drank everything left in his kennel overnight and has used his litter tray. Crunch time will be this evening when we get this mornings blood results back. Just off now to see him and give him a cuddle still keeping everything crossed.

Sounding good -lots of healing vibes still sent from us here for Leo
-
Glad Leo seems to be doing OK, have everything crossed for the blood results tonight
-
Hi blood results back unfortunately his enzymes are still quite high but they have come down slightly. The vet now doesn't think he was poisoned by anti freeze- phew, but thinks it is more likely to be environmental ie some type of plant pollen will try to find out more. I will admit I was hoping for slightly better especially as he looked so well today but the vet was upbeat and did explain that it can take weeks for the levels to come back down. He was taken off the drip this morning and the vet wants to see how he goes overnight and hopefully if he keeps on eating and drinking he maybe able to come home tomorrow. So still not out of the woods yet but certainly better, so a few more positive vibes might just do the trick.

He couldn't have got near any lillies could he? I have known cats get ARF from them. Am glad the vet is realistic with kidney values, and him being fine in himself is the most important thing.
-
:get well:
:L: :E: :O:
Hope Leo is feeling much better soon xx
-
So pleased its not anti=freeze but it could be lilies or something else like that.
I do hope that he keeps on geting better
-
So pleased to hear Leo is doing better. Hope he continues to get better xxxx
-
Any news from today?
-
Leo is finally back home woo hoo :happy dance: and is currently under house arrest much to his disgust. I have borrowed a crate from the vets, installed a litter tray so we can keep an eye on his fluid in take and out put for the next couple of days. The key now is to maintain his appetite as this will help improve his kidney function according to the vets.
I'm not aware of Leo eating any Lilly's but he does have out door access so it is possible the neighbours could have some. If anyone else has any suggestions of what else it could be I would be interested to know.
Once again many thanks for your kind words and positive vibes, they seemed to have done the trick this time :)

So pleased Leo is home
-
glad he is home, hope you get to the bottom of it though

Another possibility is phenols from disinfectants. Apparently any kind of disinfectant that turns milk when water is added is bad - there are also others. There is a story on Fabcat where a woman used Dettol surface cleaner http://www.fabcats.org/owners/poisons/article.html
Not sure if it says in the story but I'm pretty sure it is the clear spray - the supermarket own brand versions are the same as far as I know.
I'm pretty sure the worst one is jeyes fluid as the concentration is so high.
Glad he is back and OK  - has the vet recommended renal food temporarily?
-
Glad he's home  hopefully its down to a kidney infection/virus and he's turned a corner now  Presume he was looked after at home while you were away? did whoever was looking after him mention about his appetite/drinking? Wonder if he pined a bit? stopped eating/drinking and got dehydrated, which would lead to the high kidney values.
-
Thanks for the link Mark that certainly makes for some interesting reading especially the bit about various disinfectants. The vets has recommended a renal diet and we have been given some Royal Canin food, biscuits and meat which I'm pleased to say he seems to like.Hes due to go back to the vets next week but I'm pleased to say so far so good.
-
Keep up the good work Leo
-
Glad to hear that Leo is home, give him a cuddle from me
-

-

-
I'm glad he's home and doing better ;D
Hear hear
-
Leo continues to do well, hes had a wee and a Pooh and is eating small amounts of dry renal biscuits. Hes not impressed with house arrest and continues to pace around the house meowing until he wears himself out and then spends the next couple of hours sleeping. Hes currently gazing out the window as I type and is not at all happy with the situation if only they could talk :)
-
Glad Leo seems to have turned the corner :) How's he been today?
-
Hi Helen thanks for asking :) Leo continues to gain a bit more strength every day and his appetite is slowly returning. Still desperate to get out side though and he has been very vocal in his disapproval tonight.
-
So glad that Leo is home and on the road to recovery xxx
