I know this has probably been asked before but the search function is timing out before giving me any results.
I want a microchip cat flap and have done some research and know there are two available - the Pet Porte Smart Flap (mains, c£100) and Sureflap (battery, c£75). I've read reviews on various 'independent' sites and they seem to have similar results - there are those who are delighted with them and those who have had serious problems with them, not much in between. Seems they're much of a muchness, mostly they work fine but if you're unlucky they could be a real pain in the rear end.
It's a lot of money so I want to be sure I'm making the best decision possible. Any of you mog-expets out there got anything to add to what I've already read? I'm drawn towards the Smart Flap because of the night mode it has and I don't mind the thought of having to plug it in.
Other points to make are that Silvie has not used a cat flap before but does use a covered litter tray with a door in it. I have ordered a regular 4-way locking flap as back up! I know there's a click and/or beep which she'd have to get over - I hope she would with a bit of perseverence!

I got dexter a petporte, it malfunctioned really quickly, overnight! Customer support were very helpful and after trying a few reset options they sent another. The weather turned and i didnt fit the new one straight away, im glad i didnt as my brother helpfully kicked his football at it and made part fall off >:( after that im a bit apprehensive to plug the new in, iv also found the fact theres a flap there rather than a hole stopped the unwanted cat in question getting in so i could have just got a cheap £5 staywell replacement
In the short time the first petporte worked it was good, im assuming the second one will be great when im brave enough to fit it :innocent:

Thanks Millys Mum - from everything I've read it seems to be just your luck whether you get one that works or not!
For me I think I might need to wait a month or two to be sure I can justfy spending the money - and if and when I do get one, I will be sure to carefully retain all the customer service details!

i have had a pet port smart flap thingy for just over a year, our two younger cats use it fine but our older cats has only used it once to escape a big scary dog i may have brought into her house :shy: which is weird as she used to use the original cat flap fine
you can turn the beep off if the cats dont like it
ours has worked fine for just over a year and has started to malfunction
called the customer service line today and they were very helpfull, sugested what i might neeed to do to fix it and if that dosent work they will either repair mine or send me a new one free of charge which i though was nice

I bought a sureflap one tonight off ebay

The 2 year guarantee swung it for me.
Neither of my cats go out doors but Marley has a food allergy and is currently on a specialist diet to try and identify what he can and can't tolerate. The problem is he has taken quite a liking to Layla's kitten food and him keep pinching it is threatening to butter up the entire food trial.
The plan is to put Layla's food in a segregated room with the sure flap on the door so she can access it but the marlster can't.
Fingers crossed it works when it arrives!

Just to update.... the cat flap arrived and works like a dream. Was really easy to set up & install and Layla took to it straight away (amazing what food bribery can acheive!!!). It's hilarious watching the puzzlement on Marley's face as Layla floats through the flap only for it to close in his face as he attempts to follow her
Anyone out there thinking about getting a microchip cat flap I can't recommend the sureflap enough ;D

Mum's had the petporte for a while now with great success :)
Unfortunately the bullying Tom who terrorizes Blue has figured out that if he charges in straight after ted or blue he can get in the house  He cant get in whenever he likes though

Bumping, really. I think we're going to have to invest in one. The new cat on the block (I call him Sebastian as have no idea what his real name is) has taken to calling round for The Munchkin and helping himself to The Munchkin's dinner at the same time. The Munchkin is not impressed! I don't think Sebastian is homeless- just a bit of a chancer- but I don't want The Munchkin getting stressed out. I was thinking about the Sureflap- any other positive reviews?
