I've just got back in from the vets as Alfie isn't well :'( :'( At around 3 o'clock, he started making the most awful noise.....really horrible :'( I phoned the emergency vets up and he said it sounded like he could possibly have colic or something and to give him some Metacam and a couple of Nisomax, and if no improvement take him in in the morning. I went to give him the tablets and his gums were virtually grey :'( Phoned the vets back and I've had to take him in. He hasn't got a clue what's wrong with him, his temp is 98 and his oxygen levels weren't even showing on the machine. Basically his metabolism was slowing right down but they don't know why. His gum colouring could indicate shock, and he isn't showing any unique signs that would point to a poison. He's been placed in an Oxygen Tank and he did seem to perk up a little after a few minutes, he will remain in this overnight. The crying Trevor put down to delirium rather than pain. The noise was awful, he cried all the way to the vets which set me off crying, and he cried quite a lot in the vets :'( :'( I've got to phone up in the morning before work and they will be doing blood tests etc on him to try and determine a cause. Please pray for my gorgeous boy.......I couldn't bear it if anything happened to him :'( :'(

I am so sorry my thoughts are with you.

Dawn, you're having an awfully rough time of late. Sending positive thoughts to Alfie.
-
I've just had an update, Alfie is still in the Oxygen tent but he's improved, his colour is better, he seems to be breathing a lot easier and his temp is back to normal. Trevor's been scouring the internet for possible causes and he's totally puzzled. His bloods have come back normal as well. He's going to keep him in over the weekend to monitor him but he thinks he should be okay.......thank god for that. Thanks all for your good messages  I will be getting an update later.
-
Thats awful Dawn Im praying along with the rest of us that Alfie gets back to 100%. What do you think could of happened?
-
They haven't got a clue.........he was fine and then just started wailing :'( They will be taking him off the oxygen shortly to try him breathing on his own........god love him, he will be so scared. He's a big lump but petrified of vets, they said he's stopped crying now though but obviously a bit nervy. I've got to go to work........I am really late and now I've heard the price of the oxygen treatment, I can't afford to get the sack :scared:
-
Fingers crossed for a speed recovery especially in view of how much it cost per hour when we had a cat on Oxygen Therapy.
-
Hi Dawn
Everything crossed and sending lots of positive vibes to Alfie
My thoughts are with you both xxxx
-
fingers crossed dawn..im wandering what about a blood clot ?? if course im sure your vet already thought of obvious reasons.
-
Only just seen this Dawn, I do hope that Alfie will be OK.
So strange that it came on so suddenly and the vets do not have a clue what the problem is.
Thinking of you and Alfie and hope for a speedy recovery
-
This must be very worrying, the suddeness of it, but do hope this dear puss comes through it all.

hows alfie doing dawn ?
-
Thanks everyone  I've been to see Alfie, they said he has been very quiet and withdrawn but I think he was just unhappy being there. He hadn't eaten up until me going but he ate a full bowl whilst I was there :Luv: He did his usual headbutting and dribbling against my face so he's feeling a lot better and was pleased to see his mum :Luv: :Luv: He's been taken out of the Oxygen tank and his breathing is a lot better and his colour is nearly normal now. They haven't got the foggiest as to what's caused it but they will be keeping him in over the weekend to monitor him, and if he has another breathing attack, the machine is there which to be honest is a godsend......the difference in his breathing last night after just a few minutes was brilliant so whatever the cost, it's worth it. I mentioned to the vet about a possible clot or possibly an asthma attack.....they couldn't rule either out, but may never know. I'm sooo relieved it looks like he's going to be okay....I've been worried sick all day about him, he's one of the sweetest gentlest cats I have and I couldn't bear anything happening to him. Poor Sally was looking for him this morning, I think she'll be just as relieved as me when he comes home.
-
Oh thats good news. Well done Alfie, just keep breathin son
-
Am glad he is seeming much better now Dawn.
-

Dawn,
Only just seen this i am so sorry to hear about Alfie although good news that he does seem to be souding a bit better..
Just out of interest do he cough at all ..Yumi has Asthma and when i first noticed something was wrong she kept coughing and had a similar problem ..went all limp and was very lost in herself with high pitched squeaks ..!?
If it is can be easily controlled so fingers crossed it is nothing too serious xx
-
dawn im sorry
mango has asthma but its more like snorting and wheezing and sticking head out trying to breath and clear airways never crying
i hope he is ok there such a worry
i go into panic when she has a attack although my vet is open 7 days and they will alwas get you in if you want to wait
im thinking of him x
-
I've not noticed any snorting, coughing or wheezing with him.......this was just so scarey how he was fine and then the next thing he's an emergency case. I'm over the moon he's out of the woods but my only concern with not knowing what's caused it, is if it happens again. I'm used to nothing being a case of simple illness with my cats but I would really like them to get to the bottom of this. I'll give Alfie all your good wishes and cuddles when I see him and I'm sure he'll be sending lots of headbutts and dribbly purrs in return
-
Dawn, he is a gorgeous boy, isn't he? Hope that this was a weird one-off, and that he's back to normal again in no time. Bet you can't wait to have him home. :)
-
Hi Dawn any news on the handsome Alfie :Luv:
-
Alfie's still pretty much the same but as long as he doesn't have another attack he can come home tomorrow :)
-
Glad he is coming home Dawn ... fingers crossed this was just a one off and he will be OK from now on.
-

Have everything crossed that Alfie comes home tomorrow xx

He is sooo gorgeous. :Luv:
Hope the vets will be able to find out what happened. It scarey not to know what it was isn't it.
Love and get well thoughts with you both

-
It looks like Alfie can come home tomorrow :yayyy: I spoke to the vet earlier, Alfie is still pretty much the same, they've had no breathing problems with him but he's not eating bless him. They said he's still very withdrawn and quiet and has spent most of today hiding under his bed........I think he is just missing home though and should pick up when I get him back again.
-
Just caught up, Hugs to you and prayers for the Handsome Alfie. Great news he is going home!
-

PS. My Alfie say's "Us Alfie chaps are made of tougher stuff :) :), Alfie by name, Alfred (elf) by nature :).
PPS. That's why I love the name Alfie, it suits my Alfie so well as he looks and behaves like a little Elf :).
