Title: Litter tray manners
Post by: Susanne (urbantigers) on June 26, 2010, 12:29:34 PM
Watching Jaffa and Mosi in the litter tray this morning, I was amused by the difference in their approach to covering up.  Now Jaffa doesn't usually cover but sometimes he does.  This morning he did a wee, stepped out of the tray and gave it a sniff to determine whether he should cover or not.  He decided he did, and out came a paw and he did 4 careful and very accurate swipes of the litter which covered everything perfectly and scattered nothing outside of the tray.  When Mosi has covered, the bathroom is covered in litter and there is a mountain in the middle of the tray (not necessarily where he went) and little litter left in the rest of the tray  :shify:  How do yours cover?

Pepsi generally doesn't, or if she does she does a few delicate little swipes and looks very dignified about it. Darcy acts as if he's digging to China, covers the floor and spends ages in there but he does manage to do a good job!

SKy doesn't cover - well, she scratches everything other than the litter really.  If she does cover I'm sure it's an accident.  Robbie's another who spends ages making mountains and ensuring everything is totally covered up.  He needs to teach Sky how to do it!

Wees get puddled on the top of the litter, right by the entrance. Poops get left on top of the litter at the back then he stands outside the tray, puts his head in and 'digs' the air, sides and ceiling of the litter tray. If I don't clean it up before his next toilet he will go in dig everything furiously to cover it all up, then do his business on top and repeat the air/side digging.

Neither of mine cover.  Byron doesn't even really scratch, Pepper scratches lots but never covers it - probably because he's blind.

Dave digs furiously for a few seconds, does his business, then repeats furious digging, all the while making a right mess despite it being a covered tray with a door. He then steps out bringing a shed load of litter with him :tired:

Chilli goes then does a lot of front of the tray scratching and even sticks her head out the door and scratches the rubber mat in front. The time since last complete litter change determines the length of time she does this ritual.  Towards the end of the litter's life, right before I'm about to change it, she'll scratch away for ages, to the point I sometimes have to go ind gently move her away because the noise is driving me potty!

The birmans dont cover at all and Misa on the odd occasion he uses a tray covers everything and anything and every scrap of litter ends up in a pile in the middle of the tray, if its not on the floor!

Bless my little boy. I was just walking across the landing from one room to another, when I noticed he was having a wee. I stopped so I didn't disturb him. Whilst he was having the biggest wee ever a little fly landed on the outside of his poo box. When he finished he just stopped and froze (in his box, facing towards the back) then all of an sudden lept out, chased, caught and ate the fly. So yup, he doesn't cover wees - he's too busy.

Noah doesn't usually cover wees, just leaps out of the tray like he has been burned! This is usually followed by the 'funny five minutes': sometimes he wees with only his back half in the (large) tray which looks amusing. Poops he digs to Australia beforehand and buries equally carefully when done, sometimes he returns to the tray a few minutes later to check for smells, twice I have seen him get back in and re-bury a real stinker.

on the other hand baby Rosie digs for 5 minutes before and again for 5 minutes after . leaving mountains of litter over her "treasure" so no one can find it. She even went in the litter tray after Haggis yesterday and covered his for him !!!! :evillaugh: :evillaugh: :evillaugh:

Our first cat Penny used to do that with our Squeaky, he never covered and she was meticulous she dusted everywhere all round the area outside the tray too!  and when he'd been in she'd go in after tidy up then get out and give him a swipe  :naughty: maybe it's a female thing  ;)  :evillaugh:
