As you know we had Theo the Norwegian forest cat come in. He was badly matted underneath due to not like being groomed underneath. He gets very bad tempered when you try!
yesterday I spent time grooming him and got some knots out on chest area and tail. However due to his temper and squirming I couldnt manage to hold him and get the matts out at the smae time and my kids were to scared to help bless them.
So down comes aunty Pauline this morning armed with clippers incase the matts are deep to skin. We started with basic brushing and I held him whilst Pauline got the chest matt out. He didnt like it and hissed, spat and tried biting :aww: But we were dammed if we were letting him win. Next came the undernath part. I held him down on his side/back, the fur was badly matted in areas and we decided to clipper it all off, this will give me time whilst its growing back to get him used to being groomed underneath also with out more knots growing back. Pauline showed him who was boss (go pauline  ) and in the end he gave up the fight and just grumbled :aww:  His claws were clipped and ears cleaned which his left ear was pretty dirty and he keeps scratching at. It now looks red and swollen and inflamed so he is booked in tomorrow to see the vets (oh the fun lol)
Every day I will groom his top and chest and tail as normal and then work on getting him used to the underneath with a soft brush and play.
This cat has definatly ruled the roost with past owner/s and always won, but will soon learn thats not what life is about.
Here is some piccies I took inbetween holding him for Pauline.

Apart from his grumpyness and bad temper in grooming he is a very loving boy and full of personality :Luv2:
-
Maybe now all them tats are out he will then view the grooming as pleasant, one he knows there is no tugging etc.... I bet he is feeling tons better now.... He is lovely! :Luv2:
-
He is reminding me of Oliver :(
-

Lol, is he a protester aswell then. Pauline is the most experienced with grooming :)
Aww cc sorry hun :(
-
the only time I ever get a sound out of him is when he wants to go out or I am trying to brush him, its the only time he ever gets his claws out too!!
-
Lol. How do you manage him grooming? Do you get scratched?
-
He's usually ok for a few minutes, I try and sit him on my lap, hold him with one hand and brush him with the other. He doesn't mind so much his back, head and under his chin/chest being done, but, like you say, its his belly, tale and back legs he isn't too keen on having brushed!
-
Have you tried holding him on a surface like a table. Makes having control alot easier. To do the underneth part we find it easier rolling them onto there side and holding them (2 people) where he can be fussed also and told a good boy.
With Theo I aim to find his favourate treat and get him to relax on his side. With a soft brush gently start at side and move down to tummy offering a treat, perhaps dangle a toy and get him to relax happily playing.

 CC - he does look a lot like Oliver.
-
I've tried lots of things... lol! but he's not a particularly fussy cat (not big on cuddles) but I will persevere and maybe try him with dreamy or 10 next time....

Theo looks gorgeous, if grumpy! :Luv:

There is a method that apparently can be used for giving fluids for a CRF cat that is supposed to work. If it does, it could be used for grooming. You put 4 or 5 clothes pegs along the loose skin on their back (not ones that pinch too hard :scared: ) as if they are being scruffed. It is supposed to make them go all floppy & relaxed. Maybe worth a try?

Ohh thats interesting to read.. Wouldnt you get the same reaction from scruffing them though?
-
I'm sure it is to mimic scruffing except if gives you 2 free hands :evillaugh:
-
Ohh yeh never thought of that lol.
Its a good technin actualy and might give it a go with training Theo with grooming if he doesnt respond to my planned way..
