Would a neutered male be interested in an un-spayed female?
would a neutered male see a spayed female as a rival?
seeing a bit of aggression in the house from the possible alpha cat [its really hard to tell who the alpha male is between the brothers] and its possible the female kitten is coming into her first season [how can I tell?] but Marco had a go at Missy [spayed female] last night and just this morning I stopped a possible spat between him and Stig [neutered male]
any advice appreciated thanks

Yep, unspayed females give off pheromones as far as I'm aware that make toms act differently towards each other. Not sure how you know a cats coming into her first season though, I've always been lucky in the fact there wasn't any disruption and my lot were spayed or neutered at six months or below.

What sort of aggression? Could he be trying to mate her? It looks pretty vicious I'm told.

I know Marco is neutered but if she is giving off a funny/vibe smell due to her hormones then although he may not react in the way an entire male might ie want to mate her, she will still smell different to him and may be making him uneasy hence the newfound aggression?

the aggression is to the spayed female not the un-spayed female though (and today to Stig a neutered male) they all eat together just fine but then the agro starts, maybe its not even the kitten in season but a bit of powerplay for top cat?

If they've all lived together since September (when the kitten arrived) with no fighting and the fighting has only just started at around the time the kitten (might) be coming into season then I think there is the clue. Maybe the hormones/smell is getting him worked up and he's taking the aggression out on anyone, not necessarily the kitten.

that's what I was thinking, its really only just started and its even freaked Stig out a little :( he's been even more timid than usual (and that's saying something) hiding away under the quilt at one point :(

Have you ever tried a Feliway plug in with them? Lu is very sensitive and he is a changed cat with the Feliway plugged in.

Redirected aggression is meant to be pretty common in cats. Definitely try Feliway if you haven't already. ;)

It could be kitten smells making him worry about leadership or it could be the natural maturing that happens to them, around 3 yrs is when cats develop socially and im guessing the boys are around this age now?
Iv seen changes in the 4 i had as youngsters around this time, simon is 4.5 and the other 3 siblings are 4 on march 31st, fortunately they still all get on v.well but its different to how they were at a 12/18 months

not normal no, not fighting any more but still standoffish :) the Feliway has been in for a week now, how much change can I reasonably expect?

It depends on the cat. Feliway is a big help and can take a couple weeks to see a difference. I, however, used Zylkene (supplement and natural, no meds in it) to help Lexy as she was afraid of her own shadow at one point, and Feliway had stopped offering help, she was always under the bed and jumpy. Zylkene after a couple weeks has turned her into a little kitten at 7 years old. She is still skittish but less so and rarely hides anymore.
Hope it all goes well at home, it must be distressing to see.

Well at least that's a step in the right direction :hug: I've been using Feliway for ages so can't remember how long it took to 'kick in' but do know that if I don't have one plugged in you can really notice the difference in Lu, he's like a different cat with it plugged in - so much more relaxed :)
Has Tippy been done yet? If not then it could still me the vibes/smell she is giving off.

Well if the issues were caused by Tippy growing up and the Feliway has taken things down a notch to a 'stand off' rather than aggression then that's really positive and bodes well for the future when the hormone/smell thing isn't an issue anymore ;D

My Harry went bonkers when Lyla was coming into season, he would try to mount her although he had been neutered for about a year. He would bite her neck as if to get on her then look kinda strange as what to do next :-:
He still trys it on with her sometimes but this is now for domanance over her, not for mating reasons as Lyla has been spayed. He also rivals Ted sometimes as Ted is "top" cat :shy:
