Title: Lovely Louis (1995- 8th July 2010)
Post by: pandora on July 13, 2010, 12:18:27 PM
It broke my heart to see you lose your home so many times.  So when I took you home that dark November night, I promised that it would be forever.  I just wished it had been for longer but I hope I made your twilight years a life in luxury and comfort.  You spread your calm, gentle and loving nature around the house, made all of us happy and contend to be with you.  Martha loves you and misses you - she only ever liked her brother before you, so this is a high compliment!  Grandad Louis, how patient you were with those 7 kittens they put in your pen but I know your eyes just said:  "Please get me out of here."  So I did to a life of peace and quiet, a garden, an adoring family, your little fan club, your sheep skin bed and plenty of nice treats.  You taught all to drink out of the tap - trained us humans well to turn it on for you.  You were just such a star.  Have a peaceful time at the Bridge- and look out for Lennie. You never met him but you two were so alike in temperament- you would have been best friends.  Martha knows!  Will always keep you in my heart!xxx

Thanks for saying that. Wanted to say some nice words because I volunteer at the rescue I got him from and everybody was passing him by because of his age.  He was 13 then. What people did not see in just a few moments was the gentle nature.  He was not one of those 'in your face' attention seekers.  You had to spent time with him and on my days there I just sat in the pen for ages and eventually he would come up to me.  Taking him home was a spontaneous decision, one evening, but they could see it happening so they said 'yes' without hesitation.  Had just lost my heart on him. He was the easiest introduction, no fuss, got on with everyone (human and feline) and was just great. I am so sorry he only lived another 1 3/4 years since then until a brain tumor took him away.

What a lovely thing you did for him.  Isn't it sad though when no one seems to want them, I always adopt the old, unwanted ones too so I can understand you entirely.   I bet Louis has had the best time spent with you

What a lovely tribute to a lovely boy  The way you describe him as 'calm & gentle' - you can see that in his face  :)

RIP Louis, safe and sound at the Bridge by now, waiting until your Mum is ready to collect you xx

Volunteering is hard. Makes you feel like you want to take all of them home but of course you can't.  But seeing the transformation Louis went through was such a reward.  At the rescue I had to hand feed him because as soon as there was any competition over his food, he would just let anyone take it from him and being with 7 kittens, he never got a look in.  So I sat on the windowsill with him and would take the food and fend off all others for him to have a quiet eating moment. Then one day it was just too much and I just had to take him.  In the first few months of being here, he put on a lot of weight just having his food without competition.  Still needed to assure him as he would step back from the bowl as soon as any of my others approached but he learned that they were not a problem soon.  There isn't anyone who did not like him here.  And from not being comfortable being picked up, he became a soppy ragdoll in my arms.  It is amazing how much they can touch us.  Not sure I can adopt an oldie again though because this has broken my heart (and my throat - just like when Lennie died, I got instant tonsillitis- strange parallel).  But who knows what happens when you volunteer.

Burried Louis in the specialmemorial garden at the rescue he came from.  Right next to Lennie and under trees and planted some more flowers.  It's completion.  Everyone was upset-he was that popular!  He was a special boy.  Then I toured around as I had not been there for a while and saw hundreds of new desperate little faces looking for a home.  It is never ending.

Thanks for the hugs.  My little Martha is really depressed because of Louis not being with us any more.  Have bought Feliway to create a chilled atmosphere.  She is marginally better but it is making me sad.
