i had to take chiana to the vets yet again cause she was scratching her ears quite a lot and id just been to the dentist was going to put it off til monday but realised how badly she was scratching and was worried her ears were infected again and so took her straight to RSPCA (our vets) and turns out her ears just need cleaning and whilst he was doing the check up he said she is a bit overweight though i asked him to weigh her as i like to keep an eye on the weight for flea treatment etc and shes 4.5kg! i just said ur joking right shes always been the smallest out of them all (3.85kg last time she was weighed) and when i got home i thought well if shes 4.5kg wot the :censored: is salem cause hes always been 1kg bigger than her and im pretty sure hes still bigger than her and last time he was weighed he was rounghly 4.8kg i mean i know its cause of the fact of me moving etc but still makes me feel like i need to put them all on harnesses and take em jogging lol
-
I think that 4.5 kgs is about average cat size, unless your cat is very small or very large.
Afraid I have one very large at 6.5 kgs and another at 6kgs.............Franta birman was about 4,5kgs before he was ill and his brother is under 3kgs now although he would be about a kilo heavier with a fourth leg. Both are older gentlemen now and will be 17 yrs in Aug.

well chiana is a small frame so think she will need to lose it and since she walked down to the main road and went across it (she got stuck other side and was too scared to come back) shes been very fragile about going outside and although im thankful thats shes no longer that keen on going out it wont help her weight loss
-
I wouldn't say thats a big weight for a cat, my vet always says the best weight is around 4kg- all of my cats are over that with my biggest at 6.7kg.
-
My cat Tilly who was sadly killed last year on the road, she used to be 4.5 kg, and my vet wanted her on a diet to get her down to 4 kg. She always had that baggy belly when she trotted along ha ha!

It depends on the overall size and frame of the cat. Some would be overweight at 4.5kg whilst others would be underweight. Jaffa weighs about 4.8kg - he is a big cat (long and tall) but is small boned and quite a skinny cat (not skinny as in underweight, jut a naturally thin and lean cat). Mosi is about the same, I think, although he's not been weighed for ages and not since he stopped growing. He is a fairly large cat, although not as large as Jaffa. He looks chunkier than Jaffa because of his long fur, but there's not a lot of cat under the fluff.
The best way to tell is to feel around the abdomen - if there is more than a little bit of fat underneath the abdomen, she is probably overweight. You should be able to feel the ribs but not see them. If she is overweight, it will be easier to deal with when it's just a littel bit. Was she underweight when she was last weighed and found to be 3.85kg? I would be concerned at the putting on of weight unless she was underweight then and needed to put on some weight.
-
well she has put on weight probably more because of the situation of moving and everything so ive started playing with her outside cause the cats have not been out much due to me being constantly out im going to spend the whole day out playing with them i do actually have a cat that is quite lean riff someone has actually called rspca about him before and rspca inspector turned up took a look at him and had a word with me and literally said to the person dont waste my time hes not underweight or being treated cruely and he has food out constantly one of my sisters cats the same but hes very lean with long legs so it almost looks like hes walking on stilts

Ours are around the 4 - 4.5kg mark (a couple of them are fairly big cats) so I was quite shocked when one of my yard cats was weighed last weekend - 2.75kg! And that was after he'd had 2 breakfasts, too. I think two of him would make on Gomez, but I daren't weight Gomez as I don't think my scales will take him.....!

If she likes to be in rather than out, have you tried a laser pen to get her running round the house more?
-
i have but the battery runs out very quickly shes started going out a bit more again now but she stays within shouting distance
-
My Ollie is now 5kg. he was 6kg, the vet says for the size of him 5kg is ok. he always was a big boy.
Laser pens run out bateries so quickly they are a nigtmare. I use a feather on a stick and have them jumping about chasing it. was about £2 in pet shop and they love it

well will get my sister to orde some for me when she orders spare tags for me (riff lost his collar so he has the only spare tag) but id rather he lost the collar than get caught
-
Iv only changed the batts once, i dont use it daily but must have had it a couple of years! Id try another laser pen if it drains that quickly
-
I have this one but in red plastic. I have had it about 4 years and it is fine. The batteries last a while. The previous one only lasted a few months. It had different shaped adapters but was rubbish.

A lot of vets do go purely on weight and don't take anything else into account.
I remember when Boopy was weighed a while ago and the locum vet gave her a check over and felt Boopy all over and said she was perfect although she could maybe do with a little bit more weight on her (entire cats are lighter than neuters as they use more calories and they often go off their food when calling). I then put Boopy on the scales, the vet saw that she was 6.7kg at the time and said that she was too heavy   Needless to say I did point out that a few moments earlier she had said by looking and feeling Boopy that she could do with a little bit more on her (Boopy is very tall and very long) and the vet seemed totally confused by the fact an entire female can look like she needs a little bit of weight on her but still be 6.7kg :evillaugh:

Sounds like she didnt take the breed into account either........sigh
