Title: new foster pics- scaredy cat emerges!
Post by: snarf on May 31, 2010, 19:47:48 PM
well only a little bit but progress  :shify:

think i caught him as he was thinking of venturing out so i sat facing away from him and had a chat for bout half hour. went well i think, he was content to close his eyes and lay his head down so i think hes getting the picture that im safe and im not going to grab at him. Cant wait to be able to touch him, he has a beautiful (if still unkempt! ) coat  :Luv:
i was listing him his possible names-

shadow - as he keeps impersonating one but dont want to give the impression hes mean
mr mistoffelees - who is black and white and magician (vanishes) but its abit of a mouthful
ben/ tom - just cos i like them as names
any better ideas? im abit slow on names

Barnacles.

I like Barnacles as it can be shortened to Barney for the more normal conservative cat owners.  That said Mop is an ace name, he could be paired up with 'bucket' cat  :evillaugh:

why is it that you can bribe a cat to do anything with ham?
the last few days hes been sleeping on top of the bed and mostly staying there when im in the room as long as i dont come to close (occasionally dissapearing off under the bed)
last night came in with some ham, expecting the usual treatment but he came to sit next to me to get all the ham and then licked my finger clean  ;D
this morning he jumped of the bed and disapeared underneath when i came in but slowly came out when i opened a tin of food and ate in front of me,but still wary. then when hed finished, he just changed, he literally looked up and came over to see what other food i had (and of course got treats) ive been allowed to stroke him and get a better look at him and apparently it has been decided that i might be ok ;D so here are some better pics.

now i can actually see him though- his skins in awful condition, very dry and scaly in parts. lots of old scabs- no flea dirt so whatever they washed him in has cleared him- is there anything i can feed him or do for him to help his skin along? it must be uncomfortable. maybe oily fish?

also one of his eyes is watering and he did sound snuffly for a few mins. eye is not gunky, it literally looks like a tear drop. cat flu? he isolated already and i wash my hands after ive been in to him but is there anything else i should be doing if he does have cat flu? or is it more likely to be something in his eye. i dont want to panic too much because i could go up in half an hour and find it gone and he has been checked over by a vet already (who didnt mention cold/catflu)

ETA- is it possible that hes less wary because of the hormones reducing- he was neutered last sat. something on another thread got me thinking.

 :Luv2: :Luv2: hes sooo handsome!!
His coat will improve with his new diet but you can supplement it, i got gooey a bottle from vet uk called efavet, its omega 3 & 6 and vitamins. He has been having it for about 10 days and i can see an improvement  ;D its a pump spray so easier than trying to pierce gelatin capsules  ;)

im quite smitten with him too  :Luv2: hes very gentle and sweet too now hes come out from under the bed :Luv2: ill have to get a better photo of his tail- its amazing  :Luv:

he was  called in as a stray last saturday and taken to the out of hours vets, he was bathed to rid him of an apparently considerable flea infestation and neutered. the vet said that hes thin but not dangerously so, someone probably fed him and that hes basically healthy apart from his skin which they believe is down to the fleas and should clear up given time.  i completely forgot to ask his age but hes either fairly young or hes a very small framed cat- hes about the size lucifer was when he was about a year old. ill ask my coordinator for more details.  hes not in the slightest bit aggressive. hes not made a noise yet and hes not sure whether he likes me touching him yet so id guess hes not used to having a home but hes used to living where there are people nearby- ill try to find out where he was collected from.

his eye was dry when i went in last but started tearing after hed had some ham and a little stroke- could it be a reaction to something? im not wearing any chemicals but i have been out in the garden all day so am probably covered in pollen. or some sort of stress response?

Does anyone else experience physical reactions whenever stress factors are removed?  Perhaps peeps think me a crazy cat lady  :innocent: but....

Both me and my younger brother have regular spells of slight illnesses after being stressed.  With me it's dermatitis on hands and my brother comes down with colds (sore throat, sneezing etc).

I'm quite convinced that our Freddie's skin disorder that comes and goes (treated with fuciderm gel on and off) is also stress related and tends to trouble him more after he has calmed down following a stress related incident.

Not sure what a tearing eye might denote but suggest you watch for signs of possible infection in SBPP.  My brother is having problems atm with an insurance claim for one of his gingers who has tested positive for calici virus as M&S are saying medical records suggest ginger had it many years before he tested positive.  I think they are referring to signs of a cold when he was very young.  I only mention it in case Rescue arrange insurance cover  :shify:

im not sure i know him well enough to call him
Scruff Buff Powder Puff

plus it might be abit too feminine straight after loosing the danglies...

thanks Rosella,  :shy: what is SBPP and what are the signs? im not very experienced in the serious virus stuff

How is our gorgeous chap this morning?

