In my last thread, I posted about how we "inherited" 2 young cats from some neighbors across the street, who decided they preferred a puppy to the cats they adopted. http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/topic,30753.0.html (http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/topic,30753.0.html) I am absolutely enraged at these people, more so than I was!
When we got the cats from them (Oscar and Minnie), I asked specifically if Minnie had been spayed. Both of them assured me she was. I asked several times for their medical and adoption records, I'm pretty particular about keeping copies of paperwork, and kept getting the runaround from them. Finally, my OH said, never mind. Oscar went in for his neuter a few days later (we got them on Friday 5 March, Oscar was neutered on 15th). Since we couldn't see a spay scar on Minnie, and thought it could have been done in the side which is harder to see, we figured we'd just keep an eye on her and if she didn't go into heat, she should be ok. We keep our cats inside anyhow (urban area), only in garden with us. Well, last week, we noticed Minnie (who is very small and delicate, half Oscar's size, must have been the runt) was getting a bit portly around the middle; we thought maybe we were giving her too much food, as she's so small. Then on Friday, the penny dropped; I remembered they had been letting Minnie go out in the filthy alley next to their house. I though...crap, maybe she got pregnant. :Crazy: Sure enough, I took her to vet yesterday (Monday) and although the vet couldn't feel anything, a scan showed she was indeed pregnant, and must have gotten so just a couple days before we got her. No wonder the jerks who had her blew me off about her medical records.
After much discussion with our vet, we decided to have a pregnant spay done on her. She is so small, there was virtually no way she could have carried the kittens to term and delivered; during the surgery, the vet found there would have been 6 (!) kittens. :( So it would have been a bad situation all around. I know some folks will be upset that we went ahead and had that done, but it was really in the best interest of Minnie.
So she had her surgery yesterday afternoon, and was awake and charming all the nurses by 6pm (and asking politely for her dinner...heh!! She's a real favorite, she chirps and talks a lot, so is getting plenty of cosseting. The vet will keep her there until Friday, to let things settle; it was a big deal for such a little girl. Plus with the other 5 here, we want to make sure she has time for the healing to start without any upset. We are very lucky with our vet, they are only charging me about a third of the hospitalization price for each day (normally 36 per night, only charging me 12 per night!). :wow:
I'm so furious at the :censored: across the street I can't hardly see straight. How selfish and disgusting, to care so little about this lovely little kitty. I'm really biting my tongue, don't want to get into a urinary Olympics with them as they are "neighbors" (inject sarcasm to that word!) but it's tough. At least Minnie ended up with us, and we'll take best care of her.

Poor little soul .... definitely the best thing all round for her to be spayed now. Fingers crossed your neighbours donn't get a princess .... otherwise there will be lots of puppies very soon!

Poor little girl. Thank goodness she's with you now. It sounds like you've certainly done the right thing. I can't imagine what would have happened to her had she stayed with the 'neighbours'. :(

What awful people. You did the right thing :hug:. Are you going to let them know what has happened? I'm thinking of some comment like "by the way, I wish you had told us she hadn't been spayed as it meant a more complicated procedure when she inevitably became pregnant which of course cost a lot more"
Now is perhaps not the right time to mention anything as feelings will be running high. I'd be fuming. Perhaps some future date though? I'm just thinking they sound thick enough to think cats don't always get pregnant if not spayed.

You should go talk to them and make them squirm. You don't have to yell, just ask them why they've been saying the cat was spayed when she clearly wasn't? If you're calm and collected it will make them hard to slam the door in your face

Hi all; thanks very much for the kind words and encouragement. Minnie is making a great recovery; she has charmed all the vet staff, :Luv2: and is getting plenty of cuddles and will be terribly spoiled by the time I pick her up on Friday! :naughty: I don't think she's homesick, as she's keeping busy supervising everything going on in the cat department there! :Luv:
I don't think I will purposely say a word to these people. They are very obviously trying to avoid us; they know they are wrong and did the wrong thing. So I hope the guilt makes them choke. I'm also reluctant to get into a big hassle with them...after all, they do live across from us, and I don't want any unpleasantness like getting our cars scratched up or our motorbikes vandalized or anything. These days, you just can't tell about people and their motivations. But if they ask me...I will tell them exactly what has happened. And on top of it all, we've never even seen them walking the puppy they dumped these kitties for (I saw the puppy when I went to pick up the cats), so I wonder if they got tired of it already. >:(
All in all, the kitties have really landed on their feet with us. Our house basically revolves around the cats...my husband has shelving at all different levels in our conservatory, plus our home made cat tree which they love; all windowsills have carpeting and cushions on them, I don't run the hoover very often :evillaugh: and there are plenty of snacks to be had, plus baskets everywhere with all sorts of mousies and toys in them (and the odd shoebox to sit in!). So not a bad bet around here if you're a kitty! We have the best vets around, who are only about 10 mins away, and a Pets at Home is 5 minutes away. And we both love them all... :wow:

Miss Minnie has been at the vet's all this week; good thing, as she managed to chew out 2 of her stitiches yesterday...naughty girl...so has had some glue to top up the incision. She's actually already well on the road to being healed up, but will have a lovely cone collar for a few days. She's managed to charm all the nursing staff at the hospital, rolling around for tummy scritches and talking to everyone who comes in the room! I pick her up this afternoon, miss her loads, will post a pic of her in her lovely collar accessory!
Thanks again, everyone, for kind words and encouragement. I'm absolutely certain we did the right thing by taking in Minnie and Oscar (who is snoring away on his cushion on the windowsill without a care in the world other than when he gets his next snack).

Just out of curiosity and I may have missed it somewhere on the thread but why did the vet keep her in for a week?
They definitely have landed on their feet, thank goodness for people like you who are there to pick up the pieces when other people get it so terribly wrong :hug:
Dave and Chilli would like to know if there's room for two more as they like the sound of your set-up :shify:

She's very small for her age, and it was a big surgery for her, so since we have the other 5 here and limited places to close off, she'd be ok at vets for a few days to get a jump start on healing without being mauled by this bunch.
