Title: white of Dinah's eyes showing - any ideas
Post by: Rosella moggy on January 30, 2010, 10:37:06 AM
I will try and post pics to show but using lappy, old pc dead that has all me camera software on and photobucket not playing ball so had to down load resizer ..... today not going to plan  :-:

I rang vet yesterday and explained I had noticed prob with Dinah's eyes but no other signs of infection.  VN said poss sign of worms (no flea probs as far as I know)  but need to have a look.  Agreed worming pill and keep an eye.  She is booked in now for monday am as no better today.  Anyone heard of white of eyes showing being poss sign of worms?  New to me.

I thought as it says here, that it can be a signof lots of things and cats can get it when under the weather for lots of different reasonshttp://www.petplanet.co.uk/vet_answers.asp?thread_id=1516

I hope Dinah is OK

Is it the third eyelid? sounds like it could be, if so - just checked my books and could be because of virus, flu, diarrhoea or a parasitic infestation.

Does she seem ok on herself?

Mog's have done that before. I called our vet and he said I could put drops in but if there was no other sign of an issue then it would likely correct itself within a week or so. I opted for the drops because I hate doing nothing. :shy: It did clear up too.

Could it be toravirus? One of mine had it a couple of years ago - his third eyelids were across and he was a bit quiet for a couple of weeks but then he got better without any treatment. It can cause a bit of diarrhea too.

 :thanks: everyone.  Much appreciate input.

She seems perfectly OK otherwise although she doesn't use litter trays so no idea if her poos are OK.  She is very much an outdoor type altho has started spending more time with us over the winter and we have far less tiffs with the others now.  I couldn't open your link Mark but now found this that says it will probably go within 2 to 8 weeks on it's own if no other signs of illness

http://www.petcaregt.com/catcare/catthirdeyelidproblems.html

She and her two girls are due vaccinations so will still bring her on Monday morning with the others and let vet have a look altho a bit wary of vacs for her if she is in anyway under the weather as they have the leukaemia jab too.  It's the vet I rate highly so will be guided by what he says.  Am just hoping he doesn't suggest a barrage of tests  :shify:

Such a pity as she has such beautiful eyes  :(

ETA She currently has lots of ants in her pants.  I've draped mattress protector over banister to air dry and of course it's a purrfect tent for ambushing other furries  :)

I called the vet when Mia's third eyelid was showing but I was advised she wouldnt need treatment as no other symptoms were showing - after a week it went away on its own.

Thankee

Mmmmmmmmm well my angel Millie's 3rd eyelids are starting to show too and Billy's eyes look pretty bad this morning.  Getting Billy to vet is well... a pain in the proverbial and he does tend to have eye ishoos so I've "ignored" his eyes looking a bit sore this last week but his 3rd eyelids are not good this am.  As I'm off to vet tomorrow, think I may take a pic of Billy's eyes with me and see what vet says.  :(

Hmmm. If three cats have the same sort of issues I guess it might be more likely to be an infection that might need AB's. Good luck at the vets tomorrow.

:Luv: Dinah.

Our neighbour's kitten has just had a very similar thing - it passed within a week, they think she had a low-level lurgy.

Thanks so much everyone. Cuddles right back at ya Ruth  :)  Millie's eyes still only slightly iffy but this is photo I'll show vet of Billy's eyes

Not good  :(  and he is simply impossible to apply ointment. I usually go thru mini nervous breakdown just trying to get him in basket.  Even vet that Billy gets on with only managed to put a blob near his eye last time although Billy had already had eye examined, AB and anti inflammatory jabs so wasn't in the mood for any more messing about.  That boy is a real handful.

At least everybody is eating OK (says she touching wood)

Hope all goes well at the vets.  I was going to add I hope he can give you something for Billy so that you don't have to tyake him but it might be easier to take him and let the vet medicate him if he needs medicating - lets hope that he doesn't

Back from vet and not too concerned about Millie and Dinah's eyes (although cannot rule out poss infection/virus no sign yet), Ruby still showing signs of mild gingivitis towards back of mouth (keep an eye) and all the girls had their jabs.  Billy a different matter.  Vet didn't like look of photo and have to bring him in this afternoon for likely AB and anti inflammatory jabs.  Wish me him luck  :shify:

Poor Dinah pee'd in basket.  Had locked her in bedroom this am to stop her usual wanderings and had hoped she would use tray but no.

I got so flustered this morning getting the girls ready for vet; heaven knows what I'd be like trying to get kids to school  :evillaugh:  They had a school girl there so of course showed off Ruby's twinkle toes  :)

Back from vet and Billy's had his jabs.  He was a good boy.  He seems to trust vet.  I arrived 25 mins early at vet as didn't want to be in a rush and me and OH managed to coral our little steed behind curtain so I could scruff him into basket.  Went very smoothly  :)  Vet didn't charge me a consultation fee  :wow:

Were the jabs tha Abs Rosella?

1 AB and 1 steroid anti inflammatory.  Vet is so very good with him.  He examined him whilst still in basket to start with in case Billy started to get frightened  :)

When examining Dinah this am he commented on her beautiful whiskers  :).  He's a very kind man and I do so trust him.  He is not one for over medicating hence no treatment for Dinah or Millie, just wait and see but whilst Billy's eyes are a little better today, they are still not too good so jabs to be safe.  I made involuntary tutty sorta kissy noises at Billy as he was being injected  :-[ :-[ :-[   Vets last comments tonight were that I could take Billy home and whisper sweet nothings to him to settle him down  :evillaugh:.

Thanks ever so for caring.  Love this site

What did vet say about Billy Rosella? did he think an infection?
Title: Re: white of Dinah's eyes showing - any ideas

He said difficult to tell today but, ignoring state of Billy's 3rd eyelids, his eyes do look sore and fur worn away at corners of eyes at top of his nose and yesterdays photo showed signs of some gungyness.  He was pretty vague saying could be his recurring eye prob back again hence jabs.  He reeled off a list of other stuff it might be but said pointless guessing.  Jabs should see him through next 10 days if it is an infection by which time hopefully he should have improved.

Whatever is causing the 3rd eyelid problem may take longer to right itself with Billy, Dinah and Millie but he seemed unconcerned about that.  Everyone is eating well and generally fair dinkum otherwise.

So pleased you were able to get to the vets with Billy and that the vet is so good with him  ;D

I hope the jabs work some magic and his eyes get back to normal soon