Oh dear, didn't mean to worry you   SBPP stands for Scruff Buff Powder Puff  :)

I wouldn't say Calici virus is that "serious" but a cat that has it gets recurring cold symptoms so tends to need to have more frequent vet visits.  I only mentioned it in case rescue arrange insurance but can well understand if they don't.  I wouldn't worry about a watery eye (may be stress related) but need to watch for signs of infection like discharge becoming yellowy?   Do you have any Zylkene capsules?  I bought in a load of them to help with Freddie's peeing activities in case stress related.  I could send you a pack if you like.  They're only a supplement and no known side effects.  Just sprinkle on food.  Taste doesn't seem to bother cats.

Oh dear Millie's cat bed just fell off top of wardrobe... with her in it  :scared:  She seems fine though  :phew:

Post by: Desley (booktigger) on June 06, 2010, 10:27:43 AM
There was a member on here iwth a cat called Sylvester, it was shortened to Vesti.

I would just monitor his eye for now, it can take up to two weeks for things like cat flu to show, hence isolation being so important, and stress can bring it out. I think Herpes causes runny eyes more than Calici. If he is a bit snuffly, you could try using an oil burner with eucalyptus while you are sat in with him, or if you dare risk moving him, put him in the bathroom with the shower on for a bit of a steam bath.

Vesti was Nikkis cat, I believe.

This boy's lovely. Glad he's coming round, even if it's for ham. ;)

to update

im thinking of calling him " Ham", its probably what he thinks his name is by now given how much time i spend pleading Ham? while waving slivers at his hastily departing fluffy bottom....

he was doing much better than something (no idea what) spooked him for thurs- today and i wasnt allowed to come into the room without him off under bed. today he gave up and even stood both front paws on my legs to reach the ham ( and there might have been a little purr  ;D although it might have been a burp)

his eye seems better, i cant clean it well enough to be 100% but i dont think theres gunk. hes started mewing at the door to the spare room the last few nights, only after its dark in the house though and he has a really quiet, soft little mew  :Luv2:

Ham's as good a name as any  :Luv2:

Glad he's coming around a bit.  Slowly but surely by the sound of it.  Keep up the good work.

I somtimes give Bonnie slices of turkey or chicken but she always drinks a lot of water after so it might be a good idea to put a bowl of water near where he's hiding if he gets thirsty like my Bonnie does. But don't start calling him water   :Luv2:

Oh MY, he is a gorgeous boy! I think Ham is a fun name too, suits him.
If he has got a cold/flu you could try L-lysine to deal with the virus, otherwise just keep an eye on him to make sure it does not worsen. Vets will sometimes give a shot of steroid to calm inflammation and antibiotics to deal with any secondary bacterial infection.
For his coat....Evening primrose oil is very calming for irritated skin, fish oils such as salmon oil ( not cod liver oil ) can also be given daily as a natural anti inflammatory and will help him grow a nice plush coat. These can both be bought in Holland and Barratt, I know capsules are a bit of a pain but oils in spary bottles can go rancid quickly, also vet products are often over priced!
More pics please......he is worth looking at! Hmm...where in the country is your rescue based?
Title: Re: new foster pics- scaredy cat emerges!
Post by: snarf on June 18, 2010, 19:11:10 PM
evening primrose oil and/or salmon oil in the food? is just any alright or are certain strengths/amounts/brands better? things that are a pain are fine, as long as theyre safe thats the important thing isnt it. i have some 500mg evening primrose oil at home but it also has vitamin E?
hes not showing any cold/flu symptoms any more- breathing ok, eyes, nose clear so i think hes fine at least for now- is it likely to have been brought on by stress? if hes a carrier of something will he still be shedding virus? hes isolated from mine and im washing my hands etc

pictures dont do him justice, and i just cant get a half decent pic of his fluffy tail. i cant wait til (if!) hes happy for me to groom him  :Luv2: his coat looks black and white in pics (and when he first arrived) but i think its mostly this lovely dark chocolate colour on his body and black on his face :Luv2: hes not available yet but when he is, hes with AARU in notts.

