Trying to trap a mum and 4 kits we have so far got mum and a male cat that was following her around.
Romeo went straight in to be castrated and tested. he handled quite well this morning when we were checking him out, but the vets tell me he has been getting more and more 'restless' as the day has gone on.
He's now in a pen here.
So, being as he tested FIV+ , What's his future going to hold in store?
I suppose I will have to assess how well he will cope in an indoor environment and make a decision then. :(
What would other rescues do with him?
Juliet will also need testing when she gets spayed. At the moment she's filling up with milk and not a kitten in sight - can't believe the pilchards are going to fail! (apparently they were in and out of the trap yesterday evening eating with gusto but not setting the thing off)
-
If you neuter to stop aggression, roaming etc, could you not release him back into the feral community? Assuming he's been around for a while, he won't pose any more of a threat than before he was tested?
Obviously if he could be homed to an indoor environment that would be great, or an enclosed garden or similar, but in case he can't, I wonder if that could be a possibility?
AFter all, how many FIV+ cats are out there already that we don't know about?
-
Our rescue will neuter and look for either indoor homes (if its thought the cat would adapt to indoors) or to a home where the garden is cat proofed, or a cat run.
I've been reading a lot about FIV since fostering Chico, these iare good sites - sensible advice - http://www.gla.ac.uk/faculties/vet/cad/informationforowners/felineimmunodeficiencyvirusfiv/ and http://www.v63.net/catsanctuary/fiv.html
-
Gillian that first site is very good, at last some sensible info on FIV
-
I'd give him some time to settle before judging character, he may well turn into a soppy lump once his hormones have gone
-
Well having been the very proud Mother of 2 FIV Ferals - Miss Hissy Holly who came for Christmas and stayed 9 glorious months and died 5 weeks after moving with us and then Sadly Sailor who we tamed and homed on with his siter Amber who both came back to us when their parents lost their home he was 7 when he died in my arms - he was unhandlable his while life until the last 8 weeks when he suddenly becma eindoor/outdoor and loved to have his chin stroked.
Ours were house cats at our choice and mixed with the then 37 members of the Clan and we had no transfer - we know for deffo at Oct 2008 as we lost a rescue cat Gem to FIP and had them all tested and all were negative - have to say all the newbies have been tested and all were negative but I know that it wouldn't have made any diference by then they were named and Clan cats and would have styed - Sailors sisiter is negative and always has been - she is now 8
Outside ferals do adapt to home lfe as long as they have friends - we have indoor only cats mainly ferals who are like one big colony and welcome any newcomers - I sadly have more probs with the dogs who want to be their friends and end up getting shredded when they try the first couple of times to sniff rear ends! Have to say all my ferals adore the dogs now and some still have nore isues with the humans!!!
-
Just returned with the 4th kitten! he/she has been keeping away from the trap after catching the 3 siblings yesterday.
Took two of the kits back in a carrier at 7pm after the fundraiser and call at 10pm to say we had caught the little blighter.
So we now have mum, dad(?), and 4 kittens - oh yes, all black!

aww he looks real sad :(
-
They are all stunners, good luck with them
-
Well done catching them all, Angie and good luck finding homes for them. They are all gorgeous! :Luv2: :Luv2:
-
OMG what a GOEGEOUS :Luv: :Luv: :Luv: :Luv: Family xxxx
-
Well what can I say about Romeo?
Cleaning his pen out is a right nightmare.
All he wants is fuss, fuss , fuss, to be groomed and have his tummy rubbed. Using a pooper scooper results in poo everywhere as he headbutts everything in sight. :Luv2:
Juliet was spayed tuesday and is FIV negative. Romeo went up to her cage yesterday and gave her a good face washing.
:Luv2:
The terrible four are slowly getting better.
-
Gorgeous :Luv2: :Luv: :Luv2: :Luv:
-
He is a stunner Angie, well done for helping him and his brood.
My Biscuit was trapped as a 'feral' but is the soppiest thing on four legs.
best of luck with them all

He doesn't sound like a feral !

