I left home at around 7.30pm last night and to my knowledge everything was ok then on my return just after 11.30pm i immediately saw cody had a huge swelling on the right hand side of his mouth in the sub mandibular region :scared:
He seems well enough but i did actually comment at tea time yesterday how it had been funny cody had slept most of the day, but well we all have tired days i said :tired:
I suspect it is a nasty cat bite but i cannot for the life of me see a puncture marks anywhere and his skin is easily seen as its on the white area of his fur. I just really really really really hope they dont knock him out and shave and lance him..my poor boy wont like having his gorgeous fur shaved off :'(
Im not sure if they have an open surgery today or not but im away to get ready and will phone when they open then i can just jump in car and go whenever. Ps.. he seems well in himself today and is eating and drinking..mind you he ate a fair bit of raw chicken cut offs last night too but this must be nasty as it was NOT noticable early evening but was huge by 11.45pm and he hadnt been with the big boys whilst i was away but he was with them yesterday >:( I knew they'd bite him eventually but why does it have to be his face >:( >:(

back from the vets and not hair shaved so far..phew !
well vet not sure what it is, like me she thinks it feels abit too solid for abcess and strange there are no puncture marks to be found. his temp is normal and the rest of his glands are ok. She said he is a tiny bit red round his gum margin of his teeth (this is normal for cody as is normal for some cats)
she's given syn injection and tabs to start tomorrow, ive to go back on thurs if no better or worse (obviously sooner if much worse)
he seems less sleepy today mind you and is still eating/drinking..he was having fun puddling in the dogs bowl this morning as they'd dropped a dog food kibble in it so he was fishing LOL.
Im abit worried tho as she did confirm that it feels like it could be sub mandibular lymph node & she asked about felv testing/vacc history etc (obviously given the history of his breeding there arent much concerns for that now however) but we'll have to hope antibiotics do the trick or he'll quite possibly be shaved on thursday.

Ta guys, he's sitting on my legs just now but i can tell he's not as relaxed as normal :'(
I was glad of having an automatic car today coz he yowled loudly on the journey but calmed when he stuck his foot out and i held it :Luv:

I hope Mr Cody is OK, he doest sound like he is in pain which is good.

Ahhh poor Cody :( Lynn is there a definite lump or just swelling .... I was wondering if he had been stung! Just an idea but it is that time of year when the wasps and bees are beginning to wake up.

Well he found a nice sunny spot in the window sill so he's been enjoying a warm snooze this afternoon, Ive been feeling guilty as it never occured to me during the day yesterday that he was feeling ill and thats why he was sleeping :-[
Sam i thought about that too and altho i have seen a bumble bee in the garden non of the windows had been open the past couple of days so nothing had come into the house.
I noticed when he was sleeping on my legs earlier that he was putting the swollen side down onto my leg so i am guessing it was throbbing as you can imagine having something that swollen would do.

Lynn it might have been a wasp .... they hibernate and I had one going mad in the bedroom window the other morning ..... god knows where it had spent the winter (mum says they bed down in the top of the curtains!) but it was really miffed that it couldn't get out until I opened the window and shooed it out.

A bee or wasp sting is what initially occurred to me when I read about our poor little model Cody thee Man this am but knew his mom would know a great deal more about that than moi so kept shtum.
My business partner was chased around the office by ENORMOUS (per her) bee the other day and I was chased today by wasp whilst looking for replacement for my old car which serves me right.
How is our young chap Lynn?

well he seems not too bad, still eating and VERY pleased to have hills on offer again after not having had it for ages. He's not overly playful and wanting to sleep on me etc..seems abit "jumpy" with loud noises and the kids etc so im not sure if his ear is also sore (from the swelling i'd say it quite possible could be..you know like we can have a sore ear from toothache type of thing) and also i am reckoning he's abit scared from himself which is perfectly understandable.
Im also second guessing myself as to whether it has gone down abit or not, sometimes i say yes then i say no :Crazy: Its very very hard though thats for sure and doesnt actually feel like an abcess at all.
If it is going down the most logical explaination would be a sting but we just cant find any evidence at all.

Aww poor little man. Hate to think of such a usually naughty boy being all quiet and on edge. If it is a sting Lynn, how long before he's out of the woods without antihistamines? I remember our Tom was stung in his mouth when he was very young (about 3 months old) and his reaction frightened the life out of us (we thought he had broken his jaw it was so swollen) but antihistamine jab knocked him out for a day or two and he recovered OK.
So glad he's eating though as that is always a good sign. I know what you mean about second guessing yourself about whether the swelling has gone down. Might I suggest you take yet another photo of our ginger chap now and again in the morning and compare the two to see if you notice a difference?

awwwww Lynn poor baby. i would just like to say I had the same thing last year with Gizmo and he had been stung by a bee. They gave him antihistamine and after an hour the swelling went down after an hour...it did look exactly like Cody's. Just an idea
Please give him a big kiss from and and head kisses from my babies too

I recently had root canal work done due to a tooth abscess and Cody's symptoms sound very similar to mine: the swelling and pain along to jaw to ear.
The easiest remedy if this is diagnosed in Cody is to have the offending tooth removed (I've got to return to dentist for the crown!). I don't know how a vet can tell that a cat has this, as they can't say where things hurt.
Other that this, he may just have a localised infection causing that node to swell. Hunt the infection! As a VN I'm sure you know the causes of single node enlargements.

Well the swelling is definately smaller today, i'd say now about 2/3 to nearly half the size it was which is great but its still rock solid. On a brighter note he was playing and being a devil this morning which was great ;D cant believe i felt so happy to have him being mischevious :rofl: I'd say it is most definately his lymph node or salivary gland that is enlarged but god knows why it would be so hard, as long as it goes down tho i'll not worry too much about it.

I was thinking sting as I read it but there woul;d be some evidence - possibly in the mouth. A fewconfused insects in this part of the world at the moment.

Going in the right direction, by the sound of it, Lynn. As I mentioned in chat yesterday evening, I had a blocked salivary gland once and that was hard too, until it drained.

He's been quite sleepy this afternoon again but i suppose he'll still be fighting infection or whatever it may be.

Kylie had the same thing when I was in London. The vet said it was a catbite. She stuck a thermometer up klie's bum and said she didn't have a temperature. No need for antibiotics, £35.00 please :tired:

have just palpated and the lump has now shrunken so much that i am able to tell it is definately the lymph node and its now back in correct anatomical postion and is no more than a slightly enlarged node. ;D ;D ;D I will finish his antibiotics though !!