Yes add the oils to food...if he will eat it ok. I sometimes add the dose to a teaspoon of creme fraiche as an irresistible bribe. Remember though that dairy and salmon oil can be a bit laxative so go easy! I add a small capsule of salmon oil, and maybe a larger one of Evening primrose, vit E is fine too. Smaller doses over a period of time are obviously better than too much too quickly. Yes, quality does vary between brands but TBH I think Holland and Barratt is just fine for cats.
He really is a stunner, I love his markings. ( must not get another cat, must NOT )

Ooooh the new cat is gorgeous  :Luv2: he should find a loving home quickly if you don't become a failed fosterer!  :evillaugh:  Sounds like he likes the five star service at this hotel!

Essential fatty acids are definitely worth a shot, I give Noah oily fish as I am a strong believer in whole foods. Pets at Home Purely in the small tins is reasonably priced and complete; even cheaper is Feline Fayre in the large tins which they have had in Home Bargains and B&M recently, tho it is only complementary. Both are big lumps of fish in jelly and go down very well here, tho to be fair Noah doesn't turn his nose up at much!  Vitamin E is not toxic in humans in large doses only vitamins A and D, tho cats obviously might be different. Cats also need a saturated fat found in meat that is not essential to us so maybe try him on a raw chicken wing?
Title: Re: new foster pics- scaredy cat emerges!
Post by: snarf on June 22, 2010, 21:50:25 PM
hes been on one of the small tins of feline fayre a day (with normal tinned food and dry) and he lurves that  :tongue 2: and he got a raw chicken wing on sun which was expertly trimmed of anything edible in about 15mins!
i got him a catnip mouse as well (its huge, more like a catnip degu) which he adores and made a big soggy lump - i hadnt wanted to try him with catnip before until he was ok with me and not so scared. hes now a little catnip hoarder- i let him out into the house for a little wander and hes straight to the catnip toys and then scarpers back off to the spare room with them!
hes also allowed me to pick him up briefly without any fuss, groom him with a soft brush gently and shock horror- hes also actually purred  :Luv2: :Luv2:

i must not get another cat i must not get another cat i must not get another cat  :-[

I was going to say exactly what Helen said!! One of the reasons why I have kept very few of my fosters (4 out of 82, and 2 of those weren't out of choice!!), is because I couldnt bear the thought of a cat staying in a bad situation (or worse), because I kept a cat that could have been homed, so didn't have the space/time for them.

why cant everyone honour the life of others????

sorry but this just breaks my heart......

i would have him in a heartbeat!!!! but with 4 girls it would be just too much.......(besides Mollie wouldnt take another addition!)

I adore my girls i am sure that there will be a perfect person who will adore this awesome princely puss!......

right off to get the tissues...this place is breaking my heart with all the sad losses and poor babies that are abandoned.....can we have some happy endings please!!! :'(

i am very tempted to keep him!! :shify: and if i thought hed be hard to home i probably would but hes going to have his pick of willing slave i think  :Luv2: Financially at the moment i couldnt keep 3 (at the standard to which they are accustomed) and foster as well so it would be a case of denying a possibly more needy cat a home. i said to friends and family when i started fostering that is a shy/nervous cat came in that got on well with mine that'd be the one that stayed.that said, im on the job hunt atm so if i get something better before hes rehomed i might be swayed (cos then i could keep on fostering  )

i know what you mean Purrdy, its why i wanted to foster- i cant help them all and ill never atone for all the wrongs done by my species to another but i can make a start. there are happy stories- my last foster Giles came to me very thin, hyperthyroid and alone- vets secretly thought he was going somewhere more comfortable to die  :'( but he put on weight, had his thyroid-ectomy and was adopted by a lovely retired lady that adores him, spoils him rotten and needs him. he is happy beyond belief. your twiggy and fern are a happy ending story too  ;D theyre lucky to have found you and squeak will have his happy ending too

thanks for those lovely words....I guess im just so sensitive......i adore all animals, insects plants etc etc......but cats have to be my passion......they are such sleek elegant intelligent creatures....full of grace and beauty beyond words......and so so affectionate!....I adore them......i hope this little guy fnds the love he so rightly deserves..... :)  and thank you for being the beautiful person you are....like so many others here!

no interest in squeak yet ( now squeaky boy or squeakwell or Squeakers- pet names are a bad sign me thinks!) can hardly believe hes the same cat that hid under the bed for 2 weeks, such a loving purring boy now  :Luv: he still doesnt like being picked up and stiffens but provided hes properly supported straight away and hes getting head rubs he will purr and paddle while picked up, even while being moved between rooms  :wow:, his fur has thickened up and is in lovely condition for most of him now- tail still alittle dry and trousers unkempt but hes getting more comfortable with grooming brushes and loves rubbing his cheeks against the soft brushes.
my mum came to visit a few weeks ago and he was all over her as well, she nearly cat napped him  :evillaugh: he does this very sweet thing where he'll sit next to you to be fussed and if you stop he'll just put a big paw on your leg to remind you hes there  :Luv2:
his fav toy at the mo is the turbo track, he cant walk past it without playing and tosses his head like an overexcited kitten :Luv:
hes still trying to make friends with my 2 and is slowly getting closer. tbh i think alot of lucifers swearing is because hes finally found someone that backs down for him  and sparecats just making sure he knows that shes in charge. theyll all happily sleep feet apart and sit feet apart, its just when squeak trys to smell them or rub against them that they react so good enough for me  :)

