Title: Spay and Constipation
Post by: LittleOne on February 20, 2010, 21:37:22 PM
I've done a quick search but didn't find an answer.

Bo was spayed on Wednesday but hasn't had a poo yet (unless she's doing it somewhere she shouldn't  :shify:). I've read elsewhere that up yo 3 days of not pooing following a spay is fine but when should I be getting worried?
We missed our post op check today due to my social anxiety but if I can i'll be phoning them first thing monday...unless you think this warrants a call to the emergency vet?

Thanks

I think you must be guided by her behaviour - if she shows signs of distress she may need some medication

I don't think constipation is a dangerous condition in itself, but you don't want her to be doing a lot of straining when she has stitches

Thanks Trigger, she's not distressed at all, just put out she has a cone i think would be her only complaint!
Plus she's not eaten much since the op, today was the first day she had a good meal, I'm probably just panicing having not been responsible for a cat before!
Will see how she goes the next day or 2.

the cone may well put her off too - most  cats like to look down when they are digging their holes in preparation for pooing

be prepared to remove it temporarily if necessary

I don't think there will be anything to worry about, probably just a change in her system that's caused this plus she's not eaten much.  If worried though I'd just give your vet a call

No poop today. New fresh litter in trays and had some no cone time...she just sat in her tray and washed! Bless her.
Will call vet tomorrow x

Saw vet yesterday, nothing to be felt abdominally and he's not worried. If nothing by saturday when stitches out then laxatives.
Can stop worrying now   :)

Glad you've checked it out   I have to say when I asked my vet a couple of times in the past over Schui she was reluctant and said see how it goes and then infact I never ended up getting any.

not at all

spending an inordinate time peering at the contents of litter trays is almost obligatory on Purrs :evillaugh:

you'll find these useful  :yayyy: :yayyy: :yayyy: :yayyy:
