Title: help please - picked up a cat yesterday -she has just gone for me !
Post by: bunglycat on June 06, 2010, 17:21:05 PM
I was told about a lady who had a persian cat she didn''t have time for any more -so i rang the lady and she felt she couldn''t give her the attention she needed , so i decided to go and fetch her and see how she would get on with mine.
She is 2 years old and the people had her from a kitten , she is PKD negative and spayed -a smoke tortie.
SHe was as good as gold in the car last night and i have put her in the spare room.
She was ok last night and today she has played a little -but she keeps hissing at me and all of a sudden for no apparent reason she ran at me mouth open and hissing- a little ball of fury !
What shall i do -just ignore her ?

Maybe she's just scared? After all there's the fight or flight mechanism in every animal, she's just gone for the second one. Give her time.

yeah, I would give her time, she is in unfamiliar surroundings / people
as JS says, it's a Fight or Flight thing

Olivia took ages to settle in ( about 4 months till she was totally relaxed and confident with us )

just take each day at a time, She'll soon come round  ;)

P.S. Lot's of Treats is the answer  :evillaugh:

I agree with the others, she just needs time to get used to you and the different surroundings, must all be a bit strange to her at the moment (not that I'm saying your strange or anything LOL!)  :evillaugh: I'm sure she'll come round

She probably came at you cuz you smelt funny (not questioning your personal hygiene in any way hun).  If your two had been rubbing on you or your clothes she will have smelt that and obviously taken offence!  I know it might sound a bit strange but if you've got some catnip spray in the house you could give yourself a quick squirt on your hands then rub them down your jeans ... this will make you smell more appealing and might encourage madam to come over and give you a it of a rub. Of course you have to be careful that she isn't the type that goes all loopy on catnip and turns into a ball of dribbling claws and teeth!  :evillaugh:

Well, i can''t tempt with treats as she hasn''t eaten anything at all yet.

I got her papers and have rung her breeder tonight -suprise suprise -i wasn''t told the truth -nor was she .

I was told she had no time for her -she told her breeder she was rehoming as she was scratching all the furniture and she couldn''t cope as she was ruining the house !?
I picked her up and admittingly i wasn''t there long -but it appeared they had a brand new leather suite and everywhere looked immaculate -but i never saw a scratching post anywhere !?
So , the breeder wasn''t very happy that she had lied -also wondering if the little girl (3 when they got the cat) had maybe pulled her about /shouted at her or could have even smacked her - i suppose no-one will ever know that .
The breeder had her back once when they went on holiday for a fornight and said she hissed for 3-4 days when she was back there and then settled in fine.
She also said -if she had told her she wasn''t happy she would have taken the cat back !!??

Picture of said "devil cat "

Ah bless her, she is a typical tortie im afraid and will take some time to come around, was she with other cats where you have just got her from or an only cat ? Hopefully she will come around but she may not be used to other cats ? if this is the case then she may smell yours on your clothing. Not all cats are cat friendly !!! I know this from experience  :crossed:  she is ok with other cats if not I can take her in to my rescue and re home her as an only cat.See how she goes

Poor girl she looks so lovely.  Obviously something worrying her, sounds like she needs someone to work with her consistently, I'm sure they'll get there in time but may take a long time.

She was absolutely fine with her owners - they said they were only rehoming as they were at work all day and even though she got loads of attention when they came home -she had them up all night scratching on the doors and waking their 5 year old daughter up.
I ask if they shut the doors at night and they said no -she would do it and on the side iof the bed .
We have suggested putting her in the kitchen /room and closing the door or putting her in a big crate , just at night whilst they sleep .
I just hope they don''t rehome again !!!