as in other thread, a lady has now enquired about squeaky, shes adopted through us before and is apparently lovely.
im actually happy for him although i will really miss him whenhe goes, hes started sleeping next to my pillow at night  :Luv2: although lucifer is not pleased about that  >:(
i think to be honest, that although financially i can cover keeping him and continuing to foster it wouldnt leave much for emergency and as long as squeak has a good safe home, priority has to be lucifer and sparecat. ithink if i were to adopt squeak i would be prioritising my feelings (squeak wont mind either way in the long run as long as hes safe and warm and fed) and not the possible future needs of the kits.

i also wonder whether (as i would like to continue fostering) my home would be best for squeak, hes not as confident as my two, theyre coping fantastically considering i keep letting complete strangers into their home. im not sure squeak would? if that makes any sense?

Joking aside you do have to be realistic and do what's best all round for all cats present and future.  Hopefully he will be ok with this lady that's had cats from you before and won't take long tointeract with her - you did a great job and maybe he will be ok with her from the start because of it.

i replied but its gone??

shes coming to meet him tomorrow and subject to them liking each other and then a homecheck so hes not going just yet! so well see how they interact tomorrow! weve just had a little chat on the phone and she does sound very nice, she has 3 elderly cats already, which is good for squeak, hes not at all dominant and i think hed be stressed if he had the responsibility of being the only cat. i think shell understand if he feels the need to hide for a little bit

well, lovely lady has just left. after my two had shown themselves up and scared off squeak i put squeak on the sofa by her and he seemed very taken, he lay down and snuggled into her side and quite literally gazed adoringly into her eyes as she stroked his throat and ears. when she got up to leave she told squeak she'd see him soon and came back to stroke him again so i think hes got a new home. much as ill miss him i think she seems better suited to squeak than me  :scared:

I am really pleased to hear that it seems like a good match - if she has adopted through you before, why does she need another homecheck?

Sorry me being sleepy and typing semi autopilot. this lady wont be re-homechecked because weve been over recently and the coordinators come to know her well through her previous adoptions but i think we generally would re-homecheck. things change, situations change, differing cats needs and differing opinions on suitability from different homecheckers i assume. although ive been homechecked to foster i would have expected somesort of homecheck (however subtley done) before i had been allowed to adopt.

Thanks mary and helen, its been squeak thats done all the work though, clever little lad  :Luv: nice lady is picking him up next weekend so at least i get another week with him to get used to him leaving  :'(

I wouldnt homecheck someone twice unless they had moved, unless there were circumstances that needed it (only one I can think of offhand is homing a cat like Ellie to point out places she would try and hide). Enjoy your last week together, I am glad he has a fab home, and it enables you to continue helping needy cats, as that is what fostering is all about.

nice lady has just picked up squeak  :'( who made a right fuss getting into his new carrier. cor blimey never seen the like, hed struggle out (and hes very strong when hes got a mind to be) then settle back down to sleep or to watch me and nice lady trying to stem our newly aquired wounds! not scared at all just playing up  >:( nothing to do with me playing with him all day and depriving him of sleep at all  :innocent:
i have passed on forum address as ordered  :evillaugh: Nice Lady has promised to let me know how he settles and hopefully shell join up.

i am still missing him, he was a beautiful character, an absolute gentle giant  :Luv: nice lady sent me a text saying he was home, had settled and was asleep next to her on the sofa. its very good hes feeling so at home so quickly and none of the scaredy cat behaviour but i am a little jealous that hes not next to me anymore!  :'(

soooo im following julies advice from another thread and moving straight to the next and keeping myself busy with kitten and as luck would have it- keeping you busy is exactly what kittens do best!

 Hi
Thanks for the welcomes! Squeak has been micro chipped today, bless him, he just lay there! I can't believe how laid back he is, love him to bits already!
I lost a cat before he came, my little old man, Felix and I swear Squeak has taken on some of his behaviours, Felix followed me around the flat, Squeak does, Felix used to like to watch me having a bath and Squeak does!!
How bizarre!!