What a lovely little family! Romeo sounds much tamer than my "semi" feral Squeak, i can only stroke him when hes got no way of getting away from me! Hope you find homes for them all
-
Well , took my eye off the ball spending too much time with Alfie.
Went in to put foster cats to bed and one of the kittens was all limp and floppy.
Judith and I rushed to Emergency vet with mum and kits.
little floppy ones temp was too low to register but we gave fluids, aBs and steroid. She died shortly after getting home when I was sorting out heat pad.
Others have a high temp, all not eating. I hope we've caught them in time and no one else gets "it". (especially little Alfie)
Thought mum felt hot this morning when I had her at vets to take stitches out (different vet), I should have asked them to take her temperature - always go with instincts... :(
-
RIP little one :( Have everything crossed that the other babies can pull through

-
Poor little souls :(
And I echo Teresa's wishes for the rest of the family.
:wish:
-
Well, we still have 2 kittens - didn't expect it last night 'cos the girl was not too good, but she's hanging in there and we (Jill) are still giving her fluids and also tried her on a few mls of convalescence food which she wasn't too keen on - we've even given her a few doses of Synulox.
Boy is fine and in fact got out of the pen this morning when i went to fetch something and spent some time playing with Romeo.
Still, one day at a time and fingers crossed.
-
Well a trip to the vet yesterday with both kittens for comparison and today with the poorly one.
Both times I was sent back with her as 'miracles do happen' after fluids, steroids and abs.
Jill spoke to vet this afternoon and they agreed that if the little one was to make it, she would need subcut fluids every few hours so at 2 pm I took a very poorly kitten to Jill. I did phone her up to say I had concerns that the little one wouldn't make the 10 min journey but we agreed that if she was going to die she would and if she had any chance of being saved she was better with Jill.
The poor thing passed peacefully about an hour later.
-
So sorry to read this. Sendng love to you and Jill, you are both doing an amazing job.
-
:'(
-
I am sorry; RIP Kitten 3.
-
So sorry Angie, and Jill. Sorry Mummy cat, your foster Mum and her helpers really did try for your babies.
-
Angie so sorry for your losses - we have all paws crossed here at the Clan for the rest
-
I am sorry to hear you have lost another one - have you had mum tested yet? RIP little one
-
So sorry for your loss. Fingers and paws crossed for the remaining little bundle.
-
So sorry
-
I`m hoping no news means you are busy feeding them up and that recovery is in sight.
-
Oh no - I am so sorry
RIP little one - have fun at the Bridge sweetie xxx

Romeo, Juliet and the surviving kitten, junior (a girl I think!) are all doing well.
Due to their boredom I have taken a hacksaw to the pen and cut a hole between two levels (also sliced through one of the floor supports without thinking :-[).
Romeo and Juliet are enjoying each others company and Junior is of playing on the lower level.
After all they've been through I would love to find them an indoor home together.
Mum tested negative for FIV when she was spayed a couple of weeks ago but we will need to get the test repeated to be sure.

Brilliant news.
-
Rome, Juliet and Junior continue to do well. Junior is still not taming down but then I hardle have any time to do anything with them apart from the basics.
Just put Romeo on his own as there's been a bit of growling from the pen and I think he is bored and picking on Juliet.
-
It must be hard for rescue to "entertain" all the little ones and i worry about a cat proofed garden!
Looks like ya doing a grand job hun and i know when they all have wonderful homes they will thank ya forever. :Luv:
-
Which one's peering through the bars? Bossy looking feline, that one is!
-
These have just come back from my second vet visit as Romeo has caught the kitten bug and has runny eyes, wet nose and at the moment is sneezing. Vet says chest OK, glands slightly swollen and it sounds like URI and he has had a long lasting ab jab.
Juliet and Portia (now named, a little girl) were pronounced healthy and started on vaccinations.
Pen scrubbed and cleaned. All back in.
Next job to clean out the kitten room and all the spilt litter. Then bath and next feed for bottle ones (will be overdue by then!).
Just come on for a breather.
-
Went in this morning and Juliets eyes are half glazed over - popped in one of garage cats mums ab's in.
-
Sending some good vibes
-
Sending you loads of get well vibes, hope they will be OK
-
Come on you two, get better!
-
Sending lots of these over
-
Well Romeo looks the picture of health this morning though I really don't believe it to continue.
Juliet is still looking poorly though her eyes are a bit better and now portia is deffo got it as she is snuffling and one eye is weepy.
Just debating if to take them to vets this pm or tomorrow.
Couldn't believe it, last night Katie one of the 10 year olds was sneezing a bit but I am hopeful that aat 10 and being fully vacced it will not come to anymore.
-
Angie just a thought, would it be less stressful on the cats and easier for you if your vet came to you. I arrange regular visits with mine when several need seeing and just go to surgery with small numbers and ops.

with the vets round here?
T, you seem to have a saint of a vet, very rare keep hold of them and make sure you bung them the odd cake!
